This study aims to select the most appropriate poplar clones for planting on short rotation coppice poplar plantations in a riparian area. The research investigated biomass production, nitrogen and carbon absorption with 2-year-old poplar (Populus spp.) clones including P. euramericana clone Eco28, P. deltoides hybrid clone 97-18, and P. alba ${\times}$ P. glandulosa hybrid clone 72-30. The average number of stems per stump was five and P. euramericana clone Eco28 had the greatest average number of live stems per stump with 5.9. The average stem diameter was 23.2 mm, and P. deltoides hybrid clone 97-18 achieved the largest average diameter with 25.4 mm. The average annual above-ground biomass production of Populus deltoides hybrid clone 97-18 was 16.1 ton/ha/year, followed by P. alba ${\times}$ P. glandulosa hybrid clone 72-30 and P. euramericana clone Eco28, 12.3 and 5.4 ton/ha/year, respectively. The average annual nitrogen uptake of poplar clones was 46.5 kg/ha/year. P. alba ${\times}$ P. glandulosa hybrid clone 72-30 had the highest average, 63.1 kg/ha/year. The average of annual carbon absorption was estimated 5.3 ton/ha/year and Populus deltoides hybrid clone 97-18 showed the best results with 7.7 ton/ha/year. Based on the results given above, P. deltoides hybrid aspen clone 97-18 is considered as the most suitable poplar clones for wood biomass production on riparian areas.

Indigenous Yakutian cattle' adaptation to the hardest subarctic conditions makes them a valuable genetic resource for cattle breeding in the Siberian area. Since early last century, crossbreeding between native Yakutian cattle and imported Simmental and Kholmogory breeds has been widely adopted. In this study, variations at 22 polymorphic microsatellite loci in 5 populations of Yakutian, Kholmogory, Simmental, Yakutian-Kholmogory and Yakutian-Simmental cattle were analysed to estimate the genetic contribution of Yakutian cattle to the two hybrid populations. Three statistical approaches were used: the weighted least-squares (WLS) method which considers all allele frequencies; a recently developed implementation of a Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method called likelihood-based estimation of admixture (LEA); and a model-based Bayesian admixture analysis method (STRUCTURE). At population-level admixture analyses, the estimate based on the LEA was consistent with that obtained by the WLS method. Both methods showed that the genetic contribution of the indigenous Yakutian cattle in Yakutian-Kholmogory was small (9.6% by the LEA and 14.2% by the WLS method). In the Yakutian-Simmental population, the genetic contribution of the indigenous Yakutian cattle was considerably higher (62.8% by the LEA and 56.9% by the WLS method). Individual-level admixture analyses using STRUCTURE proved to be more informative than the multidimensional scaling analysis (MDSA) based on individual-based genetic distances. Of the 9 Yakutian-Simmental animals studied, 8 showed admixed origin, whereas of the 14 studied Yakutian-Kholmogory animals only 2 showed Yakutian ancestry (>5%). The mean posterior distributions of individual admixture coefficient (q) varied greatly among the samples in both hybrid populations. This study revealed a minor existing contribution of the Yakutian cattle in the Yakutian-Kholmogory hybrid population, but in the Yakutian-Simmental hybrid population, a major genetic contribution of the Yakutian cattle was seen. The results reflect the different crossbreeding patterns used in the development of the two hybrid populations. Additionally, molecular evidence for differences among individual admixture proportions was seen in both hybrid populations, resulting from the stochastic process in crossing over generations.
