  • An innovative Hybrid Passive Resistive configuration for Truss Girder Frames (HPR-TGFs) is introduced in the present study. The proposed system is principally consisting of Fluid Viscous Dampers (FVDs) and Buckling Restrained Braces (BRBs) as its seismic resistive components. Concurrent utilization of these devices will develop an efficient energy dissipating mechanism which is able to mitigate lateral displacements as well as the base shear, simultaneously. However, under certain circumstances which the presence of FVDs might not be essential, the proposed configuration has the potential to incorporate double BRBs in order to achieve the redundancy of alternative load bearing paths. This study is extending the modern Direct Displacement Based Design (DDBD) procedure as the design methodology for HPR-TGF systems. Based on a series of nonlinear time history analysis, it is demonstrated that the design outcomes are almost identical to the pre-assumed design criteria. This implies that the ultimate characteristics of HPR-TGFs such as lateral stiffness and inter-story drifts are well-proportioned through the proposed design procedure.

  • In this study, the effectiveness of a multi-action hybrid damper (MHD) composed of lead rubber bearing (LRB) and friction pad was verified in terms of seismic performance improvement of a frame structure. The LRB and the friction elements are connected in series, so the LRB governs the intial small deformation and the friction determines large deformation behavior. Cyclic loading tests were conducted by using a half scale steel frame structure with the MHD, and the results indicated that the structure became to have the stable trilinear hysteresis with large initial stiffness and first yielding due to the LRB, and the second yielding due to the friction. The MHD could significantly increase the energy dissipation capacity of the structure and the hysteresis curves obtained by tests were almost identical to the analytically estimated ones.

  • In this paper, collision analysis of the full rake for the Next Generation High-speed EMU is conducted using a 3D/1D hybrid model, which combines 3-dimensional (3D) front-end structure of finite element model and 1-dimensional (1D) multi-body dynamics model in order to analyze train collision with a standard 3D deformable obstacle. The crush forces, passengers' accelerations and energy absorptions of a full rake train can be easily obtained through a simulation of a 1D dynamics model composed of nonlinear springs, dampers and masses. Also the obtained simulation results are very similar to those of a 3D model if an overriding behavior does not occur during collision. The standard obstacle in TSI regulation has been changed from a rigid body to a deformable body, and therefore 3D collision simulations should be conducted because their simulation results depends on the front-end structure of a train. According to the obstacle collision analysis of this study, the obstacle collides with the driver's upper structure after overriding over the front-end module. The 3D/1D hybrid model is effective to evaluate a main energy-absorbing module that is frequently changed during design process and reduce the need time of the modeling and analysis when compared to a 3D full car body.

  • Long span cable-stayed bridges are extremely vulnerable to dynamic excitations such as which caused by traffic load, wind and earthquake. Studies on cable-stayed bridge vibration control have been keenly interested by researchers and engineers in design new bridges and assessing in-service bridges. In this paper, a novel Hybrid-Tuned Mass Damper (H-TMD) is proposed and a hybrid control model named Mixed Logic Dynamic (MLD) is employed to build the bridge-H-TMD system to mitigate the vibrations. Firstly, the fundamental theory and modeling process of MLD model is introduced. After that, a new state switching design of the H-TMD and state space equations for different states are proposed to control the bridge vibrations. As the state switching designation presented, the H-TMDs can applied active force to bridge only if the structural responses are beyond the limited thresholds, otherwise, the vibrations can be reduced by passive components of dampers without active control forces provided. A new MLD model including both passive and active control states is built based on the MLD model theory and the state switching design of H-TMD. Then, the case study is presented to demonstrate the proposed methodology. In the case study, the control scheme with H-TMDs is applied for a long span cable-stayed bridge, and the MLD model is established and simulated with earthquake excitation. The simulation results reveal that the suggested method has a well damping effect and the established system can be switched between different control states as design excellently. Finally, the energy consumptions of H-TMD schemes are compared with that of Active Tuned Mass Damper (ATMD) schemes under variable seismic wave excitations. The compared results show that the proposed H-TMD can save energy than ATMD.

  • Seismic dissipation devices can play a crucial role in mitigating earthquake damages, loss of life and post-event repair and downtime costs. This research investigates the use of ring springs with high-force-to-volume (HF2V) dissipaters to create damage-free, recentring connections and structures. HF2V devices are passive rate-dependent extrusion-based devices with high energy absorption characteristics. Ring springs are passive energy dissipation devices with high self-centring capability to reduce the residual displacements. Dynamic behaviour of a system with nonlinear structural stiffness and supplemental hybrid damping via HF2V devices and ring spring dampers is used to investigate the design space and potential. HF2V devices are modelled with design forces equal to 5% and 10% of seismic weight and ring springs are modelled with loading stiffness values of 20% and 40% of initial structural stiffness and respective unloading stiffness of 7% and 14% of structural stiffness (equivalent to 35% of their loading stiffness). Using a suite of 20 design level earthquake ground motions, nonlinear response spectra for 8 different configurations are generated. Results show up to 50% reduction in peak displacements and greater than 80% reduction in residual displacements of augmented structure compared to the baseline structure. These gains come at a cost of a significant rise in the base shear values up to 200% mainly as a result of the force contributed by the supplemental devices.

  • In this paper, a new energy-efficient semi-active hybrid bulk damper is developed that is cost-effective for use in structural applications. In this work, the possibility of active and semi-active component configurations combined with suitable control algorithms, especially vibration control methods, is explored. The equations of motion for a container bridge equipped with an MDOF Mass Tuned Damper (M-TMD) system are established, and the combination of excitation, adhesion, and control effects are performed by a proprietary package and commercial custom submodel software. Systematic methods for the synthesis of structural components and active systems have been used in many applications because of the main interest in designing efficient devices and high-performance structural systems. A rational strategy can be established by properly controlling the master injection frequency parameter. Simulation results show that the multiscale model approach is achieved and meets accuracy with high computational efficiency. The M-TMD system can significantly improve the overall response of constrained structures by modestly reducing the critical stress amplitude of the frame. This design can be believed to build affordable, safe, environmentally friendly, resilient, sustainable infrastructure and transportation.

  • As the construction of the high-rise building increases worldwide, the effort has been exerted to improve the safety and serviceability if the structure against various types of external dynamic loads such as wind load, seismic load, etc. The mass damper, defined as dynamic absorber in mechanical engineering is known one of the effective methods to control the vibration of flexible large structures. The hybrid mass damper, HMD is known as the most appropriate type of the mass dampers. In this paper, the control force was designed for HMD by numerical simulations and the performance of HMD to control the flexible vibration of the steel tower induced by sinusoidal force excitation was evaluated, also TMD was designed for a 1-DOF lumped mass model.

  • In this study, we suggest that several approaches to evaluate the collision acceleration value of a car in the article 35 and the guideline 16 of Korean rolling stock safety regulation. There are various methods to evaluate collision acceleration such as; a displacement comparison method by the double integration of filtered acceleration data, a velocity comparison method by the integration of filtered acceleration data, an analysis method of time-velocity curve, or a differential method of time-velocity curve. We compared these methods one another using 1D dynamic simulation model composed of nonlinear dampers, springs and bars, and masses. Also, we applied these methods to a hybrid model, which is made of 3D shell element model and 2D collision dynamics model, in order to evaluate whether 1D force-displacement curve modeling for energy absorbing structures have an effect on the collision acceleration levels or not.
