Objectives : The purpose of this study is to consider the definition, history, classification and clinical effect of balneotherapy. Methods : We researched oriental documents and recent sources of balneotherapy. Results and Conclusions : 1. Balneotherapy is medical cure method which uses physical chemistry effects of water. 2. Records of balneotherapy are seen in oriental documents such as Hwangjenaegyeong(黃帝內經), Sinnongbonchogyeong(神農本草經), Jaebyoungwonhuron(諸病源候論), Youmoonsachin(儒門事親), Bonchogangmok(本草綱目) and Donguibogam(東醫寶鑑) etc. 3. Spa can classify eleven types according to ingredient. The types were as following. Simple thermal spirng, Common salt spring, Sodium bicarbonated spring, Sulfate spring, Radioactive spring, Acid spring, Sulfur spring, Carbon dioxide spring, Iron spring, Alum spring & Sulfate-iron spring, Bicarbonatealkaline spring. 4. Physical, chemical and environmental effect of spa therapy have effectiveness on the chronic and we akness disease more than acute disease. And balneotherapy have more effectiveness on digestive disease, pulmonary disease, metabolic disease, circulatory disease, muscle skeletal disease and dermatologic disease than any other diseases.
The Halliwick method was developed by Mr. James McMillan, a Canadian engineer of fluid mechanics. In 1949 he started to teach physically handicapped girls to swim at the "Halliwick school for crippled Girls" in London. The Halliwick method has four important basic units, as is shown in Fig 1. This constribution only deals with the structures or the practical part of the method. This part is also known as the 10-point programme. Before the characteristics of the 10 points are dealt with seperately, a few general remarks about these ponits have to be discussed. Of all things happening in the water, fun is the most important one. Swimming is fun! Swimming is taught in an order McMillan describes as: mental Adjustment(M.A), balance restoratiion(B.R.), inhibition(Inh.), and facilitation(Fac.). The 10 points of structure are linked to each other as well as to the learning process as is shown in Fig 3. The Halliwick method, which was devised by James McMillan, has proved to be a very successful way of establishing the basic principles as they have described in this article.
Objectives: This study was to investigate the reductive effects of oriental medicine on the body fat and abdominal obesity, Methods: The subject were selected among the patients who were treated with 4weeks total program, visited our obesity clinic from October 1999 to August 2000, We practiced combined therapy such as herbal medicine, acupuncture therapy, moxibution therapy, negative therapy, auricular acupuncture, electrolipolysis, colon hydrotherapy, heat therapy, Chuna therapy, low-calorie diet teaching, exercise teaching, and correcting life style for 4 weeks. Results and Conclusion: 1. Body weight, RBW, and BMI were significantly reduced each by 5.4kg, 10.4% and $2.2kg/m^2$ (p<0.01). 2. % Body fat was significantly reduced by 3.3%. Fat mass was reduced by 4.0kg(17.0%) and soft lean mass was reduced by 1.5kg(3.7%), thus it was acknowledged that fat mass was significantly reduced compared to soft lean mass by oriental medicine treatment for obesity. 3. WHR was significantly reduced by 0.02. Waist circumference was reduced by 6cm(6.6%) and hip circumference was reduced by 4.5cm(4.6%), thus it was acknowledged that waist fat was significantly reduced compared to hip circumference by oriental medicine treatment for obesity.
