The weakening effect of water on rocks is one of the main factors inducing deformation and failure in rock engineering. To clarify this weakening effect, immersion tests and post-immersion triaxial compression tests were conducted on sandstone and mudstone. The results showed that the strength of water-immersed sandstone decreases with increasing immersion time, exhibiting an exponential relationship. Similarly, the strength of water-immersed mudstone decreases with increasing environmental humidity, also following an exponential relationship. Subsequently, a statistical damage model for water-weakened rocks was proposed, changes in elastic modulus to describe the weakening effect of water. The model effectively simulated the stress-strain relationships of water-affected sandstone and mudstone under compression. The R2 values between the theoretical and experimental peak values ranged from 0.962 to 0.996, and the MAPE values fell between 3.589% and 9.166%, demonstrating the model's effectiveness and reliability. The damage process of water-saturated rocks corresponds to five stages: compaction stage - no damage, elastic stage - minor damage, crack development stage - rapid damage increase, post-peak residual stage - continuous damage increase, and sliding stage - damage completion. This study provides a foundational reference for researching the fracture characteristics of overlying strata during coal mining under complex hydrogeological conditions.

In order to design a standing column well (SCW) for a sustainable groundwater curtain system for greenhouse heating, we conducted parameter sensitivity tests. These tests simulated the outlet temperature changes of the SCW in a groundwater recirculating greenhouse cultivation system. Our modeling considered ground thermal conductivity and hydrogeological conditions. Specifically, we examined several factors, including SCW length, enhanced thermal conductivity of the ground, and groundwater circulation rate. The simulation results indicated that there was not a significant difference in the heat exchange rate based on the characteristics of enhanced thermal conductivity. However, we anticipate a substantial difference in the case of varying SCW lengths. Therefore, we conclude that the simulation results are primarily influenced by conductive heat exchange values, as the circulating water remains at a constant groundwater level.

The geological factors for causing ground subsidence are very diverse. It can be affected by any geological or extrinsic influences, and even within the same geological factor, the soil depression impact factor can be determined by different physical properties. As a result of reviewing a large number of papers and case histories, it can be seen that there are seven categories of ground subsidence factors. The depth and thickness of the overburden can affect the subsidence depending on the existence of the cavity, whereas the depth and orientation of the boundary between soil and rock are dominant factors in the ground composed of soil and rock. In case of soil layers, more various influencing factors exist such as type of soil, shear strength, relative density and degree of compaction, dry unit weight, water content, and liquid limit. The type of rock, distance from the main fracture and RQD can be influential factors in the bedrock. When approaching from the hydrogeological point of view, the rainfall intensity, the distance and the depth from the main channel, the coefficient of permeability and fluctuation of ground water level can influence to ground subsidence. It is also possible that the ground subsidence can be affected by external factors such as the depth of excavation and distance from the earth retaining wall, groundwater treatment methods at excavation work, and existence of artificial facilities such as sewer pipes. It is estimated that to evaluate the ground subsidence factor during the construction of underground structures in urban areas will be essential. It is expected that ground subsidence factors examined in this study will contribute for the reliable evaluation of the ground subsidence risk.
Lead bas been found in the groundwater in Door County, Wiscorsin, with temporally and spatially irregular distribution in concentration. Correlation coeffidents were calculated among lead indicators in groundwater(frequency of lead detections, mean and maximum concentration of lead detections) and seven independent variables(stucture and geographic factors of wells, hydrogeological factors at lead-arsenate mixing sites and the level of soil contamination) which are possibly related to the lead level in groundwater. The significance of relationships was determined statistically by a t-test at the 90% confidence level, and indicated that the spatially located lead-arsenate mixing sites provided the lead in groundwater in the study area. A total of 112 groundwater samples were collected from 5 house wells with previous lead detects. Lead was detected in partides on ifiter papers with $0.45{\;}\mu\textrm{m}$ pore size, but not in filtrates. The result of chemical analysis for lead indicates that lead is associated with partides in groundwater in Door County. Subsequently, the irregular distribution of lead in the county results from the transport of particulate lead along the advective groundwater movement through the preferential pathways sucn as vertical and bedding-plane joints.

Overseas examples of the characterization stage of site selection proposed by the International Atomic Energy Agency were reviewed to highlight the factors necessary for consideration in the deep disposal of high-level radioactive waste. Studies in Sweden, Finland, the USA, and Canada were considered. Site investigations in Sweden and Finland commonly covered the fields of geology, hydrogeology, and hydrogeochemistry using similar field investigation techniques. The USA considered survey groups and factors under pre- and post-lockdown guidelines, as well as those for desaturated and saturated surveys. involving geophysical, hydrological, hydrogeological, hydrogeochemical, mechanical/physical, and thermal-characterization investigations. Canada provided a list of investigative methods for both preliminary and detailed site assessments including geological, physical, boring, hydrological, laboratory testing, and chemical analysis studies. Results of this study should elucidate site-selection investigation factors and survey methods applicable to Korea.

