  • This paper presents the multiscale calculation results of the very fast volume transport in micro/nano cylindrical tubes with the wall slippage. There simultaneously occurs the adsorbed layer flow and the intermediate continuum fluid flow which are respectively on different scales. The modeled fluid is water and the tube wall is somewhat hydrophobic. The calculation shows that the power loss on the tube no more than 1.0 Watt/m can generate the wall slippage even if the fluid-tube wall interfacial shear strength is 1 MPa; The power loss on the scale 104 Watt/m produces the volume flow rate through the tube more than one hundred times higher than the classical hydrodynamic theory calculation even if the fluid-tube wall interfacial shear strength is 1 MPa. When the wall slippage occurs, the volume flow rate through the tube is in direct proportion to the power loss on the tube but in inverse proportion to the fluid-tube wall interfacial shear strength. For low interfacial shear strengths such as no more than 1 kPa, the transport in the tube appears very fast with the magnitude more than 4 orders higher than the classical calculation if the power loss on the tube is on the scale 104 Watt/m.

  • Many plants and animals in nature have superhydrophobic surfaces. This superhydrophobic surface has various properties such as self-cleaning, moisture collection, and anti-icing. In this study, the superhydrophobic properties of PTFE surface were treated by plasma etching. There were four important factors that changed the surface properties. Micro-sized protrusions were formed by plasma etching. The most influential parameter was RF Power. The contact angle of the pristine PTFE surface was about 113.8°. The maximum contact angle of the surface after plasma treatment with optimized parameters was about 168.1°. In this case, the sliding angle was quite small about 1°. These properties made it possible to remove droplets easily from the surface. To verify the self-cleaning effect of the surface, graphite was used to contaminate the surface and remove it with water droplets. Graphite particles were easily removed from the optimized surface compared to the pristine surface. As a result, a surface having water repellency and self-cleaning effects could be produced with optimized plasma etching parameters.

  • Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) flat sheet hydrophobic membranes were prepared using 16 wt% PVDF in Dimethyl acetamide (DMAc) by phase inversion technique for desalination application using Membrane Distillation (MD). In this work, the effect of coagulation mediums such as ethanol and water as well their synergistic behavior on the fabricated PVDF membrane morphology was studied using SEM. Moreover, other characteristics required for the membrane distillation applications namely porosity, hydrophobicity and tensile strength were measured using the gravimetric method, sessile drop method and universal testing machine respectively. It was observed that the membrane morphology paradigm shifted from the finger-like structure to the sponge-like structure on increasing the ethanol concentration in coagulant. The porosity of the fabricated membrane was under the required MD range and found to be 57.3% at 16 weight % of PVDF in DMAc solvent under a pure ethanol coagulant bath. Moreover, the top surface contact angle ranges from 85° to 115° on increasing the bath concentration from CBC 0 to CBC 100 at 16 weight % of PVDF in DMAc solvent.

  • Curcumin, a hydrophobic polyphenol derived from turmeric, has been used a food additive and as a herbal medicine for the treatment of various diseases. In the present study, we found the functional role of a nanosphere loaded with curcumin (CN) in the promotion of the motility of human umbilical cord blood derived mesenchymal stem cells (hUCB-MSCs) during the wound closure. We found that the efficacy of hUCB-MSCs migration induced by CN was 1000-fold higher than that of curcumin powder. CN significantly increased the motility of hUCB-MSCs by activating c-Src, which is responsible for the phosphorylation of protein kinase C (PKC) and extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK). CN induced the expression levels of α-actinin-1, profilin-1 and filamentous-actin, as regulated by the phosphorylation of nuclear factor-kappa B during its promotion of cell migration. In a mouse skin excisional wound model, we found that transplantation of UCB-MSCs pre-treated with CN enhances wound closure, granulation, and re-epithelialization at mouse skin wound sites. These results indicate that CN is a functional agent that promotes the mobilization of UCB-MSCs for cutaneous wound repair.

  • In this review, surface modification methods of hydrophobic poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE) membrane are introduced and their improved hydrophilicity results are discussed. Fluoropolymer based membranes, represented by PTFE membranes have been used in various membrane separation processes, including membrane distillation, oil separation and gas separation. However, despite excellent physical properties such as chemical resistance, heat resistance and high mechanical strength, the strong hydrophobicity of PTFE membrane surface has become a challenging factor in expanding its membrane separation application. To improve the separation performance of PTFE membranes, wet chemical, hydrophilic coating, plasma, irradiation and atomic layer deposition are applied, modifying the surface property of PTFE membranes while maintaining their inherent properties.

