A Study on Cubism Fashion Style Appearing in Modern Fashion: Focused on the 2010 S/S-2013 S/S Paris Collection (현대 패션에 나타난 큐비즘스타일패션 연구: 2010 S/S - 2013 S/S 파리컬렉션을 중심으로)

  • This study analyzed the group of experts who were related to cubism, selected among the works of 2010~2013 Paris Collection based on F.G.R.(Focus Group Research). According to the results of this study, there were appeared first, 'a one-piece dress' second, 'H silhouette' third, 'cotton', in case of item distribution and frequency. The analysis was done by using the manner of expression, cubical expression, exaggeration, distortion, dismantlement, geometrical division of face, mix-match look, wraparound repetition, asymmetric structure, etc. Based on the outcomes of the analysis on figurative design elements, this study adjusted three manners appearing on cubism fashion style. First, it was 'avant garde manner' of constitution or 'dismantlement' which was compiled into multi-view representations of overlaps and viewpoints by repetitive use of color tone trimming detail. Second, it was 'geomagnetic block placement' which expresses cubism with geometric partitioning of surface and separation of panel by cutting disintegration. Finally, it was 'distortion and simplification of silhouette' which is a distortion created by constitution-line pressed thin with silhouette. It maximizes the beauty of human body outline, which was distorted by three-dimensional-manipulation, and simplified by ellipsis for another shape for the extension or expansion of detail trimming.

Peroxynitrite-scavenging Constituents from the Brown Alga Sargassum thunbergii

  • Peroxynitrite formation in vivo is implicated in numerous human diseases and there is considerable interest in the use of antioxidants and natural products for their treatment. The three components (1-3) isolated from Sargassum thunbergii as well as the organic solvent-soluble fractions and the aqueous layer of S. thunbergii were evaluated for their potential to scavenge authentic ONOO$\^$-/ and ONOO$\^$-/ derived from 3-morpholinosydnonimine (SIN-1). The antioxidant activity of the individual fractions was in the order of 85% aqueous (aq.) MeOH>n$\^$-/ BuOH>n-hexane>H$_2$O. The three known compounds, sargahydroquinoic acid (1), sargaquinoic acid (2) and sargachromenol (3) showed peroxynitrite-scavenging activities comparable to those of L-ascorbic acid and penicillamine. These results showed a possible antioxidant activity in major constituents of S. thunbergii.

Eco-friendly Dyeing using Houttuynia cordata Extract: Dyeability and Functionality of Wool Fabrics (어성초 추출색소를 이용한 친환경 염색: 양모직물의 염색성과 기능성을 중심으로)

  • The objective was to study the efficiency of Houttuynia cordata extract colorants as eco-friendly and functional dye for wool fabrics. Effects of dyeing conditions and mordanting on dye uptake, color change, and colorfastness were investigated. Also, antimicrobial activity and deodorization performance were evaluated. The Houttuynia cordata colorants showed good affinity to wool fabrics and produced YR Munsell color. The optimum condition of dyeing was 2.0% of colorants concentration(o.w.b.) at 100℃ for 60 minutes under pH 5.3. Regardless of the mordant type and mordanting method, mordants improved dye uptake and the increase in dye uptake by Fe mordant was higher than that of Al mordant. Al post-mordanting and Fe mordanting changed the color of dyed fabrics with Y Munsell color. The colorfastness of un-mordanted and Al post-mordanted fabrics were excellent above grade 4. Bacteria reduction rate(Staphylococcus aureus) of wool fabrics dyed with Houttuynia cordata colorants was excellent at 98.2%. Also, the deodorization was good at 81%. The results show Houttuynia cordata colorants can be used as a functional natural dye for wool fabrics.

5-bromoprotocatechualdehyde suppresses growth of human lung cancer cells through modulation of ROS and the AKT/MAPK signaling pathway

  • Early-stage lung cancer is the deadliest form of the disease. In this study, we investigated the anticancer activity of 5-bromoprotocatechualdehyde (BPCA) extracted from the seaweed Polysiphonia morrowii Harvey (P. morrowii) in lung cancer H460 cells. We extracted P. morrowii powder thrice with 80% aqueous methanol and separated the extract using high-performance liquid chromatography. We then tested BPCA's effects on cell viability, apoptosis, reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, and protein expression Our results showed that BPCA inhibited tumor cell growth and ROS production and induced apoptosis through mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) and AKT signaling pathways in lung cancer cells. When BPCA was combined with hydrogen peroxide, ROS production and apoptosis increased even further due to the regulation of AKT signaling and JNK-MAPKs pathways. These findings suggest that BPCA induces lung-cancer-cell death through ROS-mediated phosphorylation in AKT/MAPK signaling. This could lead to the development of new and effective treatments for early-stage lung cancer.

