This study is intended to investigate the engineering properties of concrete, in which cement and fine aggregate are replaced with cement kiln dust(CKD), such as the properties of fresh concrete and hardened concrete and hydration heat history, for effective using method of CKD, a by-product produced in the process of making cement. According to the results, as the replacing ratio of CKD increases, slump and air content of concrete decreases remarkably due to an increase of viscosity and filling of the pores. As the properties of setting, initial and final setting time are shortened with an increase of the replacing ratio of CKD, and as the replacement of CKD for fine aggregate increases, setting time is shortened more greatly. Compressive strength increases due to filling of the pores and reduction of air content in comparison with plain concrete. When the replacement ratio of CKD for cement is 10% and 15%, peak temperature of hydration heat lowers slightly, but it goes up in the case of replacement of CKD for fine aggregate. Also, when cement and fine aggregate is replaced with CKD by 2.5% and 7.5% respectively(1C3S) in the case of replacement of CKD for cement and fine aggregate, it is highest.
Once a structure fabricated with mass concrete is in a form of wall such as retaining wall, side walls of a concrete caisson and so on, cracks induced by hydration heat have been known to be governed by exterior restraints which are mainly related to the boundary conditions of the structure. However, it is thought that the degree of restraints can be alleviated considerably only if a lift height of concrete placement or a panel size of the wall is selected properly before construction. As a way of minimizing thermal cracking commonly observed in massive wall-typed structure, this study aimed at evaluating effects of geometrical configuration on the temperature rise and thermal stress through parametric study. Evaluation of the effect was also performed for cement types using anti-sulphate cement, blast furnace slag cement and cement blended with two mineral admixture and one ordinary Portland Cement. so called ternary blended cement. As a result of analytical study, it was found that a lift height of concrete placement is the most important factor in controlling thermal cracking in massive wall, and the increase of a lift height is not always positive to the crack occurrence as not expected.
The carbon dioxide($CO_2$) released while producing building materials is substantial and has been targeted as a leading contributor to global climate change. One of the most typical method to reducing $CO_2$ for building materials is the addition of slag and fly ash, like pozzolan material, while another method is reducing $CO_2$ production by carbon negative cement development. The MgO-based cement was from the low-temperature calcination of magnesite required less energy and emitted less $CO_2$ than the manufacturing of Portland cements. It is also believed that adding reactive MgO to Portland-pozzolan cements could improve their performance and also increase their capacity to absorb atmospheric $CO_2$. In this study, the basic research for magnesia cement using $MgCO_3$ and magnesium silicate ore (serpentine) as main starting materials, as well as silica fume, fly ash and blast furnace slag for the mineral admixture, were carried out for industrial waste material recycling. In order to increase the hydration activity, $MgCl_2$ was also added. To improve hydration activity, $MgCO_3$ and serpentinite were fired at $700^{\circ}C$ and autoclave treatment was conducted. In the case of $MgCO_3$ as starting material, hydration activity was the highest at firing temperature of $700^{\circ}C$. This $MgCO_3$ was completely transferred to MgO after firing. This occurred after the hydration reaction with water MgO was transferred completely to $Mg(OH)_2$ as a hydration product. In the case of using only $MgCO_3$, the compressive strength was 3.5MPa at 28 days. The addition of silica fume enhanced compressive strength to 5.5 MPa. In the composition of $MgCO_3$-serpentine, the addition of pozzolanic materials such as silica fume increased the compression strength. In particular, the addition of $MgCl_2$ compressive strength was increased to 80 MPa.
Portland cement and sodium silicate are widely used as the main components of the injection, which are used to prevent flow and improve ground condition. The main problem of the injection material is the leaching of the sodium hydroxite and silicate due to the limited reaction with the cement. This paper studies the effect of cement hydration retarder on the compressive strength of the sodium silicate - cement gel. A series of tests, including digital-type testing machine, X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscope are performed. Results clearly demonstrate that the sodium tripolyphosphate, which is the cement hydration retarder in the test, significantly improves the initial strength of the homogel.
In order to secure the effective high early age strength of the concrete, the study was carried out with a goal of functional improvement of cement. This study was carried out as a follow up for the previous study, which analyzed the high early age strength and durability of concrete mixed with fine particle cement (FC) during cement production. The experimental results showed that the target range for each mix was satisfied at fresh state of concrete. Also, when mixed with fine particles cement, the setting time improved. Additionally, compressive strength and heat of hydration increased and remained same, respectively. Especially, the durability remained same even when mixed with fine particle cement.
