Study of Radiation Mapping System for Water Contamination in Water System (방사능 수치 오염 지도 작성을 위한 방사선 계측 시스템 연구)

  • As nuclear industry has been developed, a various types of radiological contamination has occurred. After 9.11 terror in U.S.A., it has been concerned that terrorists' active area has been enlarged to use nuclear or radioactive substance. Recently, the most powerful earth-quake stroke, which triggered a massive tsunami in Japan and then Fukushima nuclear power plant reactor has suffered from a serious accident in history. The Fukushima reactor accident has occurred an anxiety of radiation leaks and about 170,000 people have been evacuated from the accidental area near the nuclear power plant. For these reasons, a social chaos can be occurred if radiological contamination occurs to the supply system for the drinking water. As such, the establishment of the radiation monitoring system for the city main water system is compelling for the national security. In this study, a feasibility test of radiation monitoring system which consists of unified hybrid-type radiation detectors was experimented for multi detection system by using gamma-ray imaging. The hybrid-type radiation sensors were fabricated with CsI(Tl) scintillators and photodiodes. A preamplifier and amplifier was also fabricated and assembled with the sensor in the shielding case. For the preliminary test of detection of radiological contamination in the river, multi CsI(Tl)-PIN photodiode radiation detectors and $^{137}Cs$ gamma-ray source were used. The DAQ was done by Linux based ROOT program and NI DAQ system with Labview program. The simulated contamination was assumed to be occurred at Gapcheon river in Daejeon city. Multi CsI(Tl)-PIN photodiode radiation detectors were positioned at the Gapcheon river side. Assuming that the radiological contaminations flows in the river the $^{137}Cs$ gamma-ray source has been moved and then, the contamination region was reconstructed.

  • Action recognition is an essential task in computer vision due to the variety of prospective applications, such as security surveillance, machine learning, and human-computer interaction. The availability of more video data than ever before and the lofty performance of deep convolutional neural networks also make it essential for action recognition in video. Unfortunately, limited crafted video features and the scarcity of benchmark datasets make it challenging to address the multi-person action recognition task in video data. In this work, we propose a deep convolutional neural network-based Effective Hybrid Learning (EHL) framework for two-person interaction classification in video data. Our approach exploits a pre-trained network model (the VGG16 from the University of Oxford Visual Geometry Group) and extends the Faster R-CNN (region-based convolutional neural network a state-of-the-art detector for image classification). We broaden a semi-supervised learning method combined with an active learning method to improve overall performance. Numerous types of two-person interactions exist in the real world, which makes this a challenging task. In our experiment, we consider a limited number of actions, such as hugging, fighting, linking arms, talking, and kidnapping in two environment such simple and complex. We show that our trained model with an active semi-supervised learning architecture gradually improves the performance. In a simple environment using an Intelligent Technology Laboratory (ITLab) dataset from Inha University, performance increased to 95.6% accuracy, and in a complex environment, performance reached 81% accuracy. Our method reduces data-labeling time, compared to supervised learning methods, for the ITLab dataset. We also conduct extensive experiment on Human Action Recognition benchmarks such as UT-Interaction dataset, HMDB51 dataset and obtain better performance than state-of-the-art approaches.

  • Sign language is a natural, visually oriented and non-verbal communication channel between people that facilitates communication through facial/bodily expressions, postures and a set of gestures. It is basically used for communication with people who are deaf or hard of hearing. In order to understand such communication quickly and accurately, the design of a successful sign language translation system is considered in this paper. The proposed system includes object detection and classification stages. Firstly, Single Shot Multi Box Detection (SSD) architecture is utilized for hand detection, then a deep learning structure based on the Inception v3 plus Support Vector Machine (SVM) that combines feature extraction and classification stages is proposed to constructively translate the detected hand gestures. A sign language fingerspelling dataset is used for the design of the proposed model. The obtained results and comparative analysis demonstrate the efficiency of using the proposed hybrid structure in sign language translation.

