A Temperature-Compensated Hygrometer Using Resistive Humidity Sensors (전기 저항식 습도 센서를 이용한 온도 보상된 습도계 설계)

  • A temperature-compensated hygrometer has been developed using resistive humidity sensors. It consist of a sine wave generator, logarithm converters, rectifiers, and amplifiers. The hygrometer accomplishes the linearization and temperature compensation of sensor characteristics. The theory of operation is presented and experimental results are used to verify theoretical predictions. The experimental results show that the conversion sensitivity of the hygrometer is about 24.8 mV/%RH and the linearity error of the conversion characteristic is less than 17.2 % over a relative humidity range from 30 to 80 %RH. The results also show that the temperature coefficient of the output voltage is less than $10149ppm/^{\circ}C$ over a temperature range from 22 to $40^{\circ}C$.

  • Calibrations of fast-response krypton hygrometers were carried out using a dew-point hygrometer to investigate the changes in their absorption coefficients due to long-term field operation. Absorption coefficients changed proportionally with the number of hours of field operation. The increase in absorption coefficient indicates that the water vapor flux, calculated with the original absorption coefficient, would underestimate the true flux in the field. To minimize the uncertainty in quantifying evapotranspiration and surface energy budget studies, frequent calibrations (for example, every 1500 hours of field operation) of krypton hygrometer are recommended.

On the Effect of Tube Attenuation on Measuring Water Vapor Flux Using a Closed-path Hygrometer (폐회로 습도계를 이용한 수증기 플럭스 관측시관의 감쇠 효과에 관하여)

  • Eddy covariance method is widely used in measuring vertical fluxes of mass and energy between the atmosphere and the biosphere. In this method, scalar concentration is measured with either open-path or closed-path sensors. For the latter, fluctuations of scalar concentration are attenuated as the sample travels through a long tube, resulting in flux loss. To quantify this tube attenuation, water vapor concentrations measured with both closed-path and open-path sensors were analyzed. Our statistical analysis showed that the power spectral density obtained from the closed-path sensor was different from that from the open-path sensor in the frequency range of > 0.5 Hz. The loss of water vapor flux due to tube attenuation was < 5% during midday. At nighttime, however, the flux loss increased significantly because of the low wind speeds and the weak turbulence sources. Theoretical calculation for the tube attenuation showed a small bias in high frequency range probably because of the interaction of sticky water vapor with a tube wall.

  • This experiment was carried out to develop long-term preservable meat products by controlling a water activity which has a potential inhibitory effects on the growth of microorganism and germination of spore. For this purpose the accuracy of instrument for the measurement of water activity, electric hygrometer was used for this study as well as water activity of final products were investigated according to the various amounts of different kinds of additives. Spore of Bacillus spp, Clostridium sporogenes and Cl. botulinum were inoculated to the meat products with different aw and their growth states in $25^{\circ}C$ were observed to find out the lowest aw which inhibit their growth (aw 0.950).

Levels and Patterns of Main Terms' Interrelationships in Student Teachers' Notable Questions about the Contents of the Elementary Science Textbooks (초등 과학교과서 내용에 대한 예비교사들의 주요 질문에 나타나는 용어의 상호 관련성 수준과 유형)

  • This study analysed student teachers' notable questions about the earth science contents in the elementary science textbooks. The contents of notable questions were defined as ‘notable question contents 1' and 'notable question contents 2'. Both the question contorts are contents about which the number of questions is above three times and from two times to three times as much as the mean number of questions per page of each unit respectively. The results are as follows. First, question contents 1 are found as 'clouds observation', 'geological strata formation' and so on. Question contents 2, 'rainfall measurement', 'moon's movement during one night' and so on are found. Second, the number of interrelationships of main terms in questions increased in each question of question contents 1, but 4 term-patterns are found more in question contents 2 than question contents 1. Third, high interrelationship patterns of terms in question contents 1 are 'coal and petroleum-generation', 'metamorphosis-heat and pressure', 'metamorphosis-heat and pressure-metamorphic rocks', 'planet-sun-comet-revolution' and in question contents 2. 'constellation plate-use', 'dryness and wetness hygrometer-principle', 'seismograph-principle-earthquake', 'earth rotation axis-tilting-occurrence', 'dryness and wetness hygrometer-principle-humidity' and so on. The sources of questions analysed in this study are estimated as the content construction system of textbooks, or students' general questions about the earth science contents. If this is the former, the problems in texts and illustrations in textbooks should be articulated and resolved. And if the latter, the elementary science curriculum has to be reconsidered in view of scientific literacy in earth science.

