  • Uptakes of N and P by Phragmites japonica Steudel. are determined in continuous flow tanks as a function of hydraulic retention time (HRT, days) and nutrient concentration (NC). Results show that the uptake was higher at shorter HRT and higher nutrient concentration, and the regression equations were estimated. Mean above ground biomass of Phragmites japonica in the middle reaches of Sagimak stream was 335.92 g/$m^2$, and estimated uptake by this vegetation were 7.31~20.15 NH$_4$-N, 31.15~95.84 NO$_3$-N, and 4.09~11.48 PO$_4$-P mg/$m^2$/day in Sagimak stream, respectively when HRT was 1~5 days. According to this study, it is concluded that Phragmites japonica Steudel. are suitable for water quality improvement of stream through nutrient uptake at short HRT and high concentration.

  • Quantity and composition of biogas from semi-continuous anaerobic digestion of straw were obtained experimentally in laboratory scale digesters fed with 1 liter of 5% straw-water mixture and maintained at 35$^{\circ}C$. Experiments were carried out for hydraulic retention time(HRT) of 8, 10 and 15days, respectively. The amount and composition of biogas produced were measured until steady-state was achieved for each run. The amount of biogas and methane percent go through a maximum and decrease continuously towards the steady-state after three times operation of hydraulic retention time(HRT). Methane gas production rates at steady-state increase with the increasing of HRT. Biogas production of 0.45 liter/day with 25% methane, 0.42 liter/day with 33.7% methane and 0.492 liter/day with 31.7% methane were obtained for 8, 10 and 15days of HRT, respectively. The high proportion of soluble carbohydrates present in straw makes the volatile fatty acids to build up within the digester causing a drop in pH that inhibits digestion. Regular control of pH is therefore necessary by adding alkalinity. Reductions in COD increase with increase in HRT. The stratification of plant material within the digester is different from that of manure, and modifications in design and operation of digesters may be necessary if they are fed with plant matter.

  • To evaluate the performance of a bipolar packed bed cell (BPBC) filled with granular aluminium, the experiments were carried out in two groups as batch and continuous processes. In a batch process, removal efficiency of total phosphate (T-P) was 88% in case of electrolytic treatment of phosphate solution, T-P 10 mg/L at 6 V during 3 h by BPBC filled with granular aluminium. In a continuous process, residual T-P concentration was about 2 mg/L in case of electrolytic treatment of phosphate solution, 10 mg/L at 6 V, HRT 3 h by BPBC filled with granular aluminium. Break-through point was observed after running for 120 h at hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 3 h.

  • In this study, a non-thermal plasma system was employed to simultaneously remove odorous compounds and organic sludge. The system consisted of two reactors; the first one was the non-thermal plasma reactor where ozone was produced by the plasma reaction and the ozone oxidized hydrogen sulfide, the model odorous compound, and then the ozone-laden gas stream was introduced to the second reactor where wasted sludge was disintegrated and solubilized by ozone oxidation. In this study, the gas retention time (GRT) and the hydraulic retention time (HRT) were changed in the two-reactor system, and the effects of GRT and HRT on reduction efficiencies of odor and sludge were determined. As the GRT increased, the ozone concentration increased resulting in an increasing efficiency of hydrogen sulfide removal. However, the overall ozone loading rate to the second sludge reactor was the same at any GRT, which resulted in an insignificant change in sludge reduction rate. When HRTs in the sludge reactor were 1, 2, 4 hours, the sludge reduction rates were approximately 30% during the four-hour operation, while the rate increased to 70% at the HRT of 6 hours. Nevertheless, at HRTs greater than 4 hours, the solubilization efficiency was not proportionally increased with increasing specific input energy, indicating that an appropriate sludge retention time needs to be applied to achieve effective solubilization efficiencies at a minimal power consumption for the non-thermal plasma reaction.

  • The partial lipid degradation with the saturation of double-bond at the acidogenesis stage is known to help subsequent methanogenesis during anaerobic digestion. Acidogenic reactions in an anaerobic sequencing batch reactor (ASBR) and a continuously stirred tank reactor (CSTR) were carried out to compare their performances. A mixture of two unsaturated (oleate and linoleate) and two saturated (palmitate and stearate) long-chain fatty acids (LCFAs) was used as a model substrate. Biomass retention in the ASBR contributed to the enhanced performance at hydraulic retention time (HRT) below 15 hr. Biomass retention in the ASBR contributed to the enhanced performance compared to CSTR even at shorter HRT. ASBR would be a proper reactor configuration for the acidogenesis of lipid-containing wastewater.

