Alpha alumina powder with fine particle size and narrow particle size distribution was prepared by precipitation method using Al2(SO4)3.18H2O as a starting material. The alpha alumina powder was prepared by calcining aluminum hydroxide which was formed under various pH values. The sinterabilityof alpha alumina powder and the effect of MgO on the sinterability of alpha alumina powder were investigated. The sinterability of alpha alumina powder was the order of pH=10≒pH11>pH=7≒pH9, and alpha alumina obtained from boehmite which was prepared by precipitation method reached to 97.5% of theoretcal density by the pressureless sintering. The effect of MgO on volume shrinkage of alumina was very slight in the initial sintering stage but remarkable in the final sintering stage. It was also found that MgO controlled effectively the grain growth of alumina.
High purity alumina and amorphous silica were prepared from Ha-dong kaolin by means of appliance of sulfuric acid. The effect of sulfuric acid concentration, reaction temperature and reaction time on the formation of aluminum sulfate was investigated. The precipitation conditions ofaluminum sulfate from the sulfuric acid solution with ethanol and ammonium hydroxide were deteremined. In the optimum condition, the conversion of aluminum oxide in kaolin to aluminum oxide powder was 85.0 percent. Alumina powder was prepared by calcination of the precipitates, and its purity was 99.0 percent.
We investigate the effects of redox reaction on preparation of high purity ${\alpha}$-alumina from selectively ground aluminum dross. Preparation procedure of the ${\alpha}$-alumina from the aluminum dross has four steps: i) selective crushing and grinding, ii) leaching process, iii) redox reaction, and iv) precipitation reaction under controlled pH. Aluminum dross supplied from a smelter was ground to separate metallic aluminum. After the separation, the recovered particles were treated with hydrochloric acid(HCl) to leach aluminum as aluminum chloride solution. Then, the aluminum chloride solution was applied to a redox reaction with hydrogen peroxide($H_2O_2$). The pH value of the solution was controlled by addition of ammonia to obtain aluminum hydroxide and to remove other impurities. Then, the obtained aluminum hydroxide was dried at $60^{\circ}C$ and heat-treated at $1300^{\circ}C$ to form ${\alpha}$-alumina. Aluminum dross was found to contain a complex mixture of aluminum metal, aluminum oxide, aluminum nitride, and spinel compounds. Regardless of introduction of the redox reaction, both of the sintered products are composed mainly of ${\alpha}$-alumina. There were fewer impurities in the solution subject to the redox reaction than there were in the solution that was not subject to the redox reaction. The impurities were precipitated by pH control with ammonia solution, and then removed. We can obtain aluminum hydroxide with high purity through control of pH after the redox reaction. Thus, pH control brings a synthesis of ${\alpha}$-alumina with fewer impurities after the redox reaction. Consequently, high purity ${\alpha}$-alumina from aluminum dross can be fabricated through the process by redox reaction.
This study was designed to observe the marginal leakage of three permanent cements affected by three temporary cements. The temporary cements used in this study were Zinc oxide-eugenol, Non-eugenol, and Calcium hydroxide cements and the permanent cements were Zinc phosphate, Polycarboxylate and Alumina reinforced EBA cements. To measure the dye penetration into permanently cemented zone, the experimental specimens were treated with the temporary cements for a week. An analysis of the data obtained from 120 specimens resulted in the following conclusions: 1. Regardless of the types of the permanent cements used, using Calcium hydroxide cement as temporary cement showed higher marginal leakage than other temporary cements. 2. Using Polycarboxylate cement as permanent cement showed less marginal leakage than other permanent cements. 3. The marginal leakage in zinc phosphate cement was similar to Alumina reinforced EBA cement regardless of the types of the temporary cements.
As a part of study to establish the industrial process for manufacturing high purity alumina powder which is largely used as fine ceramics, an adsorption method using a silica-containing material which can absorb to eliminate a major impurity, Na in aluminum hydroxide as a raw material has been studied. It is confirmed that the primary property of powder such as the particle size of raw material and that of silica-containing material plays a great important role in the purification process.
Nanocrystalline transient aluminas (${\gamma}$-alumina) were coated on core particles (${\gamma}$-alumina) by a carbonate precipitation and thermal-assisted combustion, which is environmentally friend. The ammonium aluminum carbonate hydroxide (AACH) as a precursor for coating of transient aluminas was produced from precipitation reaction of ammonium aluminum sulfate and ammonium hydrogen carbonate. The crystalline size and morphology of the synthetic, AACH, were greatly dependent on pH and temperature. AACH with a size of 5 nm was coated on the core alumina particle at pH 9. whereas rod shape and large agglomerates were coated at pH 8 and 11, respectively. The AACH was tightly bonded coated on the core particle due to formation of surface complexes by the adsorption of carbonates, hydroxyl and ammonia groups on the surface of the core alumina powder. The synthetic precursor successfully converted to amorphous- and ${\gamma}$-alumina phase at low temperature through decomposition of surface complexes and thermal-assisted phase transformation.
Powder synthesis using the alkoxy precursor technique exhibits processing flexibility not available in traditional high temperature solid-state reaction. With proper process control, impurities can be reduced to very low levels. The major distinction of the present work lies in the method of accomplishing the hydrolysis reaction. In the present case, water is not added to the system. Instead the metal alkoxide/alcohol solution is heated to a temperature at which water is formed through dehydration of the alcohol solvent, causing precipitation of the corresponding metal oxide (hydroxide). The present method provides a means of producing amorphous alumina.
A mixture of aluminum isopropoxide (Al(OC3H7i)3) solution and sodium hydroxide (NaOH) solution was hydrolyzed in the range between pH 1~14. the powder obtained from sol-gel process was calcined at several temperatures and crystallization behaviors of various samples were investigated. The hydrolyzed sols of pH 1~6 wre clear, or near clear. On the other hand, powder precipitated from sols of pH 7~14. The sample obtained from pH 3 solution crystallized via complicated route, and $\beta$-Al2O3 and $\beta$"-Al2O3 phases appeared at lower temperature than samples from other pH conditions. And the quantity of remained $\beta$"-Al2O3 phase after heat treatment at 150$0^{\circ}C$ was more than samples from other pH conditions. After sintering, ionic conductivities were 1.3$\times$10-4S.cm-1 to 0.76$\times$10-4S.cm-1.0-4S.cm-1.
