Parametric analyses for the design of a closed-loop passive containment cooling system

  • A design parameter study is presented for the closed-loop type passive containment cooling system (PCCS) which is equipped with two heat exchangers: one installed at the inside of the containment and the other submerged in the water pool at the outside of the containment. A GOTHIC code model for PCCS performance analyses was set up and the design parameters such as the heat exchanger sizes, locations, and water pool tank volumes were analyzed to investigate the feasibility of installing this type of PCCS in PWRs like OPR-1000 being operated in Korea. We identified the size of the circulation loop and heat exchangers as major design parameters affecting the performance of PCCS. The analyses showed that the heat exchangers in the inside of the containment would be more influential on the heat removal capability of PCCS than that installed in the water pool at the outside of the containment. Hence, it was recommended to down-size the heat exchangers in the water pool to optimize PCCS without compromising its performance. Based on the parametric study, it was demonstrated that a closed-loop type PCCS could be designed sufficiently compact for installation in the available space within the containment of PWRs like OPR-1000.

  • Myanmar's current power situation remains severely constrained despite being richly endowed in primary energy sources. With low levels of electrification, the demand for power is not adequately met. Cooperation in energy has been a major focus of future initiative for all developed and developing nations. If we want to solve climate change, and change our energy infrastructure, we need to be innovative and entrepreneurial in energy generation. This paper will help us in examining Bayesian MCMC Analysis for the parameters estimation among the arrival rates of disaster occurrences, firm's expected income-based electricity tariffs, and estimated R&D investment expenses in new energy industry. Focusing on Japan's electric power business, we would like to search the potential for innovative initiatives in new technological energy industry for the regional development and ecological sustainability in Myanmar.

  • 방사성 폐기물지하처분이나 열수 및 축열 에너지저장, 지열에너지 개발 등과 같은 대규모 지하공간 프로젝트들이 대두됨에 따라 역학, 수리 및 열적 거동을 동시에 고려한 연구가 필요하게 되었다. 열-수리-역학 상호작용 해석은 열로 교란되고 지하수로 포화된 암반내의 거동을 열 수리, 역학 3가지 지배방정식의 결합을 통해 구현하는 상당히 복잡한 수치 해석 기법 중의 하나이다. 본 연구에서는 기존의 Biot의 압밀이론에 기초한 수식화들을 이용하여 연속체 암반의 열-수리-역학적 상호작용을 모사할 수 있는 유한요소 프로그램을 개발하였다. 개발된 프로그램의 검증을 위해 등온과 비등온 조건하의 일차원 압밀모델에 대한 해석을 실시하여 해석해와 비교하였다. 이타원 압밀에 대한 변수해석을 통하여 포아송비나 수리적 이방성과 같은 인자들이 매체 거동에 미치는 영향을 조사하였다. 앞으로 본 프로그램에 개별체 절리 모델을 통합시켜 보다 일반적인 불연속 암반의 상호작용 거동 해석에 이용할 수 있을 것이다.

  • 본 연구에서는 TOUGH-FLAC 연동해석기법을 통해 단층의 수리역학적 거동을 평가할 수 있는 수치해석 모델을 제안하였다. 이는 국제공동연구 DECOVALEX-2019 Task B의 일환으로 수행되었으며, 불투수성 암반 내 유체 주입으로 인한 단층의 재활성을 예측하고 주변 암반의 수리역학적 안정성을 평가할 수 있는 해석모델을 개발하는 데에 그 목적이 있다. 본 연구에서는 TOUGH2 수리유동모델과 FLAC3D의 역학적 인터페이스 모델의 연동을 통해 단층의 역학적 거동을 보다 합리적으로 구현할 수 있는 해석기법을 제안하고, 벤치마크 해석과 스위스 Mont Terri 지하연구시설 현장시험에 적용하여 그 타당성과 유효성을 검증하였다. 개발된 해석 모델은 유체의 주입으로 인한 단층 내 압력 분포의 발달, 역학적 변형에 따른 수리간극의 변화, 변위와 응력 등 단층의 수리역학적 거동을 적절히 재현할 수 있는 것으로 나타났다.

