Directorial Characteristics Depicting Nietzschean Nihilism in Animation: A Focus on 'Attack on Titan' (니체의 허무주의가 재현된 애니메이션의 연출적 특성 -<진격의 거인>을 중심으로)

  • After Friedrich Nietzsche's advocacy of nihilism, many literary works, dramas, and films have depicted aspects of human psychology associated with nihilism. Animation, too, has been used to convey nihilism, with narratives infused with nihilistic themes produced as both TV series and theatrical animations. Particularly, animation, as a visual medium capable of realizing any imaginative image unlike other media, possesses distinctive characteristics from live-action cinematography and differs from comics in its temporal properties. Hence, this study aims to analyze how Nietzsche's defined three stages of nihilism are represented within animation characters and how they construct various scenarios, using the anime "Attack on Titan" as a case study. The research unfolds by first examining Nietzsche's types of nihilism and the three stages through a review of literature, while also investigating the portrayal of nihilism in mass media and considering the unique attributes of animation. Secondly, building upon the literature review, the analysis interprets the narrative and constructed world of the chosen case study from a nihilistic perspective, examining four major characters through the stages of passive nihilism, active nihilism, and eternal recurrence. The findings demonstrate that the anime conveys two messages regarding negation and affirmation of one's life and existence, thereby offering viewers an opportunity to deeply contemplate human existence. This study is considered significant as it examines how Nietzschean nihilism is portrayed within the popular entertainment medium of animation.

Predicting Suitable Restoration Areas for Warm-Temperate Evergreen Broad-Leaved Forests of the Islands of Jeollanamdo (전라남도 섬 지역의 난온대 상록활엽수림 복원을 위한 적합지 예측)

  • Poor supervision and tourism activities have resulted in forest degradation in islands in Korea. Since the southern coastal region of the Korean peninsula was originally dominated by warm-temperate evergreen broad-leaved forests, it is desirable to restore forests in this region to their original vegetation. In this study, we identified suitable areas to be restored as evergreen broad-leaved forests by analyzing the environmental factors of existing evergreen broad-leaved forests in the islands of Jeollanam-do. We classified forest lands in the study area into six vegetation types from Sentinel-2 satellite images using a deep learning algorithm and analyzed the tolerance ranges of existing evergreen broad-leaved forests by measuring the locational, topographic, and climatic attributes of the classified vegetation types. Results showed that evergreen broad-leaved forests were distributed more in areas with a high altitudes and steep slope, where human intervention was relatively low. The human intervention has led to a higher distribution of evergreen broad-leaved forests in areas with lower annual average temperature, which was an unexpected but understandable result because an area with higher altitude has a lower temperature. Of the environmental factors, latitude and average temperature in the coldest month (January) were relatively less contaminated by the effects of human intervention, thus enabling the identification of suitable restoration areas of the evergreen broad-leaved forests. The tolerance range analysis of evergreen broad-leaved forests showed that they mainly grew in areas south of the latitude of 34.7° and a monthly average temperature of 1.7℃ or higher in the coldest month. Therefore, we predicted the areas meeting these criteria to be suitable for restoring evergreen broad-leaved forests. The suitable areas cover 614.5 km2, which occupies 59.0% of the total forest lands on the islands of Jeollanamdo, and 73% of actual forests that exclude agricultural and other non-restorable forest lands. The findings of this study can help forest managers prepare a restoration plan and budget for island forests.