  • In this study, degradation of carbohydrates and composition of fermentative products were investigated in semi-continuous acid fermenter varying hydraulic retention time (HRT). Rice soup was used as a sole substrate for the acid fermentation. Solubilization efficiency of the substrate was higher than 70% for all HRT, however the gas conversion was ignorable implying that most of organic contents in the influent remained in the form of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) and ethanol after acid fermentation. The VFAs were the predominant product and the VFAs conversion increased as the HRT decreased. The VFAs conversion reached the maximum value at 12 hr HRT accounting for 70% of the influent COD. Similar to VFAs, ethanol conversion was increased with the decrease of HRT and the maximum ethanol conversion efficiency was 8% at the HRT of 12 hr. Composition of VFAs was markedly dependent on HRT. As HRT increased, the composition of acetic acid was increased as a product of acetogenesis from butyrate, valerate and ethanol. This study demonstrated that HRT affected acid fermentation of a carbohydrate containing organic wastes producing VFAs and ethanol which could be effectively used to compensate the lack of carbon in wastewater for biological nutrient removal.

  • A pilot-scale biological aerated filter (BAF) was operated with an anaerobic, anoxic and oxic zone at $23{\pm}1^{\circ}C$. The influent sCOD and total nitrogen concentrations in the feedwater were approximately 250 mg/L and 35 mg N/L, respectively. sCOD removal at optimum hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 3 hours with recirculation rates of 100, 200 and 300% in the column was more than 96%. Total nitrogen removal was consistently above 80% for 4 and 6 hours HRT at 300% recirculation. For 3 hours HRT and 300% recirculation, total nitrogen removal was approximately 79%. Based on fitting results, the kinetic parameter values on nitrification and denitrification show that as recirculation rates increased, the rate of ammonia and nitrate transformation increased. The ammonium loading rates for maximum ammonium removed were 0.15 and 0.19 kg $NH_3$-N/$m^3$-day for 100% and 200% recirculation, respectively. The experimental results demonstrated that the BAF can be operated at an HRT of 3 hours with 200 - 300% recirculation rates with more than 96 % removal of sCOD and ammonium, and at least 75% removal of total nitrogen.

  • Hydraulic dead-zone and particle removal efficiency in the base frame of a constructed wetland was evaluated with computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The fraction of hydraulic dead-zone was estimated to be 1.2-2.1 % (v/v) and it was attributed to the artificial islands developed in the constructed wetland. Solids deposition rate could be increased with higher hydraulic retention time (HRT, ranged from 2.2 to 4.2 hr) of the wetland and larger particle size (ranged from 10 to $50{\mu}m$) in the influent. Experimental results showed that the volume concentration of the particles smaller than $10{\mu}m$ in diameter was varied from $1.99{\times}10^3{\mu}m^3/ml$ (HRT 12.8 hr) to $3.92{\times}10^3{\mu}m^3/ml$(HRT 2.2 hr) in the influent of the constructed wetland. With the effluent volume concentration data, removal efficiency of those particles was calculated to be 71.2 and 24.7 % when the HRT was 12.8 and 2.2 hr, respectively. Similar trend with the HRT variation could be identified with CFD analysis.

  • This study presents the effect of hydraulic retention time (HRT) on the characteristics of emission of three major greenhouse gases (GHGs) including $CH_4$, $CO_2$ and $N_2O$ during operation of a sequencing batch reactor for aerobic oxidation of methane with denitrification (AeOM-D SBR). Dissolved $N_2O$ concentration increased, leveled-off and slightly decreased as the HRT increased from 0.25 to 1d. Concentration of the dissolved $N_2O$ was higher at the shorter HRT, which was highly associated with the lowered C/N ratio. A longer HRT resulted in a higher C/N ratio with a sufficient carbon source produced by methanotrophs via methane oxidation, which provided a favorable condition for reducing $N_2O$ formation. With a less formation of the dissolved $N_2O$, $N_2O$ emission rate was lower at a longer HRT condition due to the lower C/N ratio. Opposite to the $N_2O$ emission, emission rates of $CH_4$ and $CO_2$ were higher at a longer HRT. Longer HRT resulted in the greater total GHGs emission as $CO_2$ equivalent which was doubled when the HRT increased from 0.5d to 1.0 d. Contribution of $CH_4$ onto the total GHGs emission was most dominant accounting for 98 - 99% compared to that of $N_2O$ (< 2%).

  • This study was initiated to evaluate the effect of HRT(hydraulic retention time) on removal efficiencies of organic matter (C), nitrogen(N) and phosphorus(P) in municipal wastewater for suspenced-growth processes(MLE; Modified Ludzack-Ettinger) and hybrid process(Modified-Dephanox). M-Dephanox process was designed to improve the performance of Dephanox process on denitrification efficiency. As the results, removal efficiencies of C, N and P in M-Dephanox process, which is hybrid process, were higher than those in MLE, which is suspended-growth process. Especially, nitrification inhibition of MLE was observed more severely than M-Dephanox as hydraulic retention time was reduced from 6 hr to 3.5 hr. Nitrification in nitrification reactors on M-Dephanox, at short HRT, was so excellent that ammonia nitrogen removal efficiency in nitrification reactors of M-Dephanox was about 92% at 1.59 hr of HRT of nitrification reactors, however, nitrification in nitrification reactors on M-Dephanox was affected severely by organic matter entering to nitrification reactors from downstream settler. It was observed that reducing of HRT in whole process resulted from reducing of HRT in nitrification reactors on M-Dephanox.
