To develop carriers of hydrophobic anticancer agents based on chitosan, chitosan oligosaccharide lactate (COS) was chemically modified with lithocholic acid (LA) which is one of the bile acids as a hydrophobic group. The physicochemical properties of the lithocholic acid conjugated chitosan nanoparticles (COS-LA) were investigated using $^1H$-NMR spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering (DLS) and spectrofluorophotometer. COS-LA-paclitaxel (CLs-Tx) nanoparticles loading paclitaxel as an anticancer agent were prepared by a dialysis method and its loading efficiency was measured through HPLC. On the basis of DLS results, the estimated particle sizes of CLs-Tx were around 300 nm. Also, the critical micelle concentration (CMC) was proven to be dependent on the degree of substitution of lithocholic acid. It showed that the CLs-Tx has the superior potential for the application as a paclitaxel carrier.
Equilibrium swelling and pH-sensitivity of a polyelectrolyte copolymer hydrogel were controlled by employing copolymers with different hydrophilic-hydrophobic balances. Model pH-sensitive hydrogels, e.g., poly(methacrylic acid), poly(methacrylic acid-co-acrylamide), poly(methacrylic acid-co-2-hydroxyethylmethacrylate), poly(methacrylic acid-co-styrene) were synthesized at various monomer compositions. As hydrophobicity of the copolymer hydrogels increased, the equilibrium swelling decreased while the pH-sensitivity increased. In the case of poly(methacrylic acid-co-acrylamide), polymer-polymer interaction significantly affected the equilibrium swelling and provided a wide range control of pH-sensitivity.
The dyeing properties of modified wool were examined with a series of acid, reactive and cationic dyes. Cationic agent and sulphamic acid were applied to wool fabric for dye assist and resist effect. Wool pretreated with cationic agent showed better uptake of acid and reactive dyes than did untreated wool. On the other hand, the dyeing behavior of wool pretreated with sulphamic acid was found as follows : Acid dyes were poorly resisted with a hydrophobic mechanism but acid dyes were strongly resisted with a hydrophilic mechanism. Reactive dyes were also found to be effectively resisted. Sulphamic acid introduces sulphonate group into wool's structure, it has increased better uptake of cationic dyes than untreated wool. The degree of differential uptake depends on the level of pretreatment and produces a variety of tone-on-tone and multicolor effect in piece dyeing.
An electro- active polymer (EAP) (poly(2-acrylamido-2- methyl propane sulfonic acid), PAMPS) gel crosslinked with N,N-methylenebisacrylamide (MBAA) has been prepared by free radical polymerization in aqueous solution with potassium persulfate as initiator PAMPS gel was swollen in surfactant solution to substitute surfactant for using as actuator. PAMPS gel showed a large movement in the surfactant solution by electric field. PAMPS gel showed the reversible binding and fast response rate. Bending mechanism of gel is related to the cooperative process of hydrophobic interaction, swelling-deswelling of gel and the electrostatic attraction between anode (+) and the anions of PAMPS gel. The response rate of PAMPS gel was increased as the applied potential and the degree of cross-linkage were increased. The response rate was increased as the bending cycle was repeated, but it was decreased with increasing the gel thickness.

The effect of stabilizing single ammo acid replacements at the sites of Phe 51, Ala 70, and Met 374 on the folding of $\alpha$$_1$-antitrypsin was investigated by fluorescence spectroscopy. The residues Phe 51 and Met 374 are located in the hydrophobic core of the molecule, B $\beta$-sheet.(omitted)
Bovine gastricsin catalyzes peptide synthesis over an optimum range of pH 4~5, resulting in satisfactory yields of methyl esters and p-nitroanilides of benzyloxycarbonyl tetra- to hexa-peptides, provided that hydrophobic amino acid residues form new peptide bonds. The effectiveness of the enzyme also depends on the nature of adjacent amino acid residues. An aspartic proteinase with a characteristic gastricsin specificity pattern would be useful for the synthesis of middle-length peptides.