Characterization of Cell Growth and Camptothecin Production in Cell Cultures of Camptotheca acuminata

  • Studies were made to elucidate the cell growth and the production of camptothecin and its derivatives in cell cultures of Camptotheca acuminata. High resolution HPLC chromatograms to analyze camptothecin and 10-hydroxycamptothecin in lactone and carboxylate forms were obtained with a fluorescence detector. Calli inductions were optimized with the young stem of explant on Schenk and Hildebrandt (SH) medium supplemented with 5 mg/l $\alpha$-naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA), 0.2 mg/l 6-benzylamino purine (BAP), 2.0% sucrose, and 0.5% agar. The hybrid medium, a mixture of SH and Murashige and Skoog (MS) salts, was developed for homogeneous suspension cultures without large cell aggregates. The optimum phytohormone concentrations for successful suspension cultures were 1.0mg/l of 2,4-D and 0.5 mg/l of kinetin. The highest growth in suspension cultures was observed when 49.7% (w/w) of the cells was composed of small aggregates which were below 0.1 mm in diameter. Time course changes of cell growth and camptothecin production showed that camptothecin accumulation was started at the end of the growth phase and the maximum content was obtained 10 days after inoculation. Yeast extract elicitor increased camptothecin accumulation 4 times. Methyl jasmonate and jasmonic acid also increased camptothecin production 6 and 11 times, respectively.

  • We develope plasma monitoring system which detect plasma signals and store them for Laser welding quality evaluation and analysis using photo detector. The most fundamental and important aspects in such a system are signal restoration fidelity, noise immunity and noise cancelation capability. In this paper, we propose implementation method using distribute processing structure and hybrid digital communication for high noise cancelation capability, immunity and signal fidelity which are poorly presented in other researches. Lab experimental results and welding experimental results show a effectiveness of proposed method and plasma data is stored with 256 kbps without any communication error. we are implementing various welding defect recognition algorithm in this system.

  • A high impedance fault(HIF) is one of the serious problems facing the electric utility industry today. Because of the high impedance of a downed conductor under some conditions these faults are not easily detected by over-current based protection devices and can cause fires and personal hazard. In this paper a new method for detection of HIF which uses adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) is proposed. Since arcing fault current shows different changes during high and low voltage portion of conductor voltage waveform we firstly divided one cycle of fault current into equal spanned four data windows according to the mangnitude of conductor voltage. Fast fourier transform(FFT) is applied to each data window and the frequency spectrum of current waveform are chosen asinputs of ANFIS after input selection method is preprocessed. Using staged fault and normal data ANFIS is trained to discriminate between normal and HIF status by hybrid learning algorithm. This algorithm adapted gradient descent and least square method and shows rapid convergence speed and improved convergence error. The proposed method represent good performance when applied to staged fault data and HIFLL(high impedance like load)such as arc-welder.

Pan-sharpening Effect in Spatial Feature Extraction

  • A suitable pan-sharpening method has to be chosen with respect to the used spectral characteristic of the multispectral bands and the intended application. The research on pan-sharpening algorithm in improving the accuracy of image classification has been reported. For a classification, preserving the spectral information is important. Other applications such as road detection depend on a sharp and detailed display of the scene. Various criteria applied to scenes with different characteristics should be used to compare the pan-sharpening methods. The pan-sharpening methods in our research comprise rather common techniques like Brovey, IHS(Intensity Hue Saturation) transform, and PCA(Principal Component Analysis), and more complex approaches, including wavelet transformation. The extraction of matching pairs was performed through SIFT descriptor and Canny edge detector. The experiments showed that pan-sharpening techniques for spatial enhancement were effective for extracting point and linear features. As a result of the validation it clearly emphasized that a suitable pan-sharpening method has to be chosen with respect to the used spectral characteristic of the multispectral bands and the intended application. In future it is necessary to design hybrid pan-sharpening for the updating of features and land-use class of a map.

  • Design and performance of 18 GHz phase locked dielectric resonator oscillator(PLDRO) for Point-to-point radio link using analog phase locked loop is described which achieve high stability and low SSB phase noise. The module consists of an 18 GHz voltage controlled dielectric resonator oscillator(VCDRO), buffered amplifier, analog phase detector which are integrated to form a miniature hybrid circuit. In addition, containing a low phase noise VHF PLL has been designed to lock any other conventional N times frequency of crystal oscillator. The module achieves stable phase locked state, exhibits output power of 21 dBm at 18.00 GHz, -34 dBc harmonic suppression and -75 dBc/Hz phase noise at 10 kHz offset frequency from carrier.

  • This paper is about research of scintillator layer, which is used for Hybrid method to increase electric signals in a-Se, the material of Direct method. In case of the thermal evaporation, CsI has column structure which is an disadvantage as scintillator. But it decreases scattering of incident X-ray, has better Light output intensity than other scintillation materials. CsI was made by Thermal evaporation. The Doping material, Na, 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, 0.7g were added in each sample. Analysis of absorbed wavelength, PL(Photoluminescence), Light output intensity, SEM, and XRD analysis were performed to analyze optical characteristics. Doping rate of CsI:Na to use as scintillation layer in a-Se based detector could be optimized.

