The study was performed to investigate the effects of gaseous imission of sulfur dioxide and hydrogen fluoride on the growth of rice plant under stressed field conditions. The plants were cultivated in normal paddy fields where are 88 industrial plants operating with 285 smoke stacks emitting pollutants. There has been a number of reported studies (1, 3, 11, 19, 20) which deal with rice plant damages by air pollution under a simulated exposure experimental condition. Furthermore, these experiments were conducted to examine effects of a single pollutant on the plant. Furthermore, these experiments were conducted to examine effects of a single pollutant on the plant. In korea, however, there is no study reported in literature with respect to the in-situ dose-response relationship between rice pant reduction in yields and air pollution. This study is specifically dealt with multiple effects of sulfur dioxde and hydrogen fluoride on various plant growth indicators such as leaf damage, culm height, weight of grain, panicles per hill, spikelets per panicle and percent fertility. It appears that there is a good correlation between ambient concentrations of sulfur oxides and sulfur contents found in leaves with an average correlation coefficient of 0.868 within a 1% significance level. It is interesting to note that a better multiple correlation was found between percent leaf damage and sulfur and fluoride contentd found in leaf with a significance of 1% level. The yearly correlation coefficient ranges from 0.963 to 0.987 with an average being 0.971. It is, therefore, believed that a percent leaf damage may serve as a single indicator of pollutional damages to rice plant cultivating in fields. Regarding other factors to the diminution of rice plant growth in polluted atmosphere, it appears that a significant correlation to culm length and dry weight of grain with a 1% significance level whereas T/R ratio has a good correlation with lead damage within 5% significance level. An evaluation of data observed has demonstrated that both panicles per hill and percent fertility are significantly affected by air pollutants. As expected, hydrogen fluoride has more effects than sulfur oxide. It is, however, interesting to note that spikelets per panicles has slightly been affected while no indication of effects on 1000-grain-weight has been observed. This may lead to a conclusion that a reduction in yield of rice under polluted field conditions may have more been caused by the diminution of panicles per hill and percent fertility rather than by the diminution of spikelets per panicle and grain weight.

