Synthesis, End-Functionalization and Characterization of Hyperbranched Polysiloxysilanes from $AB_3$ Type Monomer

  • Hyperbranched polysiloxysilanes (HBPSs), with a variety of terminal functional groups (vinyl, epoxy, carboxyl and hydroxyl), were synthesized by the self-polymerization of an $AB_3$ type monomer of tris(dimethylvinylsiloxy) silane, with subsequent end-functionalizations, such as epoxidation and radical addition reaction, respectively. The ratio of the $\alpha-and$ $\beta-addition$ linkages in the HBPS polymerized by hydrosilylation of the $AB_3$ monomer was found to be approximately 1 to 3. The thermal stability and solubility were affected by the terminal functional groups.

Precise Synthesis of Dendron-Like Hyperbranched Polymers and Block Copolymers by an Iterative Approach Involving Living Anionic Polymerization, Coupling Reaction, and Transformation Reaction

  • Dendritic hyperbranched poly(methyl methacrylate)s (PMMA)s, whose branched architectures resemble the 'dendron' part(s) of dendrimer, were synthesized by an iterative methodology consisting of two reactions in each iteration process: (a) a coupling reaction of u-functionalized, living, anionic PMMA having two tert-butyldimethylsilyloxymethylphenyl(SMP) groups with benzyl bromide(BnBr)-chain-end-functionalized PMMA, and (b) a transformation reaction of the introduced SMP groups into BnBr functionalities. These two reactions, (a) and (b), were repeated three times to afford a series of dendron-like, hyperbranched (PMMA)s up to third generation. Three dendron-like, hyperbranched (PMMA)s different in branched architecture were also synthesized by the same iterative methodology using a low molecular weight, functionalized 1,1-diphenylalkyl anion prepared from sec-BuLi and 1,1-bis(3-tert-butyldime-thylsilyloxymethylphenyl)ethylene in the reaction step (b) in each iterative process. Furthermore, structurally similar, dendron-like, hyperbranched block copolymers could be successfully synthesized by the iterative methodology using $\alpha$-functionalized, living, anionic poly(2-(perfluorobutyl) ethyl methacrylate) (PRfMA) in addition to $\alpha$-functionalized, living PMMA. Accordingly, the resulting block copolymers were comprised of both PMMA and PRfMA segments with different sequential orders. After the block copolymers were cast into films and annealed, their surface structures were characterized by angle-dependent XPS and contact angle measurements. All three samples showed significant segregation and enrichment of PRfMA segments at the surfaces.

  • We succeeded the synthesis of new functional polymers by novel ring-opening addition reactions of bis(oxetane)s with diacyl chlorides, di(active ester)s, and di(carboxylic acid)s using quaternary onium salts as catalysts at appropriate conditions. Hyperbranched polyesters with many pendant hydroxy groups were also synthesized by the polyaddition of bis(oxetane)s with tricarboxylic acid, or by the self-polyadditions of $AB_2\;or\;A_2B$ type monomers containing oxetane group. The anionic ring-opening polymerization of (3-ethyl-3-hydroxymethyl)oxetane was examined using sodium tert-buthoxide to give hyperbranched poly(ether)s containing one oxetanyl group and many hydroxyl groups in the end of polymer chain.

하이퍼브랜치 PPV를 이용한 유기 EL 소자의 제작 (Organic Electroluminescence using Hyperbranched Poly(Phenylene Vinylene))

  • Hyperbranched conjugated polymers (p-HPPV and m-HPPV) with para and meta linkages were synthesized from $A_2$ and $B_4$ type monomers through Wittig polycondensation. The synthesized p-HPPV and m-HPPV were completely soluble in common organic solvents such as chloroform, tetrahydrofuran, 1,2-dichloroethane, etc. and thermal gravimetric analyses showed that p-HPPV and m-HPPV are stable up to $350^{\circ}C$. The molecular weights (from GPC), UV-visible, and photoluminescence maximum peaks of p-HPPV and m-HPPV are characterized in detail. The fabricated EL devices using the synthesized hyperbranched polymers, (ITO/(p-HPPV or m-HPPV)/Al), showed EL emission at about 507 nm and 481 nm (681 nm), respectively. Especially, EL device from m-HPPV were found to exhibit nearly white emission with approximate CIE coordinates of (0.31, 0.34) compared with (0.310, 0.316) of NTSC white color at $100\;cd/m^2$. The good photophysical properties combine with good film-form ability could make these hyperbranched polymers to be a potential candidate for the EL materials.

