  • This paper presents an integrated procedure to predict the temperature and moisture distributions in hardening concrete considering the effects of temperature and aging. The degree of hydration is employed as a fundamental parameter to evaluate hydro-thermal-mechanical properties of hardening concrete. The temperature history and temperature distribution in hardening concrete is evaluated by combining cement hydration model with three-dimensional finite element thermal analysis. On the other hand, the influences of both self-desiccation and moisture diffusion on variation of relative humidity are considered. The self-desiccation is evaluated by using a semi-empirical expression with desorption isotherm and degree of hydration. The moisture diffusivity is expressed as a function of degree of hydration and current relative humidity. The proposed procedure is verified with experimental results and can be used to evaluate the early-age crack of hardening concrete.

  • The sludge grown up in steam generators of nuclear power plants shortens the life-cycle of steam generators and reduces the output of power plants. So KHNP(Korea Hydro and Nuclear Power), the only nuclear power utility in Korea, removes it periodically using a steam generator lancing system during the outage of plants for an overhaul. KEPRI(Korea Electric Power Research Institute) has developed lancing systems with high pressured water nozzle for steam generators of nuclear power plants since 2001. In this paper, the design of a partial inter-tube lancing system for model F type steam generators will be described. The system is actuated without a DC motor inner steam generators because the motors in a steam generator make a trouble from high intensity of radioactivity as a break down.

  • Optimization of seal geometries can reduce significantly the energetic losses in a hydraulic seal [1], especially for high head runner turbine. In the optimization process, a reliable prediction of the losses is needed and CFD is often used. This paper presents numerical experiments to determine an adequate CFD model for straight, labyrinth and stepped hydraulic seals used in Francis runners. The computation is performed with a finite volume commercial CFD code with a RANS low Reynolds turbulence model. As numerical computations in small radial clearances of hydraulic seals are not often encountered in the literature, the numerical results are validated with experimental data on straight seals and labyrinth seals. As the validation is satisfactory enough, geometrical optimization of hydraulic seals using CFD will be studied in future works.

  • In real world applications, the response of structures may be dependent on the rate of loading and thus can be affected by transient loading, especially when the rate of loading is significant. In such situations, the rate of loading may become a major issue to understand structures during earthquake excitation or under blast or high velocity impact. In some cases, the rate effect on structures under strong earthquake excitation cannot be ignored when attempting to understand inelastic behavior of structures. Many researchers developed the constitutive theories in cyclic plasticity and viscoplasticity. In this study, numerical simulation by cyclic visocoplasticity models is introduced and analyzed. Finally, the analytical results are compared with experimental results as a means to evaluate and verify the model.

  • A bumper comprises a bumper face, a bumper beam for distributing the load from the impacts applied to the bumper face and reinforcing the bumper, an absorber member interposed between the bumper face and the bumper beam, and a pair of bumper stays which secure the bumper beam to the vehicle body. A conventional bumper stay structure is assembled into several stamped parts, so several processes are needed and the structure is complicated. In this study the bumper stay is applied to the tubular hydroforming which is known to have several advantages such as the reduction of the number of the process and the part weight. The thickness distribution of the tube is mainly considered to evaluate the hydro-formability and the shape of the tube is determined.

  • This paper presents hydraulic model which can capture the hysteric damping force behavior of ER damper. A flow mode rue ER damper is manufactured, and its field-dependent damping forces are measured. Newly proposed hydraulic model which derived from physical hydro-mechanical parameters of ER damper are conventional Bingham model are investigated to represent the field-dependent damping force characteristics of ER damper. After principal parameters of two models are estimated from the measured damping forces data, the force vs velocity hysteresis cycles are then reconstructed. The results show that the proposed hydraulic model can capture the hysteresis behavior of ER damper accurately.

  • Last blades of low-pressure turbine in nuclear power plant are the highly damaged part and always suffered from different types of loadings leading to various stress components, stresses due to centrifugal force and steam flow loading. Especially, centrifugal stress generated by turbine rotation is one of the main problems and more significant than other stresses as they have the greatest effect on total stress. Therefore, this study was performed to obtain the important information for estimation model development of the blade centrifugal stress level and distribution.

  • Wall thinning of carbon steel pipe components due to Flow-Accelerated Corrosion (FAC) is one of the most serious threats to the integrity of steam cycle piping systems in Nuclear Power Plants (NPP). Since the mid-1990s, secondary side piping systems in Korean NPPs have experienced wall thinning, leakages and ruptures caused by FAC. Korea Electric power Research Institute (KEPRI) and Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co., LTD. (KHNP) have conducted a study to develop the methodology for systematic pipe management and established the Korean Thinned Pipe Management Program (TPMP). To effectively maintain the integrity of piping system, FAC engineer should understand the criterions of the structural integrity evaluation and the safety margin assessment for the thinned pipe component. This paper describes the technical items of TPMP, and shows the example of the integrity evaluation and safety margin assessment for three thinned pipe component of a NPP.

  • Reburning is an efficient combustion technology to reduce nitrogen oxide by injecting hydro-carbon fuel to the downstream of the main combustion. In this paper LPG has been used not only as main fuel but also as reburn fuel and air was used as an oxidizer with 15kW swirl burner. Experimental studies have been done to evaluate effect of reburning for NOx reduction. Also to examine the effect of the amount of burnout air for complete combustion by reburn fuel on NOx reduction, test was conducted by reducing the amount of burnout air. Computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulation was performed using the commercial CFD code FLUENT 6.3 to simulate experimental results and investigate the thermo-chemical characteristics. An evaluation of reaction models for swirl burner has been carried out for propane-air with two step finite-rate eddy-dissipation model in FLUENT.