Purpose: Frostbite can affect still soldiers. Initial clinical manifestations are similar for superficial and deep frostbite, so early treatment is identical. It is under-estimated by physicians. We try to identify the challenges of managing these complex tissue injuries. Methods: A retrospective analysis of 84 patients hospitalized at AFCH from 2009 to 2015 was conducted. We investigated differences of epidemiological characteristics, identification of soft tissue injury, treatment and complications between superficial (SF: 43; 51.2%) and deep (DF: 41; 48.8%) frostbite. Results: The major (94.0%) developed frostbite in dry circumstances (89.3%). Wet circumstances (66.7%) were more susceptible to DF rather than dry (46.7%). The 38 (45.2%) arrived to specialist within 7days. Most prone sites were feet, followed by hands. Toes had more deep injuries. DF presented more increased levels of ALT, CPK, CKMB, CRP. The bone scan of W+S+ was 48.3%, 87.1% and W+S- was 20.7%, 12.9%, respectively. The treatment resulted in improved or normalized perfusion scan with matching clinical improvement. It was a good tool to assess treatment response. Eighteen normal and 8 stenotic type of PCR resulted in normal with matching clinical improvement. One continuous obstructive waveform led to minor amputation. Twelve underwent both PCR and MRA. Among 6 normal PCR, 5 showed normal and one stenosis in MRA. All 5 stenosis and one obstruction showed the same findings in MRA. It was a good tool to evaluate vascular compromise. They were treated with rapid rewarming (11.6%, 22.0%), hydrotherapy (16.3%, 29.3%), respectively. Six (14.6%) underwent STSG, 2 (4.9%) had digital amputation in DF. Berasil, Ibuprofen, Trental were commonly administered. PGE1 was administered selectively for 6.8, 10.8 days, respectively. Raynaud's syndrome (16.3%), CRPS (4.7%), LOM (14.6%) and toe deformity (4.9%) were specific sequelae. Conclusion: We should recommend intensive foot care education, early rewarming and evacuation to specialized units. The bone scanning and PCR should allow for a more aggressive and active approach to the management of tissue viability.

Today, SPA fills many of the same needs as they did thousands of years ago, including relaxation, wellness and stress relief by incorporating many of the same methods embraced by the ancients such as a multitude of hydrotherapy treatments, thalassotherapy and massage therapy, one of the most widely used SPA treatments. The definition is as follows: SPA is entities devoted to enhancing overall well-being through a variety of professional services that encourage the renewal of mind, body and spirit. It was from here that the concept of modernday SPA evolved, incorporating full health and beauty services along with sport, aquatic and rest facilities. Todays SPA, a absolute concept, is being specialized and spread as fast as undefinable just in a word. Thalassotherapy, a kind of SPA therapy, contains minerals and trace elements. Born more than 4,000 years ago in ancient Egypt, thalassotherapy comes from the Greek words for thalasso(sea water) and therapeia(to heal). Thalassa was the Greek personification of the Mediterranean Sea that surrounded them and gave them so much of their sustenance. It helps to nourish, hydrate and refine skin texture and also eliminate metabolic waste and toxins in the body. Thalassotherapy is recommended for post-natal and postsurgery recovery period, chronic fatigue, circulatory problems, cellulite control and dermatological problems. It's also possible to enjoy the thalassotherapy SPA as a day guest. Be sure to try the jansu massage, given in the heated sea water pool. As a trained therapist gently whisks clients through the womb-warm water, clients can practically feel the toxins leave their body. Many women from all over the world have been kept up beautiful skin with applying thalassotherapy to their faces and bodies since long times and these days in France, they are getting great curative clinical effects from renovative and scientific technological combination. Thus thalassotherapy will be absolutely ultimate form of natural healing which can keep and recover human's health and beauty.

The present study investigated the actual conditions of physical therapy rooms at long-term hospitals in Korea and conducted a comparative analysis to develop an efficient floor plan and facility improvement measures. 1. At hospitals surveyed, physical therapy services were used at a high frequency but they did not have enough space for rehab treatment and long paths of patient flow were found to make patient management inconvenient. Therefore, physical therapy units should be conveniently located both in terms of distance and direction so as to be accessible from patient rooms or wards. The space should be organized in a concentrated layout for efficiency of physical therapy, and floor planning for therapy units should ensure the best possible viewing angle to therapists. 2. With regard to the disease characteristics of patients, many physical therapy rooms were in difficult circumstances because of poor facilities, so they need to secure skilled personnel, supplement apparatuses and equipment and have rooms for functional recovery, hydrotherapy and operation treatment. In addition, each of the curtained or partitioned areas for treatment should be set up with consideration for the amount of space taken up by medical equipment. The area under each bed should be designed for patient convenience so that it can be used as storage space for patient's belongings and shoes. 3. Patients complained about the lack of physical therapy space, resting places or exercise areas and demanded the expansion of rehab programs and facilities. Physical therapy facilities need to be improved for patient privacy and effective natural ventilation. 4. At most of the long-term hospitals surveyed, physical therapy units were found to have small areas and treatment equipment and devices were insufficient compared to the number of patients. Therefore, it is required to secure more space (at least 138.24 sq. meters per 100 beds) and improve facilities for better physical therapy services.