2차 비선형 광학 초분지형 폴리에스테르의 합성 및 특성 (Synthesis and Properties of Hyperbranched Polyester with Second-Order Outical Nonlinearity)

  • 새로운 개념의 초분지형 비선형 광학 고분자 (PE-Azo/Hyper)를 AB$_2$형의 기능기를 가지는 단량체 4-[N,N-bis(hydroxyethyl)amino-4'-formyl]azobenzene (CHO-DOH)으로부터 Knoevenagel 축중합 반응을 통하여 합성하였다. 겔크로마토그래피상에서 폴리스티렌을 기준시료로 측정된 중합체의 무게평균분자량은 M$_{w}$ =61,800 (M$_{W}$ /M$_{n}$=1.86)이었고 중합체의 용해도를 조사한 결과 1-methyl-2-pyrrolidinone, N,N-dimethylformamide 등의 반양자성극성 유기용매에 잘 녹았으며 따라서 이들 용매를 이용하여 양질의 박막성형이 가능하였다. 또한 열시차 분석법으로 중합체 PE-Azo/Hvper의 열적 성질을 조사한 결과 녹는점이 관찰되지 않아 무정형으로 판명되었으며 유리 전이 온도는 $121^{\circ}C$로 나타났다. 폴링에 의하여 극성 배향된 중합체 박막의 2차 비선형 계수를 Nd : YAG 레이저 (1064 nm)를 이용하여 Maker fringe 방법으로 측정한 결과 $d_{33}$= 25.4 pm/V로 비교적 높은 값을 나타내어 초분지형 고분자에서도 극성배향이 이루어져 비선형성이 발현됨을 관찰할 수 있었다.

Synthesis and Characterization of Low Viscosity Aromatic Hyperbranched Polyester Epoxy Resin

  • Low viscosity aromatic hyperbranched polyester epoxy resin (HTBE) was synthesized by the reaction between epichlorohydrin (ECH) and carboxyl-end hyperbranched polyester (HTB) which was prepared from inexpensive materials $A_2$ (1,4-butanediol glycol, BEG) and $B_3$ (trimellitic anhydride, TMA) by pseudo one-step method. The molar mass of the HTB was calculated from its acid value by "Recursive Probability Approach". The degree of branching (DB) of the HTB was characterized by model compounds and $^1H$ NMR-minus spectrum technology, and the DB of the HTB was about $0.47{\sim}0.63$. The viscosity and epoxy equivalent weight of the HTBE were $3,600{\sim}5,000\;cp$ and lower than 540 g/mol respectively. The reaction mechanism and structure of the $AB_2$ monomer, HTB and HTBE were investigated by MS, $^1H$ NMR and FTIR spectra technology. The molecular size of HTBE is under 8.65 nm and its shape is ellipsoid-like as determined by molecular simulation.

Structural and Molar Mass Characterization of Commercial Aliphatic Hyperbranched Polyesters

  • We investigated the effects of annealing on the rearrangement of H-bonding structure and its influence on the thermal and rheological properties of $2^{nd}\;and\;4^{th}$ pseudo-generation aliphatic hyperbranched (HB) polyesters based on 2,2-bis(methylol)propionic acid. During annealing of amorphous HB polyesters, the structure becomes more ordered as a consequence of multiple H-bonds formation between linear sequences. Structure ordering is more pronounced for the lower pseudo-generation HB polyester with low molar mass, low degree of branching and incompletely reacted core hydroxyl groups which greatly increases the possibility for multiple H-bond interactions.