Development of a Model of Brain-based Evolutionary Scientific Teaching for Learning (뇌기반 진화적 과학 교수학습 모형의 개발)

  • To derive brain-based evolutionary educational principles, this study examined the studies on the structural and functional characteristics of human brain, the biological evolution occurring between- and within-organism, and the evolutionary attributes embedded in science itself and individual scientist's scientific activities. On the basis of the core characteristics of human brain and the framework of universal Darwinism or universal selectionism consisted of generation-test-retention (g-t-r) processes, a Model of Brain-based Evolutionary Scientific Teaching for Learning (BEST-L) was developed. The model consists of three components, three steps, and assessment part. The three components are the affective (A), behavioral (B), and cognitive (C) components. Each component consists of three steps of Diversifying $\rightarrow$ Emulating (Executing, Estimating, Evaluating) $\rightarrow$ Furthering (ABC-DEF). The model is 'brain-based' in the aspect of consecutive incorporation of the affective component which is based on limbic system of human brain associated with emotions, the behavioral component which is associated with the occipital lobes performing visual processing, temporal lobes performing functions of language generation and understanding, and parietal lobes, which receive and process sensory information and execute motor activities of the body, and the cognitive component which is based on the prefrontal lobes involved in thinking, planning, judging, and problem solving. On the other hand, the model is 'evolutionary' in the aspect of proceeding according to the processes of the diversifying step to generate variants in each component, the emulating step to test and select useful or valuable things among the variants, and the furthering step to extend or apply the selected things. For three components of ABC, to reflect the importance of emotional factors as a starting point in scientific activity as well as the dominant role of limbic system relative to cortex of brain, the model emphasizes the DARWIN (Driving Affective Realm for Whole Intellectual Network) approach.

The Hospital Life of the Patient with Femoral Neck Fracture (대퇴경부 골절 환자의 입원 생활)

  • Nowerdays, the increase of traffic accidents and old age population make the Femoral Neck Fracture(FNF) patients increase. By the improvement of education and standard of living the patients demand better medical service than before. This study is designed to give practical help for the FNF patients by observing their hospital life and establish practical nursing strategies for the FNF patients. For these purposes the Ethnographic Participant Observation was adopted. By this study is focused on the hospital life patient's view. For this end, the field study adopted orthopedic ward in the C University Hospital with 400 beds in Seoul. The object patients of the study were twelve patients. The patients experienced five stages : Embarrassment, Conflict, Stability, Independent, and Extension Stage. The findings and prepared nursing strategies are stated as follows. First, in the Embarrassment Stage they suffered embarrassment, anxiety, pain, they could not do ordinary things. The patients who accidental fractures had anxiety from unfamiliar tests and from hospitalization itself. They lamented that they could not ordinary things, and do nothing but obeying the hospital, and endure the pain. They recognized the changed environment and resigned themselves to life in the ward. In this stage, full openness by the nurses is needed. Second, the attribute of the Conflict Stage were conflict, fear, curiosity, belief, reflection. When they sign the consentment form, they experience conflicts about the possibility of complication, fear of recovery from anesthesia, curiosity about the operation procedure, post - operation state, reflection on their past life, and promise to care for their family members after discharge and keep their religious life faithfully. And they accepted the operation depending on God, believing in modern medicine, and the surgeon. Asking for their changed informations, they expected positive results from the operation. In this stage, an empathic attitude by the nurses is needed. Third, the attribute of the Stability Stage were relief, gratitude, difficulty with excretion, and pain. When they awoke from anesthesia, they felt relief because of a the end of the operation, but they experienced extreme pain, difficulty of excretion in bed. They accepted the changed environment and expected recovery. In this stage, support by the nurses is needed. Fourth, the attributes of the Independence Stage were freedom, exercise, nurturing, anxiety, and discomfort. When they ambulated and exercised, they experienced freedom. They showed exhibited weakness of the digestive organs and discomfort hospital's space, structure, and facilities, the delay of medical certificate issue the lack of prompt response by the medical agents. They ate nurturious food and felt anxiety on the end of hospital life and returning to their ordinary life. They showed the independence of overcoming their environment by increasing exercise and expected their discharges. In this stage, respect by the nurses is needed for the patients to, overcome their environment and prepare for their independence. Fifth, the attributes of the Extension Stage were pessimism, isolation, dissatisfaction, and pain. Accompanied injury and old age made their ward life extend to over seven weeks. They exhibited weariness, melancholy, skeptisis, general pessimistic feeling, and desperation caused by their isolated life. They experienced the digestive discomfort caused by the prolonged medication and psycological pain caused by long-time hospitalization. As a, result, their dissatisfaction on the human, physical, and systematic environments had been increased. They acquired critical power and sought for something to do spending their time. They expected vaguely about the returning of their ordinary life. In this stage, counseling is needed by the nurse to overcome positively their psychological, social, and physical problems. The process of the FNF patient's ward life starts from the dependent state, when they are hospitalized, and gradually progresses to self-fulfillment in order to keep independent life. As a result, the FNF patients showed "Response in Challenge" or "Adaptation in Conflict" through their experiences of social, physical, and psychological difficulties.

