  • The objective of this study was to make growth and yield models for common ice plant (Mesembryanthemum crystallinum L.) using expolinear functional equations in a closed-type plant production system. Three-band radiation type fluorescent lamps with a 12-hours photoperiod were used, and the light intensity was $200{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$. Nutrient film systems with three layers were used for plant growth. Environmental conditions, such as air temperature, relative humidity and $CO_2$ concentration were controlled by an ON/OFF operation. Leaf area, shoot fresh and dry weights, light use efficiency of common ice plant as function of days after transplanting, accumulative temperature and accumulative radiation were analyzed. Leaf area, shoot fresh and dry weights per area were described using an expolinear equation. A linear relationship between shoot dry and fresh weights was observed. Light use efficiency of common ice plant was $3.3g{\cdot}MJ^{-1}$ at 30 days after transplanting. It is concluded that the expolinear growth model can be a useful tool for quantifying the growth and yield of common ice plant in a closed plant production system.

  • Cold stress is one of the most vulnerable environmental stresses that affect plant growth and crop yields. With the recent advancements in genetic approaches using Arabidopsis and other model systems, genes involved in cold-stress response have been identified and the key cold signaling factors have been characterized. Exposure to low-temperature stress triggers the activation of a set of genes known as cold regulatory (COR) genes. This activation process plays a crucial role in enhancing the resistance of plants to cold and freezing stress. The inducer of the C-repeatbinding factor (CBF) expression 1-CBF module (ICE1-CBF module) is a key cold signaling pathway regulator that enhances the expression of downstream COR genes; however, this signaling module in Panax ginseng remains elusive. Here, we identified cold-signaling-related genes, PgCBF1, PgCBF3, and PgICE1 and conducted functional genomic analysis with a heterologous system. We confirmed that the overexpression of cold- PgCBF3 in the cbf1/2/3 triple Arabidopsis mutant compensated for the cold stress-induced deficiency of COR15A and salt-stress tolerance. In addition, nuclearlocalized PgICE1 has evolutionarily conserved phosphorylation sites that are modulated by brassinsteroid insensitive 2 (PgBIN2) and sucrose non-fermenting 1 (SNF1)-related protein kinase 3 (PgSnRK3), with which it physically interacted in a yeast two-hybrid assay. Overall, our data reveal that the regulators identified in our study, PgICE1 and PgCBFs, are evolutionarily conserved in the P. ginseng genome and are functionally involved in cold and abiotic stress responses.

  • Ice-crystal clouds observation was conducted using a GIST/ADEMRC Multi-wavelength Raman lidar system in order to measure vertical profile and optical depth at Gwangju ($35^{\circ}$10'N, $126^{\circ}$53'E), Korea in December 2002, and March and April 2003. Ice-crystal clouds at high altitude can be distinguished from atmospheric aerosols by high depolarization ratio and high altitude. Ice-crystal clouds were observed at 5~12 km altitudes with a high depolarization ratio from 0.2 to 0.5. Optical depth of ice-crystal clouds had varied from 0.14 to 1.81. The radiative effect of observed ice-crystal cloud on climate system was estimated to be negative net flux in short wavelength (0.25~$4.0{\mu}m$) and positive net flux in short+long wavelength (0.25~$100{\mu}m$) at top of the atmosphere. Net flux by ice-crys tal cloud per unit optical depth was comparable to that of Asian dust.

  • An ice-making model has been developed and analyzed in this study. The effects of the following on the ice formation on the outer surface of a tube in which a refrigerant flows and boils are numerically investigated: thermal resistance of the refrigerant and thermal resistance of the ice formed on the outer surface of the tube. The ice thickness and related variables are analyzed in the case of the refrigerants R22 and R134a by using the expressions for phase-change heat transfer and boiling heat transfer coefficient. Vapor qualities of the refrigerants range from 0 to 0.8. As a result, up to the first 30 min, the internal convection resistance is higher than the thermal resistance of the ice on the external surface of the tube. However, after about 30 min, the thermal resistance of the ice increases remarkably due to the increase in the ice thickness. Thus, the heat flux to the refrigerant decreases, and further, the refrigerant quality and the boiling heat transfer coefficient also decrease. As the heat transfer coefficient of R22 is higher than that of R134a, the mass of the ice formed when R22 is used is higher than that formed when R134a is used.

  • PURPOSE : The effect of the vestibular caloric stimulation with ice water on the autonomic nervous system was investigated using pulse oximetry. METHOD : Thirty-four healthy men and women were subject to a 2-minute vestibular caloric stimulation with ice water, and autonomic nervous activities (low frequency, high frequency, and total power) were measured before and after the vestibular caloric stimulation. Data were analyzed separately for men and women. RESULT : Low frequency, high frequency, and total power in the men and low frequency in the women were statistically significantly higher after vestibular caloric stimulation. High frequency and total power in the women were higher but not significantly different after vestibular caloric stimulation. CONCLUSION : Vestibular caloric stimulation with ice water increases autonomic nervous activities, with the variation being within the normal range. The test can be considered safe for use.

  • The purpose of this paper describes the changes of TGV & ICE series' nose shape by increasing train speed and according to the periodical characteristics. As the speed increases, the length of the nose shape trends to lengthen longer. But the nose shape length does not increase as speed improves by optimized nose shape to reduce aerodynamic drag and micro-pressure wave in tunnels. TGV & ICE series' nose shape can be classified into Advanced paraboloid type, Shape-nosed type, Organic double-edged type and Flat-nosed type by the advance research(the changes of Shinkansen vehicle' nose shape) of high speed railway. Because it trends to be diversified and characterized more and more. This paper analyzed and introduced as TGV & ICE series' nose shape by top 2 nation (Germany, France) and high speed railway in the past years(1980-2007) for their railway design trends by new positioning(Advance research).

  • This paper presents experimental works on the ultrasonic influence during melting of ice and paraffin and compared the paraffin's result with ice's results. The experiments was carried out under two setting conditions.: 1) Heater without ultrasonic vibration, 2) heater with ultrasonic vibration. Experimental observations show that the ultrasonic vibration enhances significantly the phase-change process (melting) so that the melting time is reduced about 16∼25% compared to those of molting process without ultrasonics in the melting of both ice and paraffin. But the influence of ultrasonics was not significant to affect the reduction of the power consumption. In the case of paraffin, the reduction rate of power consumption was about 20%, but the reduction of the power consumption was increased about 0∼12%.

  • A comparative analysis was peformed on the operation cost at partial loads between ice storage systems with the two conventional control strategies, i.e., storage priority and chiller priority. The storage priority control is shown to be more economic for small cooling loads, while the chiller priority control is superior when the cooling load is as large as the design value. Based on this finding, a new control strategy is devised for an ice-storage system to minimize the operation cost at any cooling load. The new control strategy is found to be comparable to the chiller priority for large cooling loads, while it is more economic for small loads compared to the conventional control strategies. The practicality of the new control strategy is also confirmed through a performance test applying the new control strategy to an existing ice-storage system.
