The aerodynamic effects of leading-edge accretion can raise important safety concerns since the formulation of ice causes severe degradation in aerodynamic performance as compared with the clean airfoil. The objective of this study is to develop a numerical simulation strategy for predicting the particle trajectory around an MS-0317 airfoil in the test section of the NASA Glenn Icing Research Tunnel and to investigate the impingement characteristics of droplets on the airfoil surface. In particular, predictions of the mean velocity and turbulence diffusion using turbulent flow solver and Continuous Random Walk method were desired throughout this flow domain in order to investigate droplet dispersion. The collection efficiency distributions over the airfoil surface in simulations with different numbers of droplets, various integration time-steps and particle sizes were compared with experimental data. The large droplet impingement data indicated the trends in impingement characteristics with respect to particle size ; the maximum collection efficiency located at the upper surface near the leading edge, and the maximum value and total collection efficiency were increased as the particle size was increased. The extent of the area impinged on by particles also increased with the increment of the particle size, which is similar as compared with experimental data.

When a small absorbing particle is exposed to a strong thermal radiation incidence, it moves towards or away from the radiation source due to the nonuniform internal absorption of the radiation. It is called the photophoretic phenomena and governed by the asymmetry factor. An asymmetry factor for the total wavelength range is calculated to estimate the photophoretic phenomena of a particle in a combustor or in the atmosphere and compared to that for a single wavelength. The samples are soot particulates, water droplets, ice particles, silicon particles, $SiO_2$ particles, aluminium oxide particles, whose spectral complex refractive index are available. Although differences between total and monochromatic asymmertry factors are not much for relatively uniform distribution of the spectral refractive index, they are great in general. Therefore the use of the monochromatic factor will considerably deteriorate the accuracy of the calculation of the photophoresis.

This study experimented to understand the effects of transporting ice slurry through elbow and inclined tube. And at this experiment it used propylene glycol-water solution and a diameter of about 2mm ice particle. The experiments were carried out under various conditions, with velocity of water solution at the entry ranging from 1.0 to 3.5 w/s and elbows and inclined tubes of 4 kinds angle with $30^{\circ},\;45^{\circ},\;90^{\circ}\;and\;180^{\circ}$. The pressure drop between the tube entry and exit were measured. According to angle of bending, the highest pressure drop was measured at $30^{\circ}$ elbow and the lowest pressure drop was measured at $90^{\circ}$ elbow, and there are only a little differences of pressure drop between $45^{\circ}$ elbow and $180^{\circ}$ elbow. According to angle of inclined tube, the highest pressure drop was measured at $90^{\circ}$ inclined tube and the pressure drop at $45^{\circ},\;30^{\circ},\;180^{\circ}$ inclined tubes were lower successively. The lowest pressure drop in elbows and inclined tubes was measured at velocity of $2.0\~2.5$ m/s and concentration of $10\;wt\%$.
Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) are enormous eruptions of plasma ejected from the Sun into interplanetary space, and mainly responsible for geomagnetic storms and solar energetic particle events. It is very important to infer their direction of propagation, speed and their 3-dimensional configurations in terms of space weather forecast. Two STEREO satellites provide us with 3-dimensional stereoscopic measurements. Using the STEREO observations, we can determine the 3-dimensional structure and radial velocity of the CME. In this study, we applied three different methods to the 2008 April 26 event: (1) Ice cream Cone Model by Xue (2005) using the SOHO/LASCO data, (2) Flux rope model by Thernisien (2009) using the STEREO/SECCHI data, (3) Flux rope model with zero angle using the STEREO/SECCHI data. The last method in which separation angle of flux rope is zero, is similar to the ice cream cone model morphologically. The comparison shows that the radial speeds from three methods are estimated to be about 750km/s and are within ${\pm}120km/s$. We will extend this comparison to other CMEs observed by STEREO and SOHO/LASCO.
In order to analyze ground relaxation and cavity formation mechanism due to deteriorated sewer pipe, field test was carried out and a numerical assessments were compared with the field test results. An artificial underground cavity was intended using the ice block overlaying the buried pipe and confirmed that the cavity and relaxation of the surrounding ground were gradually formed as the ice block starts to melt down. Such mechanism was highly suspected to be involved with soil particle interlocking as a soil compaction was a typical process for the buried pipes. In exploring such mechanism numerically, commercially available DEM (Discrete Element Method) code PFC2D was used and the interlocking induced cavern behaviors were successfully simulated and compared with field test results by utilizing the clump logic imbedded in PFC code.