EMC/ERH of Rough Rice and Brown Rice (벼 및 현미의 평형함수율/평형상대습도)

  • Adsorption and desorption experiments were carried out on rough rice and brown rice (Nampyung) at 5, 15, 25, 35, $45^{\circ}C$ for moisture contents between 8.7 and $25\%$ (db). The method employed was to measure the equilibrium relative humidity (ERH) of air in contact with the grain under static conditions, using an electronic hygrometer The effects of temperature and moisture contents were investigated, and the measured values were fitted to the modified Henderson, the modified Chung-Pfost, the modified Halsey and the modified Oswin model. The ERHs of rough rice and brown rice decreased with an decrease in moisture content and temperature, and the effects of temperature was no significant at moisture content of $25\%$ (db). Equilibrium moisture content (EMC) of brown rice was higher than rough rice at same temperature and relative humidity. Desorption EMC is higher than the adsorption, but there is no significant difference between desorption and adsorption EMC in moisture content near $25\%$ (db) at rough rice and near 9, 21 and $25\%$ (db) at brown rice. The modified Oswin model was the best in describing the adsorption EMC and the modified Chung-Pfost model was the best in describing the adsorption ERH of rough rice. The modified Oswin model was the best in describing the adsorption EMC/ERH of brown rice. The modified Chung-Pfost model was the best in describing the desorption EMC/ERH of rough rice and brown rice.

  • This study is to observe the change of temperature and relative humidity for various vegetables in vacuum precooling system. The materials for experiments were the lettuce, chinese cabbage, pak choi and cabbage. The experimental apparatus was constructed of vacuum chamber, vapor/water separator, water tank, pumps ejecting and cooling water circulation, refrigerator unit, cooling coil for water cooling, Hygrometer and Data logger measuring of the temperature change. The experiments were operated in 20torr and recorded every 3 minutes. It was found that the cooling temperature and speed of vegetables are depending on the percentage of its water content. The more water contains, the faster cooling speed and the lower cooling temperature.

  • 반도체 집적회로 공정에서 사용되는 폴리이미드 포토레지스트(P12723, Dupont)를 감습막으로 사용하는 마이크로 습도센서 소자를 제작하였다. 마이크로 습도센서는 실리콘 웨이퍼 기판 위에 $SiO_2$ 박막을 건식열산화 공정으로 제작하고, Al 박막을 포토리소그라피 공정으로 패터닝 한 IDT (Interdigital Transducer)를 전극 위에 폴리이미드 포토레지스트를 공정변수를 다양하게 조절하면서 감습막으로 제작하였다. 폴리이미드 감습막은 스핀코팅법으로 제작하였으며, 회전수를 조절하여 두께를 변화시켰다. 완성된 마이크로 습도센서 소자의 상대습도 변화$(10{\sim}90% RH)$에 따른 정전용량 값 변화를 항온항습조 내에서 다양한 온도에서 HP4192A Impedance Analyzer를 사용하여 조사함으로써, 폴리이미드 포토레지스트를 사용하는 마이크로 정전용량형 습도센서의 제작 가능성을 검토하였다. 폴리이미드 정전용량형 마이크로 습도센서는 다양한 인가 전원 주파수에서 기준 센서로 사용된 상용 Vaisala Hygrometer와 유사한 감습특성 및 응답특성을 보였다.

A novel triaxial testing device for unsaturated soils with measurement of suction and volumetric strains

  • Standard triaxial cells are commonly used to measure the mechanical behavior of saturated soils. However, this type of standard system is difficult to use for unsaturated soil specimens since it cannot measure the changes in the pore-air volume and pressure. This paper proposes to extend the measurement possibilities of the standard triaxial testing device in a simple way and to adapt it to partially saturated soils. The system is supplied by two hygrometers installed at each end of the cylindrical unsaturated specimen to measure local relative humidity, which allows the derivation of suction. The volumetric strain of the specimen is calculated by analyzing digital photos captured from the outside of the transparent cell wall. Specimens made of kaolin clay, having different hydraulic properties, were tested to verify the reliability of the measurements, and thus, the relevance of the proposed techniques to study the mechanical behavior of unsaturated soils.