Structural Behavior of Mixed $LiMn_2O_4-LiNi_{1/3}Co_{1/3}Mn_{1/3}O_2$ Cathode in Li-ion Cells during Electrochemical Cycling

  • The research and development of hybrid electric vehicle (HEV), plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) and electric vehicle (EV) are intensified due to the energy crisis and environmental concerns. In order to meet the challenging requirements of powering HEV, PHEV and EV, the current lithium battery technology needs to be significantly improved in terms of the cost, safety, power and energy density, as well as the calendar and cycle life. One new technology being developed is the utilization of composite cathode by mixing two different types of insertion compounds [e.g., spinel $LiMn_2O_4$ and layered $LiMO_2$ (M=Ni, Co, and Mn)]. Recently, some studies on mixing two different types of cathode materials to make a composite cathode have been reported, which were aimed at reducing cost and improving self-discharge. Numata et al. reported that when stored in a sealed can together with electrolyte at $80^{\circ}C$ for 10 days, the concentrations of both HF and $Mn^{2+}$ were lower in the can containing $LiMn_2O_4$ blended with $LiNi_{0.8}Co_{0.2}O_2$ than that containing $LiMn_2O_4$ only. That reports clearly showed that this blending technique can prevent the decline in capacity caused by cycling or storage at elevated temperatures. However, not much work has been reported on the charge-discharge characteristics and related structural phase transitions for these composite cathodes. In this presentation, we will report our in situ x-ray diffraction studies on this mixed composite cathode material during charge-discharge cycling. The mixed cathodes were incorporated into in situ XRD cells with a Li foil anode, a Celgard separator, and a 1M $LiPF_6$ electrolyte in a 1 : 1 EC : DMC solvent (LP 30 from EM Industries, Inc.). For in situ XRD cell, Mylar windows were used as has been described in detail elsewhere. All of these in situ XRD spectra were collected on beam line X18A at National Synchrotron Light Source (NSLS) at Brookhaven National Laboratory using two different detectors. One is a conventional scintillation detector with data collection at 0.02 degree in two theta angle for each step. The other is a wide angle position sensitive detector (PSD). The wavelengths used were 1.1950 ${\AA}$ for the scintillation detector and 0.9999 A for the PSD. The newly installed PSD at beam line X18A of NSLS can collect XRD patterns as short as a few minutes covering $90^{\circ}$ of two theta angles simultaneously with good signal to noise ratio. It significantly reduced the data collection time for each scan, giving us a great advantage in studying the phase transition in real time. The two theta angles of all the XRD spectra presented in this paper have been recalculated and converted to corresponding angles for ${\lambda}=1.54\;{\AA}$, which is the wavelength of conventional x-ray tube source with Cu-$k{\alpha}$ radiation, for easy comparison with data in other literatures. The structural changes of the composite cathode made by mixing spinel $LiMn_2O_4$ and layered $Li-Ni_{1/3}Co_{1/3}Mn_{1/3}O_2$ in 1 : 1 wt% in both Li-half and Li-ion cells during charge/discharge are studied by in situ XRD. During the first charge up to ~5.2 V vs. $Li/Li^+$, the in situ XRD spectra for the composite cathode in the Li-half cell track the structural changes of each component. At the early stage of charge, the lithium extraction takes place in the $LiNi_{1/3}Co_{1/3}Mn_{1/3}O_2$ component only. When the cell voltage reaches at ~4.0 V vs. $Li/Li^+$, lithium extraction from the spinel $LiMn_2O_4$ component starts and becomes the major contributor for the cell capacity due to the higher rate capability of $LiMn_2O_4$. When the voltage passed 4.3 V, the major structural changes are from the $LiNi_{1/3}Co_{1/3}Mn_{1/3}O_2$ component, while the $LiMn_2O_4$ component is almost unchanged. In the Li-ion cell using a MCMB anode and a composite cathode cycled between 2.5 V and 4.2 V, the structural changes are dominated by the spinel $LiMn_2O_4$ component, with much less changes in the layered $LiNi_{1/3}Co_{1/3}Mn_{1/3}O_2$ component, comparing with the Li-half cell results. These results give us valuable information about the structural changes relating to the contributions of each individual component to the cell capacity at certain charge/discharge state, which are helpful in designing and optimizing the composite cathode using spinel- and layered-type materials for Li-ion battery research. More detailed discussion will be presented at the meeting.