Physiological and Functional Properties of Salicornia herbacea (Tungtungmadi) Leaf Extracts

  • The physiologically relevant functional properties of various solvent extracts from Salicornia herbacea leaves were investigated by measuring lipid peroxidation, DPPH radical scavenging, nitrite scavenging, and xanthine oxidase inhibition. Ethyl ether, chloroform, ethyl acetate and n-butanol fractions obtained from the 80% aqueous ethanol extracts of Salicornia herbacea leaves showed strong antioxidative activities in linoleic acid methyl esters. Peroxide values (POV) were not significantly different among the samples treated with the different fractions; the incubation time required to reach a peroxide value of 80 meq/kg was about 40 hrs. However, control linoleic acid methyl esters had POV of more than 480 meq/kg after 40 hrs. The DPPH radical scavenging activity of the ethyl acetate fraction was much more effective than diethyl ether, n-butanol, chloroform and water fractions, with an $IC_{50}$/ of 279 $\mu\textrm{g}$/mL, but less effective than ascorbic acid ($IC_{50}$/ : 67 $\mu\textrm{g}$/mL). The nitrite scavenging activities of all fractions increased as pH decreased. Among the fractions, nitrite scavenging activities of diethyl ether and ethyl acetate fractions at pH 1.2 were highest at 59.0 and 56.2%, respectively. The diethyl ether fraction obtained from the 80% aqueous ethanol extract of Salicornia herbacea loaves was the most effective inhibitor of xanthine oxidase of all the solvent extracts at 84% inhibition for a 1 mg/mL concentration. These results suggest that Salicornia herbacea leaf extracts may be effective antioxidants, not only in food stability, but also in human health.

Screening of Fibrinolytic Enzyme Producing from Microorganisms in Korean Fermented Soybean Paste and Optimum Conditions of Enzyme Production. (된장 유래 혈전분해효소 생산균주의 분리 및 최적 효소생산 조건 탐색)

  • This study was investigated to find out optimal medium maximizing the production of fibrinolytic enzyme by Bacillus sp. isolated from Korean fermented soybean paste, which could hydrolyze the fibrin produced through the blood coagulation mechanism in human body. Among carbon sources tested, galactose was most effective for the enzyme production, and the level of the concentration for the optimal enzyme production was $4\%$(w/v). For nitrogen sources tested, malt extract was most effective for the enzyme production, and level of the concentration for optimal enzyme production was $4\%$(w/v). For mineral sources tested, $K_2HPO_4$ was most effective for enzyme production. The enzyme was maximally produced by cultivating the organism at the liquid medium of the initial pH 6 and temperature of $40^{\circ}C$.

Antigastritic Effect of Carbenoxolone Disodium from Glycyrrhizae Radix (감초성분 Carbenoxolone Disodium의 항위염 효과)

  • Glycyrrhizae Radix, the dried roots of Glycyrrhiza glabra or Glycyrrhiza uralensis Fischer(Legumino-sae), has been used as a medicine for treatment of imflammation, arthritis, respiratory ailment, skin diseases and liver problems. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of 70% ethanol extract, 18-${\beta}$-glycyrrhetinic acid, glycyrol and carbenoxolone disodium from Glycyrrhizae Radix on gastritis and gastric cancer. Using these materials, we tested antibacterial activity against Helicobacter pylori, antigastritic activity for HCI-ethanol-induced gastric lesion and the pylorus ligated gastric secretion with rats, and cell viability in gastric cancer cell. 18-${\beta}$-glycyrrhetinic acid and carbenoxolone disodium decreased the volume of gastric secretion and acid output in pylorus ligated rats. Also, carbenoxolone disodium had a strong effect of antibacterial activity on H. pylori. In addition 18-${\beta}$-glycyrrhetinic acid and glycyrol reduced cell viability in human gastric cancer cells(AGS and SNU638 cell) in dose-dependent manner. The reduction of total acid output and gastric secretion as well as the anti-bacterial activity against H. pylori might account for the antigastritic effects of carbenoxolone disodium.

