  • Objectives : This study investigated poor self-rated health and its associated factors in married Korean women, focusing on the burdens related to family affairs and social support. Methods : Cross-sectional data from 3,039 married women (between 25 and 64 years old) who completed Korean Longitudinal surveys of Women and Families were analyzed. Results : Among working women, only two factors-lack of husband's involvement in housework and insufficient communication with husband - influenced poor self-rated health. Among housewives, lack of husband's involvement in housework, insufficient communication with husband, low satisfaction of marriage, and avoidance of alcohol consumption were associated with poor self-rated health. Conclusions : Regardless of whether women are employed or housewives, husband's support is a very important factor affecting women's health. Social efforts for changing perceptions and values are needed so that men and women mutually support each other in family affairs.

  • This study investigated how different relationships the family has with its social networks by social class. Among research families' primary social networks, the wife's relatives are the most, the neighbor the second, the husband's relative the third, and the church (or other religious groups) the fourth. Social class does not make any difference in what social network is the family's primary social network. When the husband or the wife participates in a social network, he or she tends to participate alone without his or her spouse. When the husband's educational level is high, the wife tends to participate in her alumni association alone. When the husband is in a professional or a white-collar occupation, he is likely to socialize with his work associates alone. On the contrary, when the family income gets high, the husband tends to bring his wife to his alumni association. When looking for a job, most husbands and wives do not resort to a social network for help. Lower-class people are more likely to obtain jobs through their social networks compared to higher-class people. That is, the lower one's educational levle, one's occupational status, or the family income is, the more likely one gets help from some social networks in searching jobs.

  • The objective of this study was to date coffin woods of a grave of husband and wife, using the tree rings, which were excavated from Hoamdong, Chungju city in the central area of South Korea. The species of coffin woods was Japanese Red Pine (Pinus densiflora S. et Z.), one of the major conifers growing in Korea. The husband coffin was dated as A.D. 1628. Due to the absence of bark in the wife's coffin, the number of sapwood rings was estimated to obtain the cutting date. The cutting date of wife's one was estimated to be A.D. 1651${\pm}$10. The Jeogori Jacket for women, which was found in the husband coffin, indicates that the husband died earlier than the wife, as the tree-ring dates suggested.