The DRASTIC system is widely used for assessing regional groundwater pollution susceptibility by using hydrogeological factors such as depth to water, net recharge, aquifer media, soil media, topography, vadose zone media, hydraulic conductivity. This study is providing Modified Drastic Model to which lineament density, land use, influence of groundwater drawdown caused by tunnel excavation are added as additional factors using geographic information system, and then to evaluate groundwater contamination potential of ${\bigcirc}{\bigcirc}$ area. For statistical analysis, vector coverage per each factor is converted to grid layer and after each correlation coefficient between factors, covariance, variance, eigenvalue and eigenvector by principal component analysis of 3 direction, are calculated, correlation between factors is analyzed. Also after correlation coefficients between general DRASTIC layer and rated lineament density layer, between general DRASTIC layer and rated land use layer, between general DRASTIC layer and rated tunnel excavation influence layer are calculated, final modified DRASTIC model is constructed by using them with each weighting. When modified DRASTIC model was compared with general DRASTIC model, contamination potential in modified DRASTIC model is fairly detailed and consequently, vulnerable area which has high contamination potential could be presented concretly.
The design factors of artificial recharge are determined by considering the hydrogeological characteristics of the aquifer. The optimal design factors for artificial recharge were derived after performing the injection tests step by step for each injection type (vertical well, ditch and mixed type), which were built in the test site of the study area. It was analyzed that the difference in the injection effect according to the diameter of the injection well was not large, and the 100 mm well was evaluated as appropriate in consideration of the availability and economy of land use. Since the injection effect was well maintained even in the upper rock, the depth of the injection well was proposed for the alluvial layer and the upper rock layer. On the other hand, in four cases of filter media in the ditch, it was analyzed that the penetration efficiency and the hydraulic interference effect indicated excellent injection performance when a filter medium of 10 to 30 mm diameter was filled in the ditch. In addition, the proper spacing of the injection wells was analyzed as 9~12 m considering the interference efficiency. The interference efficiency attenuation coefficient per 1 m of hole spacing was calculated to be 1.75% in this area. In the future study, the artificial recharge design factors obtained in this stage are applied and verified on site construction and operation. Also it is expected to contribute to securing water in areas where there is always a lack of water.
A field investigation was conducted on an aquifer contaminated with trichloroethylene (TCE) for application of in situ reactive zone treatment using nanosized zero-valent iron (NZVI). The aquifer was an unconfined aquifer with a mean hydraulic conductivity of $5.14{\times}10^{-4}cm/sec$, which would be favorable for NZVI injection. Seasonal monitoring of TCE concentration revealed a presence of non-aqueous phase liquid form of TCE near IW (injection well). The hydrochemical data characterized the site groundwater to be a $Ca-HCO_3$ type. The average value of Langelier Saturation Index of the groundwater was -1.33, which implied that the site was favorable for corrosion of NZVI. Dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration varied between 2.5~11.5 mg/L, which indicated that DO would greatly compete with TCE as an electron acceptor. The hydrogeological and hydrochemical characterization reveals that the time around November would be appropriate for NZVI injection when water level and temperature are relatively high and DO concentration is low.
The recent increase in demand for lithium has led to the development of new brine prospects, The brines are hosted in closed salar basin aquifers of two types that are mature halite salars and immature clastic salars. Salar brines also contain other elements of commercial interest, most notably potassium and boron. As a result, there has been a plethora of new exploration projects focused on the brines hosted in the aquifers of the intermontane-closed basins. The estimate of lithium resources and reserves in these salars depends on a detailed knowledge of aquifer geometry, porosity, and brine grade. Because the resource is in a fluid state, it has the propensity to move, mix, rearrange itself relatively rapidly during the course of a project lifetime, and lower recovery factors compared with most metalliferous and industrial mineral deposits due to reliance on pumping of the brine from wells for extraction. This is unlike any other type of metallic mineral resource and hence a different approach specially focusing on hydrogeology and brine hydrology is required for these prospects.
At present underground structures such as road tunnels, railway tunnels, underground petroleum storages and radioactive waste storages are being constructed in numerous places in Korea. For the construction of underground structrues, it should be accounted for natural factors (geology, hydrogeology, soil, vegetation, topography and drainage patterns) and human-social factors (land use, urbanization, population, culture and transportation). Especially, hydrogeology should be regarded as an important factor for evaluating the safety of underground structures and their impact to groundwater system around the structures. This study aimed to recognize hydrogeological characteristics of shallow formations in the area from Dongrae crossway to Seo-Dong where 45 boreholes were drilled for the construction of Line-3 subway in Busan Megacity. Slug tests for unsaturated and saturated zones were conducted on 30 boreholes in the study area. From the result of the slug tests, it was identified that average zonal hydraulic conductivity in the unsaturated zone was higher than that in the saturated zone. Besides, the slug test result in the saturated zones may reflect hydraulic properties of the upper most part of the saturated zones.