IDENTIFICATION OF GENES EXPRESSED IN LOW-DOSE-RATE γ-IRRADIATED MOUSE WHOLE BRAIN

  • While high-dose ionizing radiation results in long term cellular cytotoxicity, chronic low-dose (<0.2 Gy) of X- or ${\gamma}$-ray irradiation can be beneficial to living organisms by inducing radiation hormesis, stimulating immune function, and adaptive responses. During chronic low-dose-rate radiation (LDR) exposure, whole body of mice is exposed to radiation, however, it remains unclear if LDR causes changes in gene expression of the whole brain. Therefore, we aim to investigate expressed genes (EGs) and signaling pathways specifically regulated by LDR-irradiation ($^{137}Cs$, a cumulative dose of 1.7 Gy for total 100 days) in the whole brain. Using microarray analysis of whole brain RNA extracts harvested from ICR and AKR/J mice after LDR-irradiation, we discovered that two mice strains displayed distinct gene regulation patterns upon LDR-irradiation. In ICR mice, genes involved in ion transport, transition metal ion transport, and developmental cell growth were turned on while, in AKR/J mice, genes involved in sensory perception, cognition, olfactory transduction, G-protein coupled receptor pathways, inflammatory response, proteolysis, and base excision repair were found to be affected by LDR. We validated LDR-sensitive EGs by qPCR and confirmed specific upregulation of S100a7a, Olfr624, and Gm4868 genes in AKR/J mice whole brain. Therefore, our data provide the first report of genetic changes regulated by LDR in the mouse whole brain, which may affect several aspects of brain function.

Effect of Hydro-meteorological and Surface Conditions on Variations in the Frequency of Asian Dust Events

  • The effects of hydro-meteorological and surface variables on the frequency of Asian dust events (FAE) were investigated using ground station and satellite-based data. Present weather codes 7, 8, and 9 derived from surface synoptic observations (SYNOP)were used for counting FAE. Surface wind speed (SWS), air temperature (Ta), relative humidity (RH), and precipitation were analyzed as hydro-meteorological variables for FAE. The Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), land surface temperature (LST), and snow cover fraction (SCF) were used to consider the effects of surface variables on FAE. The relationships between FAE and hydro-meteorological variables were analyzed using Z-score and empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analysis. Although all variables expressed the change of FAE, the degrees of expression were different. SWS, LST, and Ta (indices applicable when Z-score was < 0) explained about 63.01, 58.00, and 56.17% of the FAE,respectively. For NDVI, precipitation, and RH, Asian dust events occurred with a frequency of about 55.38, 67.37, and 62.87% when the Z-scores were > 0. EOF analysis for the FAE showed the seasonal cycle, change pattern, and surface influences related to dryness condition for the FAE. The intensity of SWS was the main cause for change of FAE, but surface variables such as LST, SCF, and NDVI also were expressed because wet surface conditions suppress FAE. These results demonstrate that not only SWS and precipitation, but also surface variables, are important and useful precursors for monitoring Asian dust events.

A STUDY ON ADSORPTION AND DESORPTION BEHAVIORS OF 14C FROM A MIXED BED RESIN

  • Spent resin waste containing a high concentration of $^{14}C$ radionuclide cannot be disposed of directly. A fundamental study on selective $^{14}C$ stripping, especially from the IRN-150 mixed bed resin, was carried out. In single ion-exchange equilibrium isotherm experiments, the ion adsorption capacity of the fresh resin for non-radioactive $HCO_3{^-}$ ion, as the chemical form of $^{14}C$, was evaluated as 11mg-C/g-resin. Adsorption affinity of anions to the resin was derived in order of $NO_3{^-}$ > $HCO_3{^-}{\geq}H_2PO_4{^-}$. Thus the competitive adsorption affinity of $NO_3{^-}$ ion in binary systems appeared far higher than that of $HCO_3{^-}$ or $H_2PO_4{^-}$, and the selective desorption of $HCO_3{^-}$ from the resin was very effective. On one hand, the affinity of $Co^{2+}$ and $Cs^+$ for the resin remained relatively higher than that of other cations in the same stripping solution. Desorption of $Cs^+$ was minimized when the summation of the metal ions in the spent resin and the other cations in solution was near saturation and the pH value was maintained above 4.5. Among the various solutions tested, from the view-point of the simple second waste process, $NH_4H_2PO_4$ solution was preferable for the stripping of $^{14}C$ from the spent resin.

  • We have studied the prearranged plan and the economy of a candidate site for the development of small hydro power. And also we have confirmed its economy by suggesting the technology of the unmanned operation and the selection of the water turbine generator which has a great efficiency. working rate and suitability to the topographical characteristics of various development sites, for example, irrigation reservoirs, water works pipes, sewage systems and cool ing water of a steam power stat ion. Besides we give more examples of the select ion of Francis, propeller turbine and induction generator which can achieve a maximum of power production at a minimum construction cost. With a water turbine which runs at the low head we are able to suggest many programs to boost a development of small hydro power more economically.