To develop the carrier of hydrophobic antifungal agents based on low molecular weight water-soluble chitosan (LMWSC), LMWSC was chemically modified with deoxycholic acid (DA) which is one of the bile acid as a hydrophobic group. The nanoparticles (WSCDA) using DA conjugated LMWSC were characterized using dynamic light scattering (DLS) and transmittance electron microscope (TEM). The particle size of WSCDA ranged from 250 to 350 nm and increased with the number of DA substitution. The loaded itraconazole as an antifungal agent WSCDA nanoparticles (WSCDA-ITCN) were prepared by solvent evaporation method. The drug content and the loading efficiency were investigated approximately $9{\sim}10%$ and $61{\sim}68%$ by UV spectrophotometer, respectively. The release of drug from nanoparticles was slow and showed sustained release characteristics. Based on the results of release study that the higher DA contents in WSCDA, the slower the releasing rate, the WSCDA-ITCN could be used as an excellent antifungal agent.

Nano adhesion between SPM (scanning probe microscope) tips and $DDPO_{4}$ (dodecylphosphoric acid ester) and $ODPO_{4}$ (octadecylphosphoric acid ester) SAM (self-assembled monolayer) was experimentally studied. Tests were performed to measure the nano adhesion and friction in both AFM(atomic force microscope) and LFM(lateral force microscope) modes with the applied normal load. $DDPO_{4}$ and $ODPO_{4}$ SAM were formed on TiMe and TiOx surfaces. TiMe and TiOx were coated on the Si wafer by ion sputtering. Adhesion and friction of $DDPO_{4}$ and $ODPO_{4}$ SAM surfaces were compared with those of OTS (octadecyltrichlorosilane) SAM and DLC surfaces. $DDPO_{4}$ and $ODPO_{4}$ SAM converted the TiMe and TiOx surfaces to be hydrophobic. When the surface was hydrophobic, the adhesion and friction forces were found lower than those of bare surfaces. Work of adhesion was also discussed to explain how the surface was converted into hydrophobic. Results also showed that tribological characteristics of $DDPO_{4}$ and $ODPO_{4}$ had good properties in the adhesion, friction, wetting angle and work of adhesion. $DDPO_{4}$ and $ODPO_{4}$ SAM could be one of the candidates for the bio-MEMS elements.
The chemical characterization of water-soluble organic carbon in ash emitted from a coal combustion boiler has not been reported yet. A total of 5 ash samples were collected from the outlet of an electrostatic precipitator in a commercial 500 MW coal-fired power plant, with their chemical characteristics investigated. XAD7HP resin was used to quantify the hydrophilic and hydrophobic water-soluble organic carbons (WSOC), which are the fractions of WSOC that penetrate and remain on the resin column, respectively. Calibration results indicate that the hydrophilic fraction includes aliphatic dicarboxylic acids and carbonyls (<4 carbons), amines and saccharides, while the hydrophobic fraction includes aliphatic dicarboxylic acids (>4-5 carbons), phenols, aromatic acids, cyclic acid and humic acid. The average mass of the WSOC in the ash samples was found to depend on the bituminous coal type being burned, and ranged from 163 to 259 ${\mu}g$ C/g of ash, which corresponds to 59-96 mg C of WSOC/kg of coal combusted. The WSOC mass accounted for 0.02-0.03 wt% of the used ash sample mass. Based on the flow rate of flue gas produced from the combustion of the blended coals in the 500 MW coal combustion boiler, it was estimated that the WSOC particles were emitted to the atmosphere at flow rates of 4.6-7.2 g C/hr. The results also indicated that the hydrophilic WSOC fraction in the coal burned accounted for 64-82% of the total WSOC, which was 2-4 times greater than the mass of the hydrophobic WSOC fraction.
A hydrophobic substrate triolein was hydrolyzed by lipase in a mono-phase reaction system containing cyclodextrin(CD) as emulsifier. The triolein was transformation to an emulsion-like state in the CD containing reaction system in contrast to the oil-droplet like state without CD due to the formation of an inclusion complex between the lipids and CDs. The hydyrolysis reaction increased substantially in the CD containing reaction system, and the optimum reaction conditions including the amount of lipase, ${\beta}$-CD concentration, and mixing ratio of triolein and ${\beta}$-CD, were determined. The performance of the enzyme reaction in a mono-phase reaction system was compared with that of a two-phase reaction system which used water immiscible hexane as the organic solvent. The role of a CD in the mono-phase reaction system was elucidated by comparing the degree of the inclusion complex formation with triolein and oleic acid, Km and Vmax values, and product inhibition by oleic aicd in aqueous and CD containing reaction systems. The resulting enhanced reaction seems to be caused by two phenomena; the increased accessibility of lipase to triolein and reduced product inhibition by oleic acid through the formation of an inclusion complex.
