The ecofriendly yellow ocher is used in the manufacturing of cosmetics, construction, and food packaging. The polyethylene terephthalate (PET) used for manufacturing food containers has a microporous structure that causes aeration. Hydrophilic yellow ocher may be applied to hydrophobic PET by surface modification to overcome this issue. The aim of this study is to fabricate a yellow ocher polystyrene hybrid structure in the form of nanoparticles using an optimizing molar ratio of styrene, divinylbenzene, and potassium peroxodisulfate for use in emulsion polymerization. The polymerization was conducted in a yellow ocher suspension that was prepared by dispersing mechanically ground yellow ocher in DI water. The prepared hybrid structure was measured using scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction. The measurement revealed the spherical morphology and Si component that resulted from the yellow ocher in the polystyrene particles. We expect that this hybrid structure would be used as platform material to minimize aeration in PET.

Hydrophilic monomers were polymerized for lamination on polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane surface for hydrophilization of the membranes. Hydrophilization reduced the contact angle from $95^{\circ}$ to $55^{\circ}$ and enhanced the water flux by 10 times while it reduced the bovine serum albumin (BSA) adsorption amount to 1/4 level. Thermal polymerization process was optimized by examining several operation parameters. Dimethyl oxobuthyl acrylamide (DOAA) showed the best effect due to its better hydrophilicity than others. Increase of amount of monomer enhanced the performance until the optimum concentration of 30 wt%, beyond which excess amount of monomer resulted in homopolymerization to deteriorate the performance. Azobis (isobutyronitrile)(AIBN) initiator has greater activation temperature range than benzoyl peroxide (BPO) and it showed better hydrophilation performance. Two stage lamination process, application of initiator followed by monomer addition, was more effective than one stage process, addition of initiator and monomer at once, which still reduced the contact angle but also reduced the water flux by pore blocking phenomena.

We have designed, fabricated and tested an integrated microfluidic chip with a Planar Hall Effect (PHE) sensor. The sensor was constructed by sequentially sputtering Ta/NiFe/Cu/NiFe/IrMn/Ta onto glass. The microfluidic channel was fabricated with poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) using soft lithography. Magnetic nanoparticles suspended in hexadecane were used as ferrofluid, of which the saturation magnetisation was 3.4 emu/cc. Droplets of ferrofluid were generated in a T-junction of a microfluidic channel after hydrophilic modification of the PDMS. The size and interval of the droplets were regulated by pressure on the ferrofluid channel inlet. The PHE sensor detected the flowing droplets of ferrofluid, as expected from simulation results. The shape of the signal was dependent on both the distance of the magnetic droplet from the sensor and the droplet length. The sensor was able to detect a magnetic moment of $2{\times}10^{-10}$ emu at a distance of 10 ${\mu}m$. This study provides an enhanced understanding of the magnetic parameters of ferrofluid in a microfluidic channel using a PHE sensor and will be used for a sample inlet module inside of integrated magnetic lab-on-a-chip systems for the analysis of biomolecules.
The modified surface of specialty carbon black(SCB) is one of the main technical factors for producing a uniform color and stable dispersion. In this work, the carboxylation or sulfonation process of SCB was used to improve the dispersive properties of hydrophilic solvents such as 1,6-hexanediol and propylene glycol monomethyl ether acetate(PGMEA). The results showed that the color strength of SCB DC2500G changed little with a range of 0.128~0.941(${\Delta}E$) compared to other SCB DC2500G material. In contrast, in the case of SCB EG410, there was a uniform color value with a range of 0.144~0.252(${\Delta}E$). Also, in our experiments, a modified SCB was confirmed by printing ink material as a melt coating paper. It may be possible that the SCB EG410 material can be advantageous as a gravure ink product. Finally, the modified SCB obtained from this research will have a large impact on the industry as a potential material for toners, paint, rubber, fillers, and other carbon black additives.

In this study, we demonstrated that the soft lithographic patterning processing of chemical vapor deposition (CVD) graphene and rGO sheets as large scale, low cost, high quality and simplicity for future industrial applications. Recently, a previous study has reported that single layer graphene grown via CVD was patterned and transferred to a target surface by controlling the surface energy of the polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) stamp [1]. Using this approach, the surface of a relief-patterned elastomeric stamp was functionalized with hydrophilic dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) molecules to enhance the surface energy of the stamp and to remove the graphene-based layer from the initial substrate and transfer it to a target surface [2]. Further, we developed a soft lithographic patterning process via surface energy modification for advanced graphene-based flexible devices such as transistors or simple and efficient chemical sensor consisting of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and a metallic nanoparticle composite. A flexible graphene-based device on a biocompatible silk fibroin substrate, which is attachable to an arbitrary target surface, was also successfully fabricated.