Protein tyrosine phosphatase controls breast cancer invasion through the expression of matrix metalloproteinase-9

  • The expression of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) produced by cancer cells has been associated with the high potential of metastasis in several human carcinomas, including breast cancer. Several pieces of evidence demonstrate that protein tyrosine phosphatases (PTP) have functions that promote cell migration and metastasis in breast cancer. We analyzed whether PTP inhibitor might control breast cancer invasion through MMP expression. Herein, we investigate the effect of 4-hydroxy- 3,3-dimethyl-2H benzo[g]indole-2,5(3H)-dione (BVT948), a novel PTP inhibitor, on 12-O-tetradecanoyl phorbol-13-acetate (TPA)-induced MMP-9 expression and cell invasion in MCF-7 cells. The expression of MMP-9 and cell invasion increased after TPA treatment, whereas TPA-induced MMP-9 expression and cell invasion were decreased by BVT948 pretreatment. Also, BVT948 suppressed NF-${\kappa}B$ activation in TPA-treated MCF-7 cells. However, BVT948 didn't block TPA-induced AP-1 activation in MCF-7 cells. Our results suggest that the PTP inhibitor blocks breast cancer invasion via suppression of the expression of MMP-9.

Inhibitory activity of gintonin on inflammation in human IL-1β-stimulated fibroblast-like synoviocytes and collagen-induced arthritis in mice

  • Background: Gintonin is a newly derived glycolipoprotein from the roots of ginseng. The purpose of this study is to investigate the anti-arthritic efficacy of Gintonin on various proteases and inflammatory mediators that have an important role in arthritis. Methods: Fibroblast-like synoviocytes (FLS) were treated with Gintonin and stimulated with interleukin (IL)-1β 1 hour later. The antioxidant effect of Gintonin was measured using MitoSOX and H2DCFDA experiments. The anti-arthritic efficacy of Gintonin was examined by analyzing the expression levels of inflammatory mediators using RT-PCR, western blot, and ELISA. The phosphorylation of mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathways and translocation of nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB)/p65 into the nucleus were also analyzed using western blot, ELISA, and immunocytochemistry. Collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) mice model was used. Mice were orally administered with Gintonin (25, 50, and 100 mg/kg) every 2 days for 45 days. The body weight, arthritis score, squeaking score, and paw volume were measured as the behavioral parameters. After sacrifice, H&E and safranin-O staining were performed for histological analysis. Results: Gintonin significantly inhibited the expression of inflammatory intermediates. Gintonin prevented NF-κB/p65 from moving into the nucleus through the JNK and ERK MAPK phosphorylation in FLS cells. Moreover, Gintonin suppressed the symptoms of arthritis in the CIA mice model. Conclusion: As a result, the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects of Gintonin were demonstrated, and ultimately the anti-arthritic effect was proved. Collectively, Gintonin has a great potential as a therapeutic agent for arthritis treatment.

Antioxidative activities of Artemisia capillaris-Fermented Hericium erinaceum Mycelium (인진쑥 노루궁뎅이 버섯균사체 발효물의 항산화 활성)

  • The hot water extract from Artemisia capillaris fermented with Hericium erinaceum mycelium (AC-HE) were assessed for the protection against oxidative modification of biological macromolecules and cell death. Antioxidant activity of AC-HE evaluated using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical, 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) radical and peroxyl radical scavenging assays. AC-HE showed 61.73% DPPH radical scavenging activity at $500{\mu}g/mL$, 97.39% ABTS radical scavenging activity at $250{\mu}g/mL$, and 44.18% peroxyl radical scavenging activity at $100{\mu}g/mL$. AC-HE were shown to significantly inhibited DNA strand breakage induced by peroxyl radical. AC-HE also prevented peroxyl radical-mediated human serum albumin modification. AC-HE effectively inhibited $H_2O_2$ induced cell death and significantly increased of the 11.47% cell survival at $100{\mu}g/mL$. AC-HE also decreased intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels in $H_2O_2$-treated cells. The results suggested that AC-HE can contribute to antioxidant and protected cells from oxidative stress-induced cell injury.