Objectives: To help the Oriental medicine clinical studies for the common cold treatment, this study analyzed the tendency of research into complementary medicine on the common cold recently published in PubMed. Methods: This study analyzed 26 research papers on complementary medicine on the common cold published in PubMed Over the past 10 years. It measured annually and for each country the number of papers published, the number of subjects, the period of research, the area of trial, the method of study, the objective of study, and intervention, respectively and intervention, the objective of study, and the result of trials overall. Objectives The aim of this clinical study was to find out the changes of self-reported pain intensity before and after balneothrapy in participants with low back pain. Methods In this study 20 participants with low back pain went through 5 weeks of balneothrapy course, once in a week. Each week visual analogue scale (VAS) and pain threshold were measured before and after balneothrapy, which consisted of 30 minutes of high pressure underwater shower ($32{\sim}36^{\circ}C$) and another 30 minutes of whole body bathing ($32{\sim}40^{\circ}C$). Results 1. The average of VAS significantly decreased from $64.00{\pm}16.35$ to $34.00{\pm}15.69$ after 5 weeks of balneothreapy (p<0.001). 2. The average of pain threshold significantly increased from $8.31{\pm}2.52$ lbf to $9.53{\pm}3.11$ lbf after 5 weeks of balneothreapy (p<0.05). Conclusions The results showed that 5 weeks of balneotherapy had significant effect on alleviating pain in low back pain participants, which means balneothreapy may be used as a complementary treatment on musculoskeletal diseases and other chronic diseases. Further studies are anticipated in the future to find out other various effects of balneothrapy.
Objectives The purpose of this study was to investigate the clinical effects of repeatedly performed of balneotherapy on cervical pain. Methods We investigate 19 cervical pain subjects in this study. Subjects took 5 session of balneotherapy once a week during 5 weeks. Each session consisted of 15 minutes of high pressure underwater shower ($32{\sim}36^{\circ}C$) and another 15 minutes of whole body bathing ($32{\sim}40^{\circ}C$). To evaluate the efficiency of balneotherapy visual analogue scale (VAS) and pain threshold were applied before treatment and after 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th treatment. Then the results were analysed. Results 1) The average of VAS significantly decressed from $59.11{\pm}14.67$ to $33.95{\pm}20.988$ after 5 weeks of balneothreapy treatment (p<0.001). 2) The average of pain threshold significantly increased from $5.76{\pm}1.294$ lbf to $8.74{\pm}1.126$ lbf after 5 weeks of balneothreapy treatment (p<0.001). Conclusions Balneotherapy has clinical effscts of pain reduction on cervical pain subjects. Balneotherapy can be used in addition to the Oriental physiotherapy for high effective treatment on cervical pain. Further clinical studies are required to verify these findings.
The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the application of a medical cure with a mixture of the merit of a hydrotherapy, as a kind of a physical therapy, and the remedy efficacy of mugwort, which uses in a chinese medical treatment in order to remove an unpleasant smell of HOT Pack and its tube to use in hospital. The usability of mugwort and the degree of its preference was obtained through question naires sent to 120 students including 50 students of the department of physical therapy. And the feeling, at the moment a HOT Pack Tube was opened, was investigated through 74-physical therapists. This research is to investigate the effect of the remedy to add a mugwort-pack in a HOT Pack tube using already in hospital. The results of this study are as following : The efficacy of a mugwort-pack to get rid of an unpleasant smell got better than that of a HOT Pack and its tube. As most of physical therapy laboratory lies to a basement of a hospital, the efficacy to remove a particular offensive smell of a basement got better than that of a HOT Pack using in a common hospital. Also, the degree of patients' preference on a HOT Pack to add with mugwort got to be higher and increased gradually. I can't see the definite difference of a medical remedy, but, I suppose that the visible feeling was of much help for the effect of patients's remedy.