A Study on the Relationship between the Use Behaviors, Demographics, and Restaurant Selection Attributes (이용행태 및 인구통계적 특성과 레스토랑 선택속성간의 관계에 관한 연구 -패스트푸드점을 중심으로-)

  • The objective of this study is to identify the attribute factors for fast food selection according to their characteristics of the use behaviors and demographics. The results of these findings suggest the attribute factors for selection were classified into ten : physical service, cleanliness/promptness, human service, convenience/promotion, accessibility, menu variety, food quality, service for child and parking, added service, and comfortness. “Cleanliness” and “good taste” were considered as determining factors in selecting a fast food restaurant. According to the consumer's use behaviors and demographics, attribute factors for fast food selection were significantly different. Therefore, the marketers and managers on the fast food industry should develop their own appropriate marketing strategies and implement effective targeting, positioning, and promotional strategies.

Estimating Transfer Trips in Seoul Metropolitan Urban Railway (Using Transportation Card) (수도권 도시철도 환승통행량 추정방안 (교통카드자료를 이용하여))

  • Separate transportation card readers that record the amount of transfer volume occurring during movement in-between lines within the metropolitan railway transfer stations do not exist. This research proposes a model to estimate passenger transit movements in transfer stations that adequately reproduces characteristics arising during a transfer trip. The model used in this study assumes that passengers adopt transfer behaviors that minimize their generalized costs during transfer trips. Further, two measures are sought in order to reflect attributes of the metropolitan railway. The first is that similar paths connect origin and destination stations. For this, the M-Similar Paths method is applied to the model to identify the similar paths that arise. The second is that passengers perceive increasing number of transfers as additional transfer costs, which is reflected by means of the Stepwise Transfer Coefficient. Two case studies of metropolitan railway are used to propose measures for analysis of transfer trips. Twenty directional transit phenomena are reproduced for Sindorim railway station. Aggregate directional transit(A), aggregate inter-line transit(B), and B/A are calculated on a percentage basis for 33 metropolitan railway transfer stations, and using this, the functional role of transfers is explored.

A study on colour appearance by the size of colour stimulation at foveal vision (중심와 시각에서 색채 자극의 크기에 따른 컬러 어피어런스 연구)

  • Next generation displays show a trend of evolving from the display device environment (represented by existing televisions) to the mobile environment. The mobile display corresponding to the personal display is similar to a home theatre; however, they are advantageous because they are small and have a relatively lower weight. Therefore, the display industry has an interest in diverse product applications of displays, reproducing more accurate colours, and offering improved image quality from display devices of various sizes. To address these interests, a psychophysical experiment was conducted in this research. The experiment compared the size of the colour stimulation corresponding to foveal vision by gradually increasing the lightness of the background. This was based on the assumption of possible differences in colours being recognized by the lightness of the background and the size of the colour stimulation. Contrary to the results of previous studies, where the colours are identified more clearly as the size of the colour stimulation increases (assuming that the lightness of the background is not considered) here the results of the experiment showed that the attributes of the identified colours were different depending on the lightness of the background and the size of the colour stimulation. Based on the experimental results, it is possible to resolve errors in colour conversion that can occur when the input image is switched from a large screen size to a mobile size display, and to reproduce the colours more accurately and improve the image quality.