Global climate changes caused by $CO_2$ emissions are currently debated around the world; green sources of energy are being sought as alternatives to replace fossil fuels. The sustainable use of biogas for energy production does not contribute to $CO_2$ emission and has therefore a high potential to reduce them. Catalytic steam reforming of a model biogas ($CH_4:CO_2$ = 60%:40%) is investigated to produce $H_2$-rich synthesis gas. The biogas utilized 3D-IR matrix burner in which the surface combustion is applied. The ruthenium catalyst was used inside a reformer. Parametric screening studies were achieved as Steam/Carbon ratio, biogas component ratio, Space velocity and Reformer temperature. When the condition of Steam/Carbon ratio, $CH_4/CO_2$ ratio, Space velocity and Refomer temperature were 3.25, 60% : 40%, $14.7L/g{\cdot}hr$ and $550^{\circ}C$ respectively, the hydrogen concentration and methane conversion rate were showed maximum values. Under the condition mentioned above, $H_2$ yield, $H_2$/CO ratio, CO selectivity and energy efficiency were 0.65, 2.14, 0.59, 51.29%.
Sodium borohydride, $NaBH_4$, shows a number of advantages as hydrogen source for portable proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). Properties of $NaBH_4$ hydrolysis reaction using activated carbon supported Co-B/C, Co-P-B/C catalyst were studied. BET surface area of catalyst, yield of hydrogen, effect of $NaBH_4$ concentration and durability of catalyst were measured. The BET surface area of carbon supported catalyst was over $500m^2/g$ and this value was 2~3 times higher than that of unsupported catalyst. Hydrogen generation of activated carbon supported catalyst was more stable than that of unsupported catalyst. The activation energy of Co-P-B/C catalyst was 59.4 kJ/mol in 20 wt% $NaBH_4$ and 14% lower than that of Co-P-B/FeCrAlloy catalyst. Catalyst loss on activated carbon supported catalyst was reduced to about 1/3~1/2 compared with unsupported catalyst, therefore durability was improved by supporting catalyst on activated carbon.
Arylation reactions of styrene catalyzed by Pd(CF3CO2)2-sulfides and Pd(CF3CO2)2-phosphines were investigated. The yield of trans-stilbene, the main product, increased as the basicity of the substituents on the aryl groups of the phosphines increased and the steric hindrance of the substituents decreased. The mechanism of the aryl migration of arylphosphines to styrene is proposed to involve the electrophilic attack of Pd to the phenyl group on the phosphines. The phosphine systems were found to be more effective than the sulfide ones.
Direct reaction of elemental silicon with a gaseous mixture of isopropyl chloride (1) and hydrogen chloride in the presence of copper catalyst using a stirred bed reactor equipped with a spiral band agitator gave isopropyldichlorosilane having a Si-H bond (2a) as a major product and isopropyltrichlorosilane (2b) along with chlorosilanes, trichlorosilane and tetrachlorosilane. A process for production of 2a was maximized using the 1:0.5 mole ratio of 1 to HCl and smaller size of elemental silicon at a reaction temperature of 220 °C. When a reaction was carried out by feeding a gaseous mixture of 1 [12.9 g/h (0.164 mol/h)] and HCl [2.98 g/h (0.082 mol/h)] to a contact mixture of elemental silicon (360 g) and copper (40 g) under the optimum condition for 45 h, 2a among volatile products kept up about 82 mol % until 35 h and then slowly decreased down 68 mol % in 45 h reaction. Finally 2a was obtained in 38% isolated yield (based on 1 used) with an 85% consumption of elemental silicon in a 45 h reaction. In addition to 2a, 2b was obtained as minor product along with chlorosilanes, trichlorosilane, and tetrachlorosilane. The decomposition of 1 was suppressed and the production of 2a improved by adding HCl to 1.
Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were grown by a thermal chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method, which has been regarded as one of the most promising candidates for the synthesis of CNTs due to low cost and high growth yield. The Ethylene $(C_2H_4)$, hydrogen $(H_2)$ and Argon(Ar) gases were used for the growth of CNTs at $700^{\circ}C$. As a catalyst for CNTs growth, Fe thin film and Iron nitrate and Molybdenyl acetylacetonate solution with alumina nano-particle were prepared on $SiO_2/Si$ substrate. The growth properties of CNTs were analyzed by SEM and AFM.
Hizikia fusiformis hydroysates by five carbohydrases (Viscozyme, Celluclast, Termamyl and Ultraflo) and five proteases (Protamex, Kojizyme, Neutrase, Flavourzyme and Alcalase) were investigated for their extraction efficacy (yield and total total polyphenolic content) and antioxidative activity (DPPH radical and hydrogen peroxide scavenging activity). Termamyl and Ultraflo of the carbohydrases and Flavourzyme and Alcalase of proteases were selected by their high eficacy of extraction and antioxidative activity. Selected enzymes were used to investigate the optimum enzymatic reaction time and dosage (enzyme/substrate ratio) suitable for hydorolysis. Optimum reaction time for the enzymatic hydrolysis was 3 days and optimum dosage of hydrolysis was observed as 5%. Simultaneously, Ultraflo of the two carbohydrases and Alcalse of the two proteases were selected as the most effective enzymes. Combination of Ultraflo and Alcalase under optimum hydrolysis conditions could intensify the extraction efficacy of antioxidative materials form H. fusiformis. The hydrolysate obtained by combining the enzymes was separated into four different molecular weight fractions (<1kD, 1-10 kD, 10-30 kD and >30 kD) and recorded the polyphenolic content distribution and respective antioxidative ability. The fraction <1kD was identified as less effective and those fractions > 1kD indicated comparatively higher antioxidative activities related to their polyphenolic content.

For gaseous fuel combustion with inherent $CO_2$ capture and low NOx emission, chemical-looping combustion(CLC) may yield great advantages of savings of energy to $CO_2$ separation and suppressing the effect on environment. In chemical-looping combustor, fuel is oxidized by metal oxide medium (oxygen carrier particle) in a reduction reactor. Reduced particles are transported to oxidation reactor and oxidized by air and recycled to reduction reactor. The fuel and the air are never mixed, and the gases from reduction reactor, $CO_2$ and $H_2O$, leave the system as separate stream. The $H_2O$ can be easily separated by condensation and pure $CO_2$ is obtained without any loss of energy for separation. The purpose of this study is to demonstrate inherent $CO_2$ separation and no NOx emission and to confirm high $CO_2$ selectivity, no side reaction (i.e., carbon deposition, hydrogen generation) by continuous reduction and oxidation experiment in a 50kWtb chemical-looping combustor. NiO/bentonite particle was used as a bed material and $CH_4$ and air were used as reacting gases for reduction and oxidation respectively.

The spectroscopic properties of quercetin (QCT) were studied in the AOT reverse micelle by fluorescence spectroscopy. Because the molecular structure of QCT is completely planar, excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) occurs between the -OH at C(5) and carbonyl oxygen via intramolecular hydrogen bonding. This ESIPT happens at the $S_1$ state but not at the $S_2$ state. Because QCT is a good donor-acceptor-conjugated molecule at the excited state, this molecule can emit strong fluorescence but shows no $S_1{\rightarrow}S_o$ emission due to this ESIPT. Since the $S_2{\rightarrow}S_1$ internal conversion was very slow due to the small Franck-Condon factors, $S_2{\rightarrow}S_o$ fluorescence emission was observed. All of the experimental results indicated that the QCT resided at the bound water interface and that the position of solute did not change significantly in the micelle at various water concentrations.
