Recently, ubiquitous sensor network (USN) has been applied to many areas including environment monitoring. A few studies applied the USN to disaster prevention and emergency management, in particular, aiming to conserve cultural heritage. USN is an useful technology to do online real-time monitoring for the purpose of early detection of the fire which is a critical cause of damage and destruction of cultural heritages. It is necessary to online monitor the cultural heritages that human has a difficulty to access or their external appearance and beauty are important, by using the USN. However, there exists false warning from USN-based monitoring systems without human intervention. In this paper, we presented an alternative to resolve the problem by applying ontology. Our intelligent fire early detection systems for conserving cultural heritages are based on ontology and inference rules, and tested under laboratory environments.

Ubiquitous services are high quality and differentiated services which are provided for users by recognizing the context of users and environmental conditions actively. In this case, context-aware middleware is one of the most important technologies required to implement the ubiquitous services. In this paper, we propose a method for providing ubiquitous services in a specific user space effectively and monitoring human bio-sensors. That is, the design and implementation of intelligent home service middleware and monitoring bio-sensors based on context awareness is discussed here. Context information from various sensors is gathered, and suitable services are inferred and provided to users by the middleware system. In our approach, user services can be modelled easily by using facts and rules, and the system can be extended easily to support various ubiquitous services other than intelligent home services also. The system can be integrated with external applications and legacy systems effectively by using various protocols such as RMI, socket and HTTP, XML and etc. We have designed and evaluated various facts and rules for intelligent home services in real environments. Functionality evaluation with the system shows that ubiquitous services can be provided to users effectively in a home environment.
A computer-assisted microbiological quality assurance program was developed based on HACCP data obtained from a 500 bed general hospital by assessing time and temperature conditions and microbiological qualities of six categories of menu items according to the process of food product flow. The purpose of the study was to develop a computer-assisted microbiological quality assurance program in order to simplify the assessment procedures and to provide a maximum assurance to foodservice personnel and the public. A 16-Bit personnel computer compatible with IBM-PC/AT was used. The data base files and processing programs were created using dBASE III plus packages. The contents of the computerized system are summarized as knows: 1. When the input program for hazard analysis runs, a series of questions are asked to determine hazards and assess their severity and risks. Critical control points and monitoring methods for CCPs are identified and saved in Master file. 2. Output and search programs for hazard analysis are composed of 6 categories of recipe data file list, code identification list, and HACCP identification of the specific menu item. 3. When the user selects a specific category of recipe from 6 categories presented on the screen and runs data file list, a series of menu item list, CCP list, monitoring methods list are generated. When the code search program runs, menu names, ingredients, amounts and a series of codes are generated. 4. When the user types in a menu item and an identification code, critical control points and monitoring methods are generated for each menu item.
Deoxynivalenol (DON) and related trichothecene mycotoxins are extensively distributed in the cereal-based food and feed stuffs worldwide. Recent climate changes and global grain trade increased chance of exposure to more DON and related toxic metabolites in poorly managed production systems. Monitoring the biological and environmental exposures to the toxins are crucial in protecting human and animals from toxicities of the hazardous contaminants in food or feeds. Exposure biomarkers including urine DON itself are prone to shift to less harmful metabolites by intestinal microbiota and liver metabolic enzymes. De-epoxyfication of DON by gut microbes such as Eubacterium strain BBSH 797 and Eubacterium sp. DSM 11798 leads to more fecal secretion of DOM-1. By contrast, most of plant-derived DON-glucoside is also easily catabolized to free DON by gut microbes, which produces more burden to body. Phase 2 hepatic metabolism also contributes to the glucuronidation of DON, which can be useful urine biomarkers. However, chemical modification could be very typical depending on the anthropologic or genetic background, luminal bacteria, and hepatic metabolic enzyme susceptibility to the toxins in the diet. After toxin exposure, effect biomarkers are also important in estimating the linkage and mechanisms of foodborne diseases in human and animal population. Most prominent adverse effects are demonstrated in the DON-induced immunological and behavioral disorders. For instance, acutely elevated interleukin-8 from insulted gut exposed to dietaty DON is a dominant clinical biomarker in human and animals. Moreover, subchronic exposure to the toxins is associated with high levels of serum IgA, a biological mediator of IgA nephritis. In particular, anorexia monitoring using mouse models are recently developed to monitor the biological activities of DON-induced feed refusal. It is also mechanistically linked to alteration of serotoin and peptide YY, which are promising biomarkers of neurological disorders by the toxins. As animal-alternative biomonitoring, huamn enterocyte-based assay has been developed and more realistic gut mimetic models would be useful in monitoring the effect biomarkers in resposne to toxic contaminants in the future investigations.
Nowadays, one of the most common diseases is chronic mental fatigue syndrome. This can be caused by many factors, such as busy life, heavy workload, high population density, and adverse technological impact. Most office workers and students who are sitting all day long while being exposed to this kind of environments are likely to be involved in the mental illness. Therefore, to prevent the illness, it has been highly required to design a device that enables mental fatigue to be monitored continuously without human intervention. This paper proposes a linear regression method to reliably estimating the level of human mental fatigue using wearable physiological sensors, with an estimation error of 0.852. Also, this paper presents an Android application that is able to check mental health conditions in daily life.

