  • The reology and several physical properties of cements are studied by varying the different mineral composition and particle size distribution(PSD) of cements with closed circuit ball mill for high workability, low heat of hydration, and high strength. In this study, we found that the workability of concretes is related to the viscosity of cement, and affects to strength. Here, this workability is affected by mineral composition (C3A) and the PSD. Especially, rosin-rammer index and 44${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ residue in the PSD of cements are affected to water demand, casting property, slump loss, strength of cements. From the above results, the conditions of cement for high workability, low heat of hydration and high strength are to use low C3A clinker, 5-10% slag addition, and to grind cement below 0.7 rosin-rammer index, above 3.5-4.5% 44 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ residue, 4000$\pm$100 $\textrm{cm}^2$/g blaine. Such cements are, therefore, supurior to super low heat cement and slag-blended cement in comparing the physical properties of strength, slump, slump-flow, adiabetic temperature, etc.

  • Recently, the interest and demand for large-scale buildings and skyscrapers have been on the rise, and the performance of concrete is an area of high priority. Securing 'mass concrete and high strength concrete' is very important as a key construction technology. For high strength concrete, the high heat of hydration takes place inside the concrete because of the vitality of hydration in cement due to the large amount of powder, and leads to problems such as an increase of thermal stress due to the temperature difference with the outside, which results in cracks and slump loss. For this reason, measures to solve these problems are needed. This study aims to reduce the hydration heat of high strength concrete to control the hydration heat of mass concrete and high strength concrete, by replacing the type of admixture, The purpose of this study is to control the hydration heat of high strength concrete and mass concrete. Our idea for this purpose is to apply not only the types and contents of admixture but also incorporation mixing water to ice-flake. As a result of the test, the use of blast furnace slag and fly ash as admixture, and the use of ice-flake as mixing water can improve the liquidity of concrete and reduce slump loss. Significantly dropping the maximum temperature will contribute greatly to reducing cracks due to hydration heat in mass concrete and high strength concrete, and improve quality.

  • When calcium sulfoaluminate-based expansive cement was hydrated, ettringite and monosulfate were mainly formed. The crack of hardened cement was prevented by compensating drying shrinkage due to formation of the above hydrates. In order to study the hydration properties of calcium sulfoaluminate-based expanding cement, 3CaOㆍ3Al$_2$O$_3$ㆍCaSO$_4$(C$_4$A$_3$S) was prepared by chemical synthesis, and then the hydration of $C_4$A$_3$S-Ca(OH)$_2$-CaSO$_4$.$2H_2O$-C$_3$A system_was characterized. Good $C_4$A$_3$S phase was prepared at $1300^{\circ}C$ by chemical synthesis, and the main hydration product of $C_4$A$_3$S-Ca(OH)$_2$-CaSO$_4$.2$H_2O$ system was ettringite. In the case of hydration $C_4$A$_3$S-Ca(OH)$_2$-CaSO$_4$ㆍ 2$H_2O$-C$_3$A system, ettringite was formed in the early period and it was transformed into monosulfate while consumed gypsum.

  • This study comparatively analyzed the properties of hydration reaction and strength development of four types of pond ash(PA) and fly ash(FA), aiming for the effective use of PA. The PA whose chlorine content was highest due to the seawater movement method had a faster setting time, higher cumulative heat, and greater initial strength development than those of FA due to the acceleration of the cement hydration reaction. However, the activity factor increase rate decreased after seven days of curing due to the rapid generation of early hydrates. The PA that contained impurities, such as a large amount of unburned carbon, had a delayed setting time due to the lower hydration reaction. Moreover, the strength was degraded in all curing ages. The PA whose chlorine content was lower due to the freshwater movement method and the amorphous content exhibited similar hydration reactivity and strength development characteristics compared to that of FA. The thermogravimetric analysis results verified that it had a similar level of Ca(OH)2 consumption and pozzolanic reactivity with that of FA. Conclusively, it is necessary to expand the application of the freshwater movement method and manage the ignition loss to raise PA's usability.

  • To investigate the mechanical properties of Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) Beads Stabilized Lightweight Soil (EBSLS), Laboratory studies were conducted. Totally 20 sets of specimens according to the complete test design were prepared and tested with unconfined compressive test and consolidated drained triaxial test. Results showed that dry density of EBSLS ($0.67-1.62g/cm^3$) decreases dramatically with the increase of EPS beads volumetric content, while increase slightly with the increase of cement content. Unconfined compressive strength (10-2580 kPa) increases dramatically in parabolic relationship with the increase of cement content, while decreases with the increase of EPS beads volumetric content in hyperbolic relationship. Cohesion (31.1-257.5 kPa) increases with the increase of cement content because it is mainly caused by the bonding function of hydration products of cement. The more EPS beads volumetric content is, the less dramatically the increase is, which is a result of the cohesion between hydration products of cement and EPS beads is less than that between hydration products of cement and sand particles. Friction angle ($14.92-47.42^{\circ}$) decreases with the increase of EPS beads volumetric content, which is caused by the smoother surfaces of EPS beads than sand grains. The stress strain curves of EBSLS tend to be more softening with the increase of EPS beads content or the decrease of cement content. The shear contraction of EBSLS increases with the increase of $c_e$ or the decrease of $c_c$. The results provided quantitative relationships between physico-mechanical properties of EBSLS and material proportion, and design process for engineering application of EBSLS.