As air pollution has become an important issue across the world, studies of clean fuel are on going to reduce combustion emissions. One example is development of the LPLi(Liquefied Phase LPG injection) engine. Some problems are occurred during development. One of the problems is icing phenomenon at injector tip due to evaporation potential heat when liquid LPG is injected. If the Icing is raised at injector tip or injector inserting hole, it disturbs fuel injection. And if the ice particles are inducted into cylinder, it brings problems associated with control of emission and air/fuel ratio. In order to solve the problems, a rig system was set up and observed Icing of injector tip. Engine test was carried out for visualization of injector tip icing and its effects on combustion and emissions.
Gas hydrate is an inclusion compound consisting of water and low molecular weight gases, which are incorporated into the lattice structure of water. Owing to its promising aspect to application technologies, gas hydrate has been widely studied recently, especially $CO_2$ hydrate for the CCS (Carbon Capture and Storage) issue. The key point of $CO_2$ hydrate technology for the CCS is how to produce gas hydrate in an efficient and economic way. In this study, we have tried to study the characteristic of gas hydrate formation using micro-sized ice through an ultrasonic nozzle which generate 2.4 MHz frequency wave. $CO_2$ as a carrier gas brings micro-sized mist into low-temperature reactor, where the mist and carrier gas forms $CO_2$ hydrate under $-55^{\circ}C$ and atmospheric pressure condition and some part of the mist also remains unreacted micro-sized ice. Formed gas hydrate was average 10.7 of diameter at average. The starting ice particle was set to constant pressure to form $CO_2$ hydrate and the consumed amount of $CO_2$ gas was simultaneously measured to calculate the conversion of ice into gas hydrate. Results showed that the gas hydrate formation was highly suitable because of its extremely high gas-solid contact area, and the formation rate was also very high. Self-preservation effect of $CO_2$ hydrate was confirmed by the measurement of $CO_2$ hydrate powder at normal and at pressed state, which resulted that this kind of gas storage and transport could be feasible using $CO_2$ hydrate formation.
The outside environment is very severe while aircraft is cruising. Especially small
particle of icing in cold air condition can have negative influence on aircraft
performance. If ice particle is attached to leading edge of wing, it can change wing
configuration and decrease flight quality. If icing particle is attached to inlet of engine,
it can damage compressor blade and have negative influence to aircraft safety. We
make icing simulation device with liquid air system for analyzing about variation of
engine performance due to incoming of icing to engine.
We report a facile method for preparing KIT-1 mesoporous silicates with two different macroporous structures by dual templating. As a template for macropores, polystyrene (PS) beads are assembled into uniform three dimensional arrays by ice templating, i.e., by growing ice crystals during the freezing process of the particle suspension. Then, the polymeric templates are directly introduced into the precursor-gel solution with cationic surfactants for templating the mesopores, which is followed by hydrothermal crystallization and calcination. Later, by burning out the PS beads and the surfactants, KIT-1 mesoporous silicates with macropores are produced in a powder form. The macroporous structures of the silicates can be controlled by changing the amount of EDTANa4 salt under the same templating conditions using the PS beads and inverse-opal or hollow structures can be obtained. This strategy to prepare mesoporous powders with controllable macrostructures is potentially useful for various applications especially those dealing with bulky molecules such as, catalysis, separation, drug carriers and environmental adsorbents.

Mineral dust in the polar snow plays an important role both in the climate system of the Earth and in global biogeochemical cycles. Analysis of the concentration and the particle size distribution of mineral dust has been carried out in the snow from the Antarctic surface snow and the Greenland snowpit. Among the various particle size determination techniques, a Multisizer 3 Coulter Counter in a class 100 clean bench counted all particles between 1.1 and $30.0{\mu}m$ with a $50{\mu}m$ aperture tube. The aperture tube size, the concentration of electrolytes and the accuracy of the particle size distribution were determined in this study. The number concentrations from the Antarctic surface snow were 81,843 particles $mL^{-1}$, but those from the Greenland snowpit were 10,666 particles $mL^{-1}$. In the volume distribution, the distributions of mineral dust in both the Antarctic surface snow and the Greenland snowpit showed lognormal distribution in the size interval 1.1 to $6.0{\mu}m$ with the mode, 3.562 and $3.836{\mu}m$, respectively. The analysis technique using a coulter counter for mineral dust could be used for reconstructing paleoclimates from polar ice cores.
