  • Improved methodology of Synthetic Unit Hydrograph (SUH) utilized generally in hydrologic design work was suggested. In this study, regression analysis between peak hydrological data and geospatial data was applied to estimate specific peak flow and peak time for determining shape of SUH. Regression formulas for specific peak flow with respect to shape factors show higher coefficient of determination (0.73~0.81) than the ones with geospatial components only (0.52~0.69). The areal limitation of unit hydrograph application is regarded as 500~700 $km^2$. The validation through rainfall-runoff simulation shows encouraging results that relative error is 1.7~29.0%(Avg. 11.6%) for the case of using SUH developed in this study and 35.0~ 64.9% (Avg. 46.7%) for the SUH in the previous study except for the extraordinary cases.

  • This research is to show the application of runoff model and runoff analysis of urban storm drainage network. the runoff models that were used for this research were RRL, ILLUDAS, and SWMM applicative object basin were Geucknak-chun and Sangmu drainage basin located in Seo-Gu, Kwangju. The runoff analysis employed the design storm that distributed the rainfall intensity according to the return period after the huff's method. The result from the comparative analysis of the three runoff models was as follows The difference of peak runoff by return period was 20-30% at Sangmu drainage area of $3.17 Km^2$, while less than 10% at Geucknak-chun drainage area of $12.7 Km^2$. The peak runoff were similar to all models. At the runoff hydrograph the times between rising and descending points were in the sequence of RRL, ILLUDAS and SWMM, but the peak times were similar to all models. The conveyance coefficient to examine the conveyance of the existing drainage network was 0.94-1.37, which means insecure, in Geucknak-chun drainage basin and 0.69-1.16, which means secure, in sangmu drainage basin.

  • Recently some urban areas have been flooded due to heavy storm rainfalls. Though major causes of these floodings may be attributed to localized heavy rainfalls, other factors are related to urban flooding including deficiency of storm sewer network capacity, change of surface runoff due to covered open channels, and operational problems of storm drainage pump stations. In this study, hydrologic and hydraulic analysis of Sutak basin in Guri city were carried out to evaluate flooding problems occurred during the heavy storm in July, 2001. ArcView, a world most widely used GIS tool, was used to extract required data for the hydrologic analysis including basin characteristics data, concentration times, channel routing data, land use data, soil distribution data and SCS runoff curve number generation from digital maps. HEC-HMS, a GIS-based runoff simulation model, was successfully used to simulate the flood inflow hydrograph to Sutak pumping station.

  • Rainfall-runoff characteristics are analysed based on the geomorphological instantaneous unit hydrograph(GIUH) derived by geomorphological parameters using geographical information system in watershed ungaged or deficient of field data. Observed data of Seom river experiment watershed at upstream of Hoengseong dam and variable slope method for hydrograph separating of direct non are used. The 4th stream order of Seom river experimental watershed is developed with a regular correlation referred to the Horton-Strahler's law of stream order. The characteristic velocity to determine shape parameter of GIUH is 1.0m/s and its equation is modified for accurate results. Hydrograph at the outlet of 4th stream order of Maeil gage station and at the outlets of 3rd stream order of Sogun and Nonggeori gage stations show a little differences in falling limb of hydrograph but agree well to the observed data in general. The results by hydrological routing with HEC-HMS to the outlet of 4th stream order of Maeil gage station which the hydrograph by GIUH obtained at Sogun and Nonggeori gage stations of 3rd stream oder are applied as upstream inputs give better agreement with observed data than those by hydrograph by GIUH obtained at Maeil gage station of 4th stream order. In general, the rainfall-runoff by GIUH has applicability to the watershed routing of ungaged project regions.

  • The mathematical analysis of the outflow hydrograph resulting from earth dam-break was studied. DBFW(Dam Break Flood Wave) model based on the breach mechanism and reservoir storage equation was developed and was applied to the Teton and Buffalo-Creek dam. The modeling results showed that the shape of outflow hydrograph, peak discharge and failure duration time had a good agreement with the data analyzed by NWS. The breach mechanisms which exert influence on the outflow hydrograph were consisted of geomorphological characteristics of the reservoir, breach mode, breach width and failure duration time. The earth dams in Korea were classified into four types by the reservoir geomorphology, and water surface elevation-failure duration time-peak discharge relationships were also presented. The methodological procedure made in this paper will provide a basic contribution to dam-break study in river system.

  • It is necessary to estimate the groundwater recharge rate properly to predict the demand of groundwater and to establish the plan for the development of groundwater in the future. In this paper, A small basin in Chojung area is selected to calculate the groundwater recharge rate. In the calculation, water balance analysis, SCS-CN (Soil Conservation Service-Curve Number) method. groundwater-level analysis and hydrograph of outflow analysis are applied to this area. Data of precipitation measured by Chungju climatological station for about 10 years are used for water balance analysis and SCS-CN method. For the groundwater-level analysis. variations of groundwater-level measured from the 3 test wells in 1997's are used and stage-discharge rating curves in this area for 3 years are used for the hydrograph of outflow. The recharge rate calculated by water balance is 19%, 12.95% by SCS-CN method. 16.51% by groundwater-level analysis and 10.9% by hydrograph of outflow analysis and the overall average recharge rate is about 14.84%.

  • Generally, design flood for a hydraulic structure is estimated using statistical analysis of runoff data. However, due to the lack of runoff data, it is difficult that the statistical method is applied for estimation of design flood. In this case, the synthetic unit hydrograph method is used generally and the models such as NYMO method, Snyder method, SCS method, and HYMO method have been widely used in Korea. In this study, these methods and KICT method, which is developed in year 2000, are compared and analyzed in 10 study areas. Firstly, peak flow and peak time of representative unit hydrograph and synthetic unit hydrograph in study area are compared, and secondly, the shape of unit hydrograph is compared using a root mean square error(RMSE). In Nakayasu method developed in Japan, synthetic unit hydrograph is very different from peak flow, peak time, and the shape of representative unit hydrograph, and KICT method(2000) is superior to others. Also, KICT method(2000) is superior to others in the aspects of using hydrologic and topographical data. Therefore, Nakayasu method is not a proper in hydrological practice. Moreover, it is considered that KICT model is a better method for the estimation of design flood. However, if other model, i.e. SCS method, Nakayasu method, and HYMO method, is used, parameters or regression equations must be adjusted by analysis of real data in Korea.

  • In this study, Miho stream basin(Seokhwa water level gauging station) In Geum river, Flood control main station of Geum River Flood Control Office, is selected. Hydrologic topographical informations are calculated using WMS which is hydrologic analysis software coupled with GIS Method, and flood analysis is accomplished by HEC-1 included In WMS. To calculate the effective rainfall CN values of SCS are used. Clark, Snyder and SCS methods are selected respectively to derive unit hydrograph. This study shows the applicability of GIS techniques to runoff simulation in ungauged basin by comparing with actual measured flood hydrograph. As a results, Snyder(Tulsa) method and Clark (Herby) method is suitable to Miho stream basin. But Snyder(Tulsa) method is suitable more than Clark(Herby) method. And according to the degree of urbanization, the peak discharge has increased and the peak time has tended to decrease.