Cement-bonded particleboard is being used as outdoor siding material all over the world, because this composite particularly bears a light weight, high resistance against fire, decay, and crack by cyclic freezing and thawing, anti-shock property, and strength enhancement. Construction systems are currently changing into a frame-building style and wooden houses are being constructed with prefabrication type. Therefore, they require a more durability at outdoor-exposed sides. In this study, the cement hydration property for Korean pine particle, Japanese larch particle and face- and middle layer particles (designated as PB particle below) used in Korean particleboard-manufacturing company was investigated, and the rapid manufacturing characteristics of cement-bonded particleboard by supercritical $CO_2$ curing was evaluated. Korean pine flour showed a good hydration property, however, larch flour showed a bad one. PB particle had a better hydration property than larch flour. The addition of $Na_2SiO_3$ indicated a negative effect on hydration, however, $MgCl_2$ had a positive one. Curing by supercritical $CO_2$ fluid gave a conspicuous enhancement in the performances of cement-bonded particleboards compared to conventional curing. $MgCl_2$ 3%-added PB particle had the highest properties, and $MgCl_2$ 1%-added Korean pine particle had the second class with the conditions of cement/wood ratio of 2.7, a small fraction-screened particle and supercritical curing. On the contrary, the composition of non-hammermilled or large fraction-screened particle at cement/wood ratio of 2.2 was poorer. Also, the feasibility for actual use of 3%-added, small PB particle-screened fraction was greatest of all the conventional curing treatments. Relative superiority of supercritical curing vs. conventional curing at dimensional stability was not so apparent as in strength properties. Through the thermogravimetric analysis, it was ascertained that the peak of a component $CaCO_3$ was highest, and the two weak peaks of calcium silicate hydrate and ettringite and $Ca(OH)_2$ were present in supercritical treatment. Accordingly, it was inferred that the increased formation of carbonates in board contributes to strength enhancement.
In this paper, the applicability of Hwangtoh, as an alternative of cement paste, is investigated for the solution of internal heat and shrinkage caused by the hydration of cement paste. Several small-sized specimens of Hwangtoh and ordinary portland concrete (OPC) were compared as to compressive strength, heat of hydration, and shrinkage strain. Moreover, the applicability to the construction structures was reviewed through the test of large-size specimens. The 28-day compressive strength of Hwangtoh concrete (HBC), ranged 18 to 33 MPa, can reach that of OPC. Not only the maximun internal temperature of HBC was read about 1/4 of OPC as it is cured, but also its shrinkage decreased more than the OPC did. Therefore, Hwangtoh binder is more favorable than cement binder in terms of its hydration heat and shrinkage under the construction of concrete.

In this study, we conducted the kinetic hydration modeling of OPC and the final product according to the substitution ratio of GGBS by using the geochemical code, GEMS, in order to calculate the thermodynamic equilibrium. The thermodynamic data was used by GEMS's 3rd party database, Cemdata18, and the cement hydration model, the Parrot & Killoh model was applied to simulate the hydration process. In OPC modeling, ion concentration of pore solution and hydration products by mass and volume were observed according to time. In the GGBS modeling, as the substitution rate increases, the amount of C-S-H, which contributes the long-term strength, increases, but the amount of Portlandite decreases, which leads to carbonation and steel corrosion. Therefore, it is necessary to establish prevention of some deterioration.
In order to clarify the mechanism of the hydration of supersulphated slag cement, the experiments of suspension hydration were performed in the mixtures of slag+CaSO4+water or NaOH solutions with a liquid/solid ratio of 10. The liquid and solid phase of the suspension was chemically analysed and discussed. In the slag-$CaSO_4$--NaOH system, $Al_2O_3$ was dissolved under high pH condition, and the ettringite was formed by a reaction of $CaSO_4$ and $Al_2O_3$ released in the solution. As hydration progressed, ettringite coated the surface of unhydrated slag grains and inhibited the hydration reaction of slag. $CaSO_4$ was not only an activator for slag hydration, but a reactant in the hydration.

In this research, it used cement powder and reduction slag, which generates high hydration heat in hydration reaction without heat cure below $-5^{\circ}C$ degree. Purpose of final research is preventing freezing and thawing by making the compressive strength 5MPa in 3days below zero temperature due to own heat of concrete. and it is the result of physical characteristic and thermal property evaluation of reduction slag. Because reduction slag generates high hydration heat, compressive strength development is excellent. By generating highly hydration heat by $C_{12}A_7$ and $C_3A$ in reduction slag, compressive strength is developed in low temperature. In case of displacing only reduction slag without $SO_3$, it is indicated that quick-setting occurs by shortage of $SO_3$. For preventing quick-setting, gypsum is used essentially. According to this research result, in case of using reduction slag and gypsum as a ternary system, compressive strength developed 5MPa in 3 days below zero temperature. It is identified to prevent early frost damage of concrete below zero temperature.