  • This study was aimed at finding out the effect of soil conditioners on soil structural properties, soil water movements and soil losses. Sandy loam and silt loam soils were treated with two different kinds of soil conditioners, hydrophobic Bitumen 0.4% or hydrophilic Uresol 0.6%, and then various physical characteristics of the treated and untreated aggregates were determined. The results are summarized as follows: 1. By the soil conditioner treatment, Bitumen 0.4% or Uresol 0.6%, the aggregate stability was increased to 1.650-3.450 as compared to 0.275-0.417 of untreated soil and the sedimented bulk density was decreased. 2. Air-water permeability ratio of sandy loam was decreased to 2.2 by Uresol treatment as compared to untreated soil 3.8. In case of silt loam, it was decreased to 6.9 and 5.3 by Bitumen and Uresol treatment as compared to untreated 9.4, and water permeability of treated soil continued high value for 40 days. 3. Air-water permeability ratio was sharply enhanced as the structure instability index increased, but the ratio increased very smoothy after the index over 1. 4. The soil moisture retention was increased 2 to 6% by Uresol treatment, but it was decreased 1 to 3% by Bitumen treatment.

  • An ultrafiltration membrane (polyethersulfone, PM 10) was surface-modified by treating it with low-temperature plasmas of oxygen, acrylic acid (AA), acetylene, diaminocyolohexane (DACH), and hexamethyldisiloxane (HMDSO). The effects that these modifications have on the filtration efficiency of a membrane in waste water treatment were investigated. The oxygen, AA, and DACH plasma-treated membranes became more hydrophilic. The water contact angles ranged from < $10^{\circ}\;to\;55^{\circ}$ depending on the type of plasma and the treatment conditions. The oxygen plasma-treated membranes displayed a higher initial flux $(312-429\%),$ but lower rejection $(6-91\%),$ than did an untreated membrane. The AA plasma-treated membranes displayed lower or higher initial flux $(42-156\%),$ depending upon the treatment conditions, but higher rejection $(224-295\%)$ in all cases. The DACH plasma-treated membranes displayed lower initial flux. All of them, especially the AA plasma-treated membrane, displayed improved fouling resistance with either a slower or no flux decline. Acetylene and HMDSO plasma-treated membranes became more hydrophobic and displayed both lower initial flux and lower fouling resistance.

  • A nanostructure composite is a highly suitable substance for photoacoustic ultrasound generation. This allows an input laser beam (typically, nanosecond pulse duration) to be efficiently converted to an ultrasonic output with tens-of-MHz frequency. This type of energy converter has been demonstrated by using a carbon nanotube (CNT)-polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) composite film that exhibit high optical absorption, rapid heat transition, and mechanical durability, all of which are necessary properties for high-amplitude ultrasound generation. In order to develop the CNT-PDMS composite film, a high-temperature chemical vapor deposition (HTCVD) method has been commonly used so far to grow CNT and then produce a CNT-PDMS composite structure. Here, instead of the complex HTCVD, we use a mixed solution of hydrophobic multi-walled CNT and dimethylformamid (DMF) and fabricate a solution-processed CNT-PDMS composite film over a spherically concave substrate, i.e. a focal energy converter. As the solution process can be applied over a large area, we could easily fabricate the focal transmitter that focuses the photoacoustic output at the moment of generation from the CNT-PDMS composite layer. With this method, we developed photoacoustic energy converters with a large diameter (>25 mm) and a long focal length (several cm). The lens performance was characterized in terms of output pressure amplitude for an incident pulsed laser energy and focal spot dimension in both lateral and axial. Due to the long focal length, we expect that the new lens can be applied for long-range ultrasonic treatment, e.g. biomedical therapy.

  • Hydrophilic $SiO_2$ layers were obtained by the atmospheric-pressure plasma treatment. Superhydrophobic $SiO_2$ layers were first deposited by the electrospray deposition method. The electrospunable solution that was prepared based on the solgel method was sprayed on Si (100) substrates. The surface of the electrosprayed $SiO_2$ layers consisted of the agglomeration of nano-sized grains, which led to a very high roughness and revealed a very high contact angle to water droplets over $162^{\circ}$. After having been exposed to the atmospheric $Ar/O_2$ plasma, the observed superhydrophobicity of the $SiO_2$ layers were greatly changed: a dramatic variation of the water contact angle from $162^{\circ}$ to $3^{\circ}$, namely realization of superhydrophillicity. Interestingly, the surface microstructure was almost preserved. According to the XPS analysis, it is more likely that thanks to the plasma exposure, the surface of $SiO_2$ layers will be cleaned in terms of organic species that are hydrophobic-inducing, consequently leading to the hydrophilic nature observed for the plasma-exposed $SiO_2$ layers.

  • This study, by selecting 3 kinds(Polish T, H, C) of metal polish being frequently used for silver archival objects treatment at present, a polish having excellent conservative property that minimizes damage of silver surface while effectively removing its yellow discolored layer by each using tool was intended to be discovered by comparing performance of tarnish inhibitor, corrosion inhibitor contained in each polish. As a result of analysis, it was confirmed that specimen that was cleaned with cotton swab and lint-free wipe by using Polish C provides not only uniformed surface expression and minimum damage but also removal function of corrosion layer. In addition, even though tarnish inhibition film should be formed after polish treatment, discolored phenomenon is unable to be prevented but among those polishes, Polish C was represented to be most stable against UV and yellowing and it showed relatively better features than that of Polish H and T in terms of hydrophobic, dispersive property. Through this, it is confirmed that Polish C would show the most excellent performance among polishes being used for conserving silver archival objects.