The full-length cDNA of the porcine peroxisomal ${\Delta}^3$,${\Delta}^2$-enoyl-CoA isomerase (PECI) gene encodes a monofunctional peroxisomal ${\Delta}^3$,${\Delta}^2$-enoyl-CoA isomerase. Cloning and sequencing of the porcine PECI cDNA revealed the presence of an 1185-base pair open reading frame predicted to encode a 394-amino acid protein by the 5'rapid amplification of cDNA ends (5'RACE) and EST sequences. The porcine PECI gene was expressed in seven tissues (heart, liver, spleen, lung, kidney, skeletal muscle, fat) which was revealed by reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). The porcine PECI was mapped to SSC71/2 p11-13 using the somatic cell hybrid panel (SCHP) and the radiation hybrid panel (RH) (LOD score 12.84). The data showed that PECI was closely linked to marker S0383. A C/T single nucleotide polymorphism in PECI exon 10 (3'UTR) was detected as a PvuII PCR-RFLP. Association analysis in our experimental pig population showed that different genotypes of PECI gene were significantly associated with the Average Backfat thickness (ABF) (p<0.05) and Buttock backfat thickness (p<0.01).

'Yeeun' an Asiatic hybrid lily was released in 2005 at National Horticultural Research Institute (NHRI), Rural Development Administration (RDA), Suwon, Korea. The cross was made in 1994 between Liliium Asiatic 'White Bird' white colored, and Liliium Asiatic 'Cote d'Azur', pink colored variety. It was preliminarily selected as 'A96-5' in 1996. Multiplication and bulbing, and characteristic tests were conducted from 1997 to 2004. The evaluation of characteristics was investigated as 'Wongyo C1-21' in 2004 at Suwon. 'Yeeun' flowers in the end of June and grows 41.6 cm stem length. Flowers are upward-facing, unspotted in petals and yellow green (RHS, 18C). Year-round flowering can be by storing the bulb under $-1.5^{\circ}C$ conditions. For forcing culture, it is necessary to add calcium to the fertilizer or remove side scales to prevent leaf scorch. It is needed to control Botrytis disease in wet season.
This study was carried out to establish breeding system for interspecific hybridization of Lilium using spontaneous meiotic polyploidization of $F_1$ OA hybrid and its progenies. Pollen viability and germination of $F_1$ OA interspecific hybrid showed variation by collection time, indicating that pollen grain in June, which was natural blooming season, had better viability and germination ability than in October. 2n-gametes from spontaneous meiotic polyploidization of OA hybrid were crossed with either diploid Asiatic or Oriental hybrid, and subsequent progenies crossed with Asiatic hybrid as female and OA hybrid as male showed the highest efficiency, where 2x-2x A$\times$OA produced 0.64 plants per cross combination, while 2x-2x, O$\times$OA and 2x-2x, OA$\times$A crosses produced 0.42 and 0.4 plant per ovary, and especially no progeny was obtained in 2x-2x, OA$\times$O cross combination. For the subsequent progeny production, a cross between diploid Asiatic hybrid as female and diploid OA hybrid as male was the best ploidy combination. Ploidy level of subsequent progeny derived from backcross with 2n-gametes of OA hybrid revealed that triploids from 2x-2x OA$\times$A, tetraploids from both 4x-2x, AA$\times$OA and OO$\times$OA, diploid from 2x-2x, O$\times$OA, and diploids or triploids from 2x-2x, A$\times$OA crosses were produced respectively.

This study was accomplished to select breeding materials among the pear germplasm 6 species 43 accessions and check out the expression of scab incidence of inter specific hybrids of 5 crosses 609 seedlings for scab resistance breeding. Fruitlets scab incidence of P. pyrifolia, P. bretschneideri and P. ussuriensis were 59.5, 73.4 and 63.0% respectively, and also fruitlets scab incidence of interspecific hybrid cultivars between P. pyrifolia and P. bretschneideri were 77.7%. However, fruitlets scab incidence of P. communis and interspecific hybrid accessions between P. pyrifolia and P. communis were significantly less than 15%. As a result of the Duncan test, scab resistance of pear accessions were classified into two groups: P. communis and their hybrid were resistance and P. bretschneideri, P. pyrifolia, P. ussuriensis, and among their hybrid were susceptible. Also, it showed the same trend in the seedlings. Scab incidence of 'Seolwon' ${\times}$ 'Chuwhangbae' and 'Supergold' ${\times}$ 'Mantienhong' in P. pyrifolia seedlings showed more than 80%, while that of interspecific hybrid between P. pyrifolia and P. communis showed about 2%. It showed scab resistance of P. communis transferred to hybrid seedlings and expressed to be dominant in their seedlings. Namely, P. communis was good breeding materials for scab resistance.