Study on the brand personality of animation character and the consumer's personality (애니메이션 캐릭터의 브랜드개성과 소비자개성 연구 - 브랜드개성과 소비자개성의 일치성이 브랜드태도에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구 -)

  • The animation should be produced to attract the audience's interests. Its characters will have the intended personalities through the interactions with the audiences, discarding the attributes of the nature. These personalities form the brand identity when they are exposed visually and will be powerful brand assets which lead the animation industry to the high-value added products. The brand identity of the character, the brand assets, can be used for various products in form of licensing and is noted to make an affirmative leverage effect. In this regard, the author has conducted an empirical research on the animation characters from the viewpoint of the brand, adopting, in particular, the Brand Personality Scale (BPS), which is the output of J. Aaker's (1997) study on brand personality defined as the human properties in relation with the brand. In addition, this study determines the correlation among the animation, brand and consumers based on the Sirgy's study (1982) resulting in that the better the brand and the consumer's personality are matched, the more the brand attitude is improved. In consequence, it is found that the animation characters have three personality levels such as refinement/ability, integrity and interests. The consumer's personality is divided into the 'practical ego-image' and the 'ideal ego-image' in the survey, and the survey result shows that the brand personality of the animation character exists between them.

Concept Analysis of Health Inequalities using Hybrid Model (혼종 모형을 이용한 건강 불평등 개념분석)

  • This study was conducted to understand the conceptual definition and characteristics of health inequality. To accomplish this, we analyzed data collected from 14 participants as well as from available literature regarding health inequality using the hybrid model introduced by Schwartz-Barcott and Kim. We categorized health inequality into nine attributes in three dimensions. These dimensions included "target", "precede", and "result," corresponding to the target, cause and consequence of health inequality, respectively. Specifically, we define health inequality as individuals, families, communities, socio-economic, or geographically distinct demographic groups that are treated unfairly and result in several problems such as loss of quality of life, reduction of survival rate, or aggravation of a disease due to (i) poor treatment by a hospital (ii) irregular meals, (iii) desperate need for work (for money), (iv) expensive medical care costs, (v) qualitative differences in medical care by regional groups (vi) the lack of knowledge regarding disease (vii) and inadequate health care because of lack of time. As a result of this unfair treatment, human rights violation occurs. The major contribution from this paper is that we provide a guideline for establishing strategies to reduce health inequality by identifying the concept of health inequality. Based on this study, we recommend development of an educational program to reduce health inequalities.

Moderating Effect of Organization Performance Recognition on the Relationship between Job Value and Organization Value of Hospital Employees (병원종사자들의 직무가치와 직장가치 인식 간의 관계에 조직성과 자각상태의 조절효과)

  • This study aims to provide suggestions for effective human resource management at the organization level, by considering the psychological and behavioral attributes of hospital employees. Employees at 4 general hospitals, 5 hospitals, 7 convalescent hospitals, and 7 psychiatric hospitals were surveyed. A three-step model adjustment return analysis was performed using mean centering methods to the moderating effect of organizational performance recognition, for analyzing the relationship between job value and organization value. Assessing the relationship between job value and organization value revealed that awareness of customer response effort and awareness of hospital image has a moderating effect amongst hospital nurses. Considering the administrative employees of hospitals, awareness of customer response effort had negative moderating effect, whereas awareness of hospital image had positive moderating effect. In nurses of convalescent hospitals, awareness of customer response effort had positive moderating effect, but awareness of growth and competitiveness, and awareness of hospital image, had negative moderating effect. Taken together, our results indicate that depending on the hospital type and occupation, the effect of adjustment of organizational performance recognition when considering the relationship between job value and recognition of organization value by hospital employees, is varied.