The control of wettability of thin films is of great importance and its success surely brings us huge applications such as self-cleaning, antifogging and bio-passive treatments. Usually, the control is accomplished by modifying either surface energy or surface topography of films. In general, hydrophobic surface can be produced by coating low surface energy materials such as fluoropolymer or by increasing surface roughness. In contrast, to enhance the hydrophillicity of solid surfaces, high surface energy and smoothness are required. Silica (SiO2) is environmentally safe, harmless to human body and excellently inert to most chemicals. Also its chemical composition is made up of the most abundant elements on the earth's crest, which means that SiO2 is inherently economical in synthesis. Moreover, modification in chemistry of SiO2 into various inorganic-organic hybrid materials and synthesis of films are easily undertaken with the sol-gel process. The contact angle of water on a flat silica surface on which the Young's equation operates shows ~50o. This is a slightly hydrophilic surface. Many attempts have been made to enhance hydrophilicity of silica surfaces. In recent years, superhydrophilic and antireflective coatings of silica were fabricated from silica nanoparticles and polyelectrolytes via a layer-by-layer assembly and postcalcination treatment. This coating layer has a high transmittance value of 97.1% and a short water spread time to flat of <0.5 s, indicating that both antireflective and superhydrophilic functions were realized on the silica surfaces. In this study, we assessed hydrophillicity and hydrophobicity of silica coating layers that were synthesized using the sol-gel process. Systematic changes of processing parameters greatly influence their surface properties.
In this study, a hydrophobic polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane was modified by coating neutral hydrophilic poly(vinyl alcohol). The flux of pure water was measured and then fouling test was conducted with bovin serum albumin (BSA) as model protein foulant. As a result, the experiments showed that pure water flux was decreased but anti-fouling property was significantly enhanced. Pure water flux with increasing molecular weights of the polymer was decreased and fouling resistance was enhanced. Also, Pure water flux with increasing solution concentration was decreased and fouling resistance was enhanced. It is probably due to the increase in hydrophilicity and decrease in roughness of the membrane surface, as revealed by contact angle and AFM analysis.

Hydrophilicity and hydrophobicity of pottery bodies can be controlled via chemical substitution of layered clay with hydrophilic and hydrophobic organics. In this study, organo-clay nanocomposites were prepared by ion-exchange of montmorillonite with dodecylamine and hexadecylamine, respectively. Substitution sites of organics and the interval changes of layered materials are characterized by FT-IR and WAXD and organics amounts loaded and water comtents contained by C/S analysis and TG-DSC. The organics were selectively intercalated so that increase layer interval from 12${\AA}\; to\;16{\AA}$. Organo-modified clay is changed to more hydrophobic comparing to clay itself.

This study reports a synthesis of an amphiphilic linear block copolymer consisting of a hydrophobic poly (lactide) (PLA) block and a hydrophilic hyperbranched polyglycerol (hbPG) block, PLA-b-hbPG. Simple chemical modification of the hbPG block with 4-hydroxycinnamic acid (CA) led to a photo-crosslinkable block copolymer, PLA-b-hbPG-CA. Nanosized micelles of the block copolyemrs were used as drug carriers for sustainable release. The hbPG shell made of a small molecular weight hbPG block showed excellent hydrophilicity, which can minimize in vivo toxicity. The UV-crosslinked PLA-b-hbPG-CA micelles loaded with drugs colud be served as a drug delivery carrier for its biocompatibility and self-assembled structures.
In order to use as supporters for the reinforced composite fuel cell membrane, poly(acrylic acid)-grafted porous polytetrafluoroethylenes (PTFEs) were prepared via introduction of poly(acrylic acid) graft chains by a radiation grafting method. FTIR was utilized to confirm the successful introduction of poly(acrylic acid) graft polymer chains into the porous PTFEs. Contact angles were examined to observe the hydrophilicity of the surface of the prepared substrates. The result indicates that the hyrophilicity of the surface in the prepared substrates increases with an increase in the number of hydrophilic polymer chains. FE-SEM, gurley number, and tensile strength were also utilized to characterize the prepared substrates.