FoxO1, FoxO3a and FoxO4 belong to the FoxO gene family, which play important roles in the PI3K/PKB pathway. In this study, we cloned the porcine FoxO1, FoxO3a and FoxO4 sequences and assigned them to SSC11p11-15, SSC1p13 and SSC xq13 using somatic cell hybrid panel (SCHP) and radiation hybrid panel (IMpRH). RT-PCR results showed that these three genes are expressed in multiple tissues. Sequencing of PCR products from different breeds identified a synonymous T/C polymorphism in exon 2 of FoxO3a. This FoxO3a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) can be detected by AvaII restriction enzyme. The allele frequencies of this SNP were investigated in Dahuabai, Meishan, Tongcheng, Yushan, Large White, and Duroc pigs. Association of the genotypes with growth and carcass traits showed that different genotypes of FoxO3a were associated with carcass length and backfat thickness between 6th and 7th ribs (BTR) and drip loss (p<0.05).
A new yellow waxy corn hybrid "Daehakchal Gold 1" was developed from single cross between Yeongdeok Jaera and Okchen Jaera at Chungnam National University in 2007. Inbred CNU57 derived from Yeongdeok Jaera was used as the seed parent of Daehakchal Gold 1, and inbred CNU 27 derived from Okchen Jaera as the pollen parent. Tasseling date of this hybrid was seven day later than that of check hybrid, Chalok 1. Daehakchal Gold 1 was 19.7cm in ear length and 4.5cm in ear diameter. The yield of Daehakchal Gold 1 and check hybrid in dry matter were 146.5g and 113.9g per plant, respectively. On yield trial, which were increased 29.7% compared with a check hybrid, Chalok 1. Especially, Daehakchal Gold 1 had yellow kernels and good eating quality. The ratio of kernel set length/ear length was similar to Chalok 1. It is moderately resistant to Bioporalis maydis and corn borer. The yields of Daehakchal Gold 1 in fresh ear weight and in number of fresh ear were 16% and 8%, respectively, higher than those of a check hybrid in regional yield trials for three years. Seed production of this hybrid has gone well due to good match during crossing between seed and pollen parents.
Cytoplasmic male sterility (CMS) is a maternally inherited trait leading to loss of the ability to produce fertile pollen and is extensively used in hybrid crop breeding. Ogura-CMS was originally generated by insertion of orf138 upstream of atp8 in the radish mitochondrial genome and transferred to Brassica crops for hybrid breeding. Gene expression changes by dysfunctional mitochondria in Ogura-CMS result in pollen developmental defects, but little is known about gene expression patterns in vegetative tissue. To examine the interaction between nuclear and organellar regulation of gene expression, microarray and subsequent gene expression experiments were conducted with leaves of $F_1$ hybrid Chinese cabbage derived from self-incompatible (SI) or Ogura-CMS parents (Brassica rapa ssp. pekinensis). Out of 24,000 genes deposited on a KBGP24K microarray, 66 genes were up-regulated and 26 genes were down-regulated by over 2.5 fold in the CMS leaves. Up-regulated genes included stress-response genes and mitochondrial protein genes, while genes for ascorbic acid biosynthesis and thylakoid proteins were down-regulated. Most of the major component genes for light reactions of photosynthesis were highly expressed in leaves of both SI and CMS plants, but most of the corresponding proteins were found to be greatly reduced in leaves of CMS plants, indicating posttranscriptional regulation. Reduction in thylakoid proteins and chlorophylls led to reduction in photosynthetic efficiency and chlorosis of Ogura-CMS at low temperatures. This research provides a foundation for studying chloroplast function regulated by mitochondrial signal and for using organelle genome introgression in molecular breeding.
