  • Recently, the power and refrigeration cogeneration based on Kalina cycle has attracted much attention for more efficient utilization of low-grade energy. This study presents a thermodynamic performance analysis of a cogeneration cycle of power and absorption refrigeration based on Kalina cycle. The cycle combines Kalina cycle (KCS-11) and absorption cycles by adding a condenser and an evaporator between turbine and absorber. The effects of ammonia mass fraction and separation pressure were investigated on the system performance of the system. Results showed that the energy utilization of the system could be greatly improved compared to the basic Kalina cycle.

  • The worldwide annual production of polyolefins amounted to 60 million tons in 2000. During the process, 1-2 wt% of the olefin monomers have been emitted and flared into the air, causing the huge energy consumption and severe carbon dioxide emission. Recently, membrane process has been proved to be the most competitive among other separation processes in terms of cost of equipments, energy consumption and safety in this application. The performance of membrane process highly depends on the membrane properties and thus, it is very important to develop good membrane materials and composite membranes. We prepared PMDS dense and composite membranes and studied basic permeation behaviors of a series of olefins(ethylene, propylene, 1 -butylene), nitrogen and hydrogen as model gases.

  • Palladium membranes have high selectivity of separation and removal of hydrogen to chemical process at high temperature. For the development of hydrogen permeable membrane, palladium was deposited on porous stainless steel support by electroless plating method. In this work, the activation effect on the surface of stainless steel support has been investigated for the effective palladium plating. The morphology and microstructure were characterized by SEM and the composition was analyzed by EDX. It is found that the composition of deposited nuclei on the stainless steel support was changed in accordance with activation cycles. It is also observed that Sn-enriched nuclei has been changed to Pd-enriched nuclei over the fifteenth activation. The uniform deposition of the dense palladium layer on porous stainless steel support has been performing with Sn-enriched nuclei and comparing with Pd-enriched nuclei.

  • Chiral recognition models for resolving π-basic N-acyl-α-(1-naphthyl)alkylamines and π-acidic N-(3,5-dinitrobenzoyl)-α-amino alkyl esters on a (S)-tyrosine-derived chiral stationary phase (CSP) containing both π-basic and π-acidic interaction site have been proposed. In the models, the CSP was supposed to interact with the analytes through the π-π interaction between the 3,5-dinitrophenyl or the 3,5-dimethylphenyl group of the CSP and the 1-naphthyl or the 3,5-dinitrophenyl group of the analyte, and through the hydrogen bonding interaction between the appropriate N-H hydrogen of the CSP and the appropriate carbonyl oxygen of the analyte. In this instance, the alkyl substituent of the pertinent enantiomer of the analyte was found to intercalate between the adjacent strands of the bonded phase and consequently control the trends of the separation factors.

  • Two-dimensional (2D) or layered materials have a great potential for applications in energy storage, catalysis, optoelectronics and gas separation. Fabricating novel 2D or quasi-2D layered materials composed of relatively abundant and inexpensive atomic species is an important issue for practical usage in industry. Here, we suggest the layer-structured AlOOH (Boehmite) as a promising candidate for such applications. Boehmite is a well-known layer-structured material and a single-layer can be exfoliated from the bulk boehmite by breaking the interlayer hydrogen bonding. We study atomic and electronic band structures of both bulk and single-layer boehmite, and also obtain the single-layer exfoliation energy using first-principles calculations.

  • A novel process to recover lithium and manganese oxides from a cathode material (LiMn2O4) of spent lithium-ion battery was attempted using thermal reaction with hydrogen gas at elevated temperatures. A hydrogen gas as a reducing agent was used with LiMn2O4 powder and it was found that separation of Li2O and MnO was taken place at 1050℃. The powder after thermal process was washed away with distilled water and only lithium was dissolved in the water and manganese oxide powder left behind. It was noted that manganese oxide powder was found to be 98.20 wt.% and the lithium content in the solution was 1,928 ppm, respectively.

  • This paper describes numerical efforts to characterize the flame-holding and air-fuel mixing process of model SCRamjet engine combustor, where a hydrogen jet injected into a supersonic cross flow and in a cavity Combustion phenomena in a model SCRamjet engine, which has been experimentally studied at University of Queensland and Australian National University using a free-piston shock tunnel, was observed around separation region of upstream of the normal injector and inside of cavity. The results show that the separation region and cavity generates several recirculation zones, which increase the fuel-air mixing. Self ignition occurs in the separation-freestream and cavity-freestream interface.

  • This article reports a spontaneous method for controlling the growth mode from vertically arrayed ultra-slim MgZnO nanowires to nanowalls through the Zn random motion of seeds formed by surface phase separation by Mg injection near an evaporation temperature of Zn. The random motion of single crystal MgZnO seeds with relative Zn rich phase played a vital role in the growth of the MgZnO nanowalls. The seeds were networked with increasing Zn flux compared with Mg flux and closing to the evaporation temperature of Zn on phase separation layers. We achieved fabrication of MgZnO nanowalls on various non- and conducting substrates by this advanced growth method. The MgZnO nanowalls hydrogen sensor showed an improved sensing performance compared to the MgZnO nanowires grown under the similar conditions. Based on the microstructural characterizations, the growth procedure and models for the evolution of the structure transition from MgZnO nanowires to nanowalls on the Si substrates are proposed for phased growth times.

  • This study was carried out to recover gold, silver and other valuable metals from the printed circuit boards (PCB) of waste computers. PCB samples were crushed to under 1mm by a shredder and initially separated into 30% conducting and 70% non-conducting materials by an electrostatic separator. The conducting materials, which contained the valuable metals, were then used as the feed material for magnetic separation where it was found that 42% was magnetic and 58% non- magnetic. The non-magnetic materials contained 0.227mg/g Au and 0.697mg/g Ag. Further leaching of the non-magnetic component using 2.0M sulfuric acid and 0.2M hydrogen peroxide at 85$^{\circ}C$ extracted more than 95% copper, iron, zinc, nickel and aluminium. Au and Ag were not extracted in this solution, however, more than 95% of Au and 100% of Ag were selectively leached with a mixed solvent (0.2M ammonium thiosulfate, 0.02M copper sulfate, 0.4M ammonium hydroxide). Finally, the residues were reacted with a NaCl solution to leach out Pb while sulfuric acid was used to leach out Sn. Recoveries reached 95% and 98% in solution, respectively.
