  • In this study, the effect of superplasticizers on the dispersibility and hydration properties of cement with silica fume were investigated. Superplasticizers are used Naphthalene type, Ligno-sulfate type and polycarboxylate type. Compared with plastic viscosity of cement paste without superplasticizers(Plain), plastic viscosity of cement paste with superplasticizers are reduced and yield stress of cement pastes with each superplasticizer is increased rather than Plain. And then, plastic viscosity of cement paste with Naphthalene type superplasticizer was the least of all types. Compared with other two types, setting and hydration of cement paste with Polycarboxylate type(PC) superplasticizer is very fast. At compressive strength after 3-day, PC is higher than other two types, But, compressive strength of after 7-day and 28-day, PC is smaller than other two types.

  • In order to solve the problem of low early-age compressive strength of high volume fly ash concrete. This paper studies the effect of 2% sodium sulfate (Na2SO4) as a chemical activator on the paste with 40% fly ash content and a water-binder ratio of 0.30. The results indicate that the addition of Na2SO4 can effectively improve the early-age compressive strength of the fly ash-cement system, and the strength improvement rate on the first day reached nearly 70%. In addition, calorimetric analysis reveals that the incorporation of Na2SO4 promotes the early hydration of cement and fly ash, increases the cumulative hydration heat and delays the heat peak of the aluminum phase.

  • This dissertation is focused on the study over the improvement for the early strength of belite-rich cement(BRC). For this purpose, the initial hydration behaviors according to addition of different calcium sulfate types were evaluated. From the observations by XRD, DSC and SEM, the BRC II and III with the addition of natural anhydrate and flue gas desulphurization(FGD) gypsum, respectively, formed much ettringite after 7 days more than the BRC I with the addition of chemical gypsum. The compressive strength of the BRC II and III developed outstandingly due to the formation of calcium aluminate hydrate within pores of hardened BRC paste. Especially, in the case of BRC III adding FGD with low impurities, the early as well as long term compressive strengths were shown very high, compared with other specimens.

  • In the course of cement hydration it was found that the addition of polyvinyl alcohol(contracted as PVA. here after) only in the cement paste could more influence on the set-retardation the depression of heat evol-ution rate than that of montmorillonit only or PVA-montmorillonie intercalation complex (PMIC) due to the effective adsorption of PVA on cement particles. The improved mechanical strength by addition of montmorillonite and PMIC was observed remarkably up to 0.05wt% due to the decrease of macro-pores caused by lowed viscosity or the acceleration of hydration reaction.

  • PC-type copolymers were synthesized using MPEG(Polyethylene glycol methyl ether methacrylate, Mn=2080) to different mole ratios of mono-carboxylic acid(AA : Acylic acid). The mole ratios of AA were 2, 3, 4. To investigate effects of PC-type co-polymers on the hydration of cement, experiments involving FT-IR, XRD, SEM have been analysed with cement paste specimens to 1, 3, 28 day. The hydration reaction rate of cement paste was slightly delayed at 1 day, due to increase in molar ratio of [AA] / [MPEG], it was recovered in the days after.

  • We tested the limestone powder as a filler powder for the effective use of slag cement. Hydration process were investigated by measuring the thermal differential analysis(DTA), compressive strength, XRD patterns, calorimeter of slag cement-limestone powder paste prepared by mixing limestone powder-slag cement. The results obtained in this study, there were no significant difference between the cases of adding up to 5% limestone powder, but the reaction time was accelerated. Also the compressive strength was increased for adding up to 5% limestone powder. The min hydrated paste products were Ca(OH)2 and calcium silicate hydrates. In the case of mixed limestone powder peak appear tricalcium carboaluminate hydrate in the sample of 7 days hydration.

  • Hydration of granulated blastfurnace slag-gypsum-$C_4A_3\bar{S}$ clinker/modified converter slag clinker was investigated to develop the cement of slag-gypsum system. In the hydration of granulated slag-gypsum-$C_4A_3\bar{S}$ system clinker, the hydrates such as ettringite, CSH gel and $AH_3$ gel were formed, and the strength of hardened body would be increased by forming compact microstructure. The modified converter slag clinker which contains alite and calcium aluminate was synthesized, and the hydration reactivity of the cement from this clinker, gypsum and granulated slag is similar to usual portland cement, and the hydrates were mainly CSH, ettringite, and $Ca(OH)_2$.

  • The results showed that the addition of VAE polymer strongly reduces the $Ca(OH)_2$ formation, being this result attributed to reduce degree of cement hydration caused by different ion elution amount of polymer modified cement pastes and interaction between acetate anion from the partial hydrolysis of co-polymer and Ca$^{2+}$ion from OPC hydration.

  • This study is conducted to investigate the effect of phase change materials (PCM) on hydration heat and strength characteristics of cement mortar. Two types of Barium and Strontium-based PCMs were used in this study and the addition ratio of each PCM to the cement mortar ranged from 1% to 5% by cement weight. Flow test, semi-adiabatic temperature rise test, compressive strength and flexural strength test were carried out to examine the PCM effect on heat and mechanical properties of cement mortar. Test results indicated that PCMs used in this study were effective to control hydration heat of cement mortar, and Barium-based PCM slightly reduce flow value. The compressive and flexural strength of cement mortar with PCM decreased with increasing the adding mount of PCM. The prediction model for compressive strength of cement mortar with different addition levels of PCMs are suggested in this study.

  • In this study, fundamental properties of cement were reviewed to apply high fineness cement at low temperature environment. The classified high fineness cement has large proportion of particles below $10{\mu}m$ which affects early hydration: an overall reaction of cement hydration faster. As a result of using high fineness cement, setting time of concrete was reduced and compressive strength was higher than OPC at all ages. Especially, compressive strength was more than double its value compared with OPC after three days curing in low temperature. Faster reaction and higher heat of hydration was verified by calorimetry early and maximum heat of hydration was analyzed by adiabatic temperature raising test. The analysis of this study confirmed that high fineness cement can be suitable to be used in low temperature environment.