In contemporary modern society, people are constantly exposed to many kinds of noise, such as that from machinery, aircraft, construction sites, or road traffic. Noise is considered one of the most indispensable and influential parts of human life. This study investigates the acoustic characteristics of noise transfer from external sources to the human ear. For this study, we measured and analyzed various types of noise environments, installed monitoring speakers in a semi-anechoic room, and conducted intentional noise-filled experiments. In this environment, the size of the sounds generated by use of a portable device was also measured and the SNR (signal to noise ratio) calculated to study the influence of the noise. As sound is transmitted to the ear and the human body, it affects not only auditory damage but also other parts of the body. In this paper, we propose a proper SNR for noise emitted by portable IT equipment to prevent hearing loss when IT equipment is used.

This paper describes a compact and novel wireless vital sign sensor at 2.4 GHz that can detect heartbeat and respiration signals. The oscillator circuit incorporates a planar resonator, which functions as a series feedback element as well as a near-field radiator. The periodic movement of a human body during aerobic exercise could cause an input impedance variation of the radiator within near-field range. This variation results in a corresponding change in the oscillation frequency and this change has been utilized for the sensing of human vital signs. In addition, a surface acoustic wave (SAW) filter and power detector have been used to increase the system sensitivity and to transform the frequency variation into a voltage waveform. The experimental results show that the proposed sensor placed 20 mm away from a human body can detect the vital signs very accurately.

We show three-dimensional distribution of voltages resulted from the leakage current originated from outdoor electrical facilities in a submerged area. In case these facilities are grounded by the neutral line multiple grounding method, the existence of ungrounded electrical facilities can cause a disastrous effect on near-by passengers. In order to investigate this situation, we installed a real-scale test field for the experiment type I (for the leakage current path between a enclosure grounded electrical facility and another enclosure grounded one), and that for the experiment type II (for the leakage current path between a enclosure grounded electrical facility and another ungrounded one). For both cases, we carried out three-dimensional monitoring of the voltage distribution while varying additional conditions such as the exposure of the underground cables and the finishing of cable connection part. The result shows that a disastrous effect on human safety can arise from the leakage current without a pertinent measure for the construction and maintenance of outdoor electrical facilities.

In Malaysia, diagnosis and treatment of patients with mucopolysaccharidoses (MPS) is mainly localized at Hospital Kuala Lumpur, which is the national referral center for rare diseases. To date there are 83 patients diagnosed with MPS in our center, with MPS II being the commonest. The Malaysian National Medicines Policy second edition has a specific section on the orphan drugs which includes recombinant human enzyme for enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) in MPS. So far, National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Agency Malaysia has approved recombinant human enzyme for MPS types I (Loranidase), II (idursulfase), IVA (elosulfase alfa), and VI (Galsufase). Access to Idursulfase beta (another recombinant human enzyme for MPS II) and vestronidase alfa-vjbk (MPS VII) required special authorization on named patient basic. Currently there are 25 patients receiving ERT, 70% of the funding are from Ministry of Health (MOH), the remaining 30% are from various charitable funds and humanitarian programs. Thirteen newly diagnosed patients have to queue for an additional fund. Four patients have been treated with Hematopoietic stem cell transplant. MOH has also published guidelines regarding the patient selection criteria for ERT and treatment monitoring schedule.
