  • As a part of abating the formaldehyde emission of amino resin-bonded wood-based composite panels, this study was conducted to investigate hydrolytic stability of urea-melamine-formaldehyde (UMF) resin depending on various hydrolysis conditions and hardener types. Commercial UMF resin was cured and ground into a powdered form, and then hydrolyzed with hydrochloric acid. After the acid hydrolysis, the concentration of liberated formaldehyde in the hydrolyzed solution and mass loss of the cured UMF resins were determined to compare their hydrolytic stability. The hydrolysis of cured UMF resin increased with an increase in the acid concentration, time, and temperature and with a decrease in the smaller particle size. An optimum hydrolysis condition for the cured UMF resins was determined as $50^{\circ}C$, 90 minutes, 1.0 M hydrochloric acid and $250{\mu}m$ particle size. Hydrolysis of the UMF resin cured with different hardener types showed different degrees of the hydrolytic stability of cured UMF resins with a descending order of aluminum sulfate, ammonium chloride, and ammonium sulfate. The hydrolytic stability also decreased as the addition level of ammonium chloride increased. These results indicated that hardener types and level also had an impact on the hydrolytic stability of cured UMF resins.

  • Penicillin derivatives have a stability problem by hydrolysis of their .betha.-lactam ring. At high temperature, crystal water is released from penicillin derivatives, especially ampicillin trihydrate and concerns itself in hydrolysis. Penicillin derivatives having crystal water show different crystal states and different stability according to the variation of different condition on the process of manufacturing. The stability of ampicillin trihydrate in solid states was determined. Physico-pharmaceutical properties of this compound were determined by using IR spectra, X-ray powder diffraction and differential thermal analysis (DTA).

  • TIACA has two different side groups(ligands) as iso-propoxy groups and acetylacetonate groups. These two side groups have different hydrolysis rates. The two different rates of hydrolysis confer unique properties on TIACA, which are stability in aqueous solution and easy preparation of TiO2 and its multi components gels without precipitation. Their hydrolysis rates were monitored with I.R. and U.V. spectrophotometer.

  • This study was carried out to evaluate the stability of archival documents produced using papers. The properties of archival documents depend on the type of fillers of papers that are used such as fiber, non cellulose fiber, and mineral. The physio-chemical characteristics of archival documents were analyzed by employing acid hydrolysis against cellulose fiber substances. Fibers of Korean hand-made (Hanji), flex, and cotten papers showed higher pH and the degree of polymerization (DP) than wood fiber and mechanical fiber. Mechanical pulp containing 12.8% of lignin showed the greatest decrease of DP due to acid hydrolysis, and this resulted in increase of degree of aging. The filler found to clay and talc did not contain metal such as $Fe^{+2}$, $Fe^{+3}$, and $Cu^{+2}$. The alkaline metals such as Mg, Ca, and Ti showed greater resistance to acid hydrolysis.

  • Enzymatic treatment was conducted to hydrolyze pure cellulose nanofiber (PCNF), holocellulose nanofiber (HCNF), and lignocellulose nanofiber (LCNF) for 6, 24 and 72 hours and thus-obtained nanofibers (1, 3, 5, 10 wt%) were used to reinforce polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). Glucose production yield was increased by enzymatic hydrolysis. Tensile strength and elastic modulus of all PVA nanocomposite reinforced three nanofibers were improved by increasing enzymatic hydrolysis time of nanofibers and these values were higher in order of nanocomposite reinforced with PCNF>HCNF>LCNF. Furthermore, tensile properties of nanocomposite with PCNF were increased by nanofiber content. Thermal stability of PVA was improved by adding nanofibers and by increasing nanofiber content.

  • The hydrolysis of gallium(III) has been studied using potentiometric techniques under physiological conditions of temperature 37 C and ionic strength 0.15 moldm-3 NaCl and at different metal ion concentrations. Changes in pH were monitored with a glass electrode calibrated daily in hydrogen ions concentrations. The titration data within the pH range of 2.5-9.99 were analyzed to determine stability constants of hydroxide species using the SUPERQUAD program. Several different species were considered during the calculation procedure and the following hydroxides have been characterized: Ga(OH)3, Ga(OH)4- Ga3(OH)112-, Ga4(OH)11+ and Ga6(OH)153+. Speciation calculations based on the determined constants were then used to simulate the species distribution.

  • Hydrolysis of BTDA-ODA: MPDA, PMDA-ODA, PIQ polyimides were investigated by FT-IR. The results showed that hydrolysis depends on structure of polyimide and that polyimide obtains hydrolytic stability by curing. Polyimide-aluminum interfaces were characterized by RAIR. It was concluded that imidization of the polyamic acid to polyimde was inhibited by interaction of acid groups with substrate to form aluminum carboxylate.

  • The effects of temperature, pH, light and concentration on the degradation of trimebutine maleate in aqueous solution were investigated on the basis of accelerated stability analysis, and the stabilization of the solution was attempted by addition of several additives. The decomposition of trimebutine maleate in solution followed first-order reaction the was not only accelerated by temperature elevation but also the lower the concentratin the more speeded up the reaction. The decomposition mechanism of trimebtine could be confirmed by hydrolysis of ester bond in the structure. It was assumed trimebutine maleate is so photosensitive that the solution of the drug underwent accelerated decomposition under UV rays. What is more, the degradation of trimebutine solution was supposed to catalyzed by specific acid-base catalysis considered the pH dependence for the hydrolysis of ester, and the solution was most stable over the range of pH 2-2.8 in solution. The additives, citric acid, asparitc acid and glutamic acid, inhibited considerably the decomposition of the drug solution, and these additives might be used as stabilizers in trimebutine maleate solution.

  • This experiment was carried out to study changes in solubility and emulsifying properties of whey protein. Whey protein hydrolysates were obtained from tryptic hydrolysis of whey protein concentrate at pH 8.0 and 37$^{\circ}C$ for 6 hours. Emulsifying activity of whey protein hydrolysate was highest at 4 hours of hydroysis and at 5.50% of DH. During hydrolysis of whey protein concentrate with trypsin, ${\alpha}$-lactalbumin was not easily broken down. But ${\beta}$-lactoglobulin was hydrolysed rapidly from the early stage of hydrolysis, producing several low molecular weight peptides, which have to participate in increasing emusifying activity. The solulbility of hydyolysates tended to increase depending on hydrolysis time; however, there was a gradual decrease after 5 hours. The hydrolysate had a minimum solubility near the isoelectric point range (pH 4∼5). The more hydrolysed the whey protein concentrates, the more soluble they are near the pl. They aye also more soluble above pH 6. Emulsifying activity of hydrolysates showed similar results to solubility. Creaming stability gradually increased when hydrolysis increased, increasing rapidly above pH 8 after 4 hours of hydrolysis.