  • Palm Oil Fuel Ash(POFA) has been widely used to replace Portland cement to enhance the mechanical properties and durability of concrete. However, it reduces the workability of concrete due to the high content of unburnt carbon and its angular shape requiring the usage of superplasticizer to ensure a proper flowability. In this study, effects of different types and dosage of superplasticizer on the early mechanical and hydration properties of cement paste containing micro-POFA were evaluated using mini-slump test, early compressive strength, TGA, XRD, and SEM. The results indicated that the flowability of cement paste containing micro-POFA reduced as the replacement ratio of micro-POFA increased. As the dosage of superplasticizer increased, the flowability was also increased. In addition, the usage of superplasticizer reduced the early compressive strength, and the strength decreased with an increase in the dosage of superplasticizer. It was confirmed that superplasticizer hindered the formation of C-S-H leading to a relative increase in the formation of Ca(OH)2.

  • Geomembrane, compacted clay liner, and geosynthetic clay liner (GCL) are widely used to prevent leachate from leaking to adjacent geo-environment at a municipal solid waste (MSW) landfill. Interface shear strength between GCL and geomembrane installed at a landfill side slope is important properties for the safe design of side liner or final cover systems. The interface shear strength between two geosynthetics was estimated by a large direct shear test in this study. The shear strength was evaluated by the Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion. The effects of normal stress, hydration or dry condition, and a hydration method were investigated. The test results show that the interface shear strength and shear behavior varied depending up on the level of normal stress, the type of geosynthetic combinations, and a hydration method. When GCLs were sheared after being hydrated under 6kPa loading, the results were consistent with those published by other researchers. Summaries of friction angles, normal stress and hydration condition is presented. These friction angles could be used as a reference value at a site where similar geosynthetics are installed.

  • This paper investigates the corrosion inhibition and the reduction of hydration heat properties of Ground Granulated Blast-Furnace Slag (GGBFS) added concrete. Since the massive civil structure is vulnerable to the thermal crack by hydration. adiabatic temperature rising tests were performed for water-binder ratios from 43.2% to 47.3%, while replacing 15% to 50% of cement with GGBFS of equal weight. Then, the corrosion protection performance was evaluated using cylindrical specimens embedded with steel reinforcement according to the combination of 3 W/B ratios and 2 levels of chloride ion quantity. The corrosion area of the embedded steel ban was determined using the high pressure steam curing method specified in KS F 2561. The test results showed that the replacement of GGBFS was effective in reducing the hydration heat. The corrosion area of the embedded steel ban decreased as the replacement of GGBFS increased. However, the corrosion area of the steel bar was proportional to the autoclave cycle and the chloride ion quantity. Among the tested specimens, compressive strength, reduction of hydration heat, and corrosion inhibition performance were excellent when 50% of cement was replaced with GGBFS of equal weight.

  • The purpose of this study is to establish experimental canine skin barrier disruption model in dog. The study was designed to investigate the predictive properties of acetone damage using as effect parameters transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and stratum corneum (SC) hydration. To compare the structures of SC intercellular lipids in normal and acetone damaged skin, TEM observations were performed. Six clinically normal, male Beagles without dermatological problems were chosen for this study. Acetone damage was performed at 48hrs after clipping. Efficacy measurements for TEWL and skin hydration were performed before ($t_1$) and after ($t_2$) damage in a temperature- and humidity-controlled room ($2{0\sim}22^{\circ}C$, 50-60%). TEWL and SC hydration values were decreased in the acetone damaged model compared with non damaged skin. In TEM observation of acetone damaged sample, the intercellular lipid lamellae exhibit abnormal and incomplete structure compared with those of normal skin. It seems that acetone damage would be one of canine skin epidermal barrier disruption model for the study of canine atopic dermatitis (AD) as well as dry skin in veterinary dermatology research.

  • The test result of mat concrete applying both hydration heat difference and insulation curing method on new construction of Cheongju university educational building are summarized as following. Both fresh concrete and compressive strength properties were satisfied In aimed value. Setting time of concrete incorporating 15% of fly ash(FA) retarded 1.2 hour than control concrete. Temperature history of mali concrete indicated that the highest temperature of center was exhibited at $126^{\circ}C$ after 51 hours while the highest temperature of upper section was $10.6^{\circ}C$ after 46 hours. Temperature Difference between center and surface was managed at less than $6^{\circ}C$ during whole curing period. In addition the temperature of upper section secured more than $3.3^{\circ}C$ while the temperature of outside was indicated at less than $-10^{\circ}C$. Maturity by parts of construction secured more than $30^{\circ}C$ DD higher than outside at 3 days. The more number of times, applying insulation curing method by double bubble sheets, increased, the higher economic effect was secured. Overall it was clear that applying both double bubble sheets and hydration heat difference method on this new construction can resist hydration heat crack, early frost demage and strength decrease. It also significantly contributed quality improvement of cold weather concreting
