  • With recent rapid development of computer capabilities, various technologies that can facilitate the interaction between humans and computers are being studied. The paradigm tends to change to NUI using the body such as 3D motion, haptics, and multi-touch with GUI using traditional input devices. Various studies have been conducted on transferring human movements to computers using sensors. In addition to the development of optical sensors that can acquire 3D objects, the range of applications in the industrial, medical, and user interface fields has been expanded. In this paper, I provide a model that can execute other programs through gestures instead of the mouse, which is the default input device, and control Windows based on the lip motion. To propose a model which converges with an Android application and can be controlled by various media and voice instruction functions using voice recognition and buttons through connection with a main client. It is expected that Internet media such as video and music can be controlled not only by a client computer but also by an application at a long distance and that convenient media viewing can be performed through the proposal model.

  • This article proposes a design and implementation methodology of a gesture-based interface for augmented reality games. The topic of gesture-based augmented reality games is a promising area in the immersive future games using human body motions. However, due to the instability of the current motion recognition technologies, most previous development processes have introduced many ad hoc methods to handle the shortcomings and, hence, the game architectures have become highly irregular and inefficient This article proposes an efficient development methodology for gesture-based augmented reality games through prototyping a table tennis game with a gesture interface. We also verify the applicability of the prototyping mechanism by implementing and demonstrating the augmented reality table tennis game. In the experiments, the implemented prototype has stably tracked real rackets to allow fast movements and interactions without delay.

  • As various interfacing devices for computational machines are being developed, a new HCI method using hand motion input is introduced. This interface method is a vision-based approach using a single camera for detecting and tracking hand movements. In the previous researches, only a skin color is used for detecting and tracking hand location. However, in our design, skin color and shape information are collectively considered. Consequently, detection ability of a hand increased. we proposed primary orientation edge descriptor for getting an edge information. This method uses only one hand model. Therefore, we do not need training processing time. This system consists of a detecting part and a tracking part for efficient processing. In tracking part, the system is quite robust on the orientation of the hand. The system is applied to recognize a hand written number in script style using DNAC algorithm. Performance of the proposed algorithm reaches 82% recognition ratio in detecting hand region and 90% in recognizing a written number in script style.

  • The aim of this paper is to present the methodology for hand tracking and hand gesture recognition. The detected hand and gesture can be used to implement the non-contact mouse. We had developed a MP3 player using this technology controlling the computer instead of mouse. In this algorithm, we first do a pre-processing to every frame which including lighting compensation and background filtration to reducing the adverse impact on correctness of hand tracking and hand gesture recognition. Secondly, YCbCr skin-color likelihood algorithm is used to detecting the hand area. Then, we used Continuously Adaptive Mean Shift (CAMSHIFT) algorithm to tracking hand. As the formula-based region of interest is square, the hand is closer to rectangular. We have improved the formula of the search window to get a much suitable search window for hand. And then, Support Vector Machines (SVM) algorithm is used for hand gesture recognition. For training the system, we collected 1500 hand gesture pictures of 5 hand gestures. Finally we have performed extensive experiment on a Windows XP system to evaluate the efficiency of the proposed scheme. The hand tracking correct rate is 96% and the hand gestures average correct rate is 95%.

  • The use of gestures provides an attractive alternate to cumbersome interface devices for human-computer interaction. This has motivated a very active research area concerned with computer vision-based analysis and interpretation of hand gestures. The most important issues in gesture recognition are the simplification of algorithm and the reduction of processing time. The mathematical morphology based on geometrical set theory is best used to perform the processing. A key idea of proposed algorithm in this paper is to apply morphological shape decomposition. The primitive elements extracted to a hand gesture include in very important information on the directivity of the hand gestures. Based on this characteristic, we proposed the morphological gesture recognition algorithm using feature vectors calculated to lines connecting the center points of a main-primitive element and sub-primitive elements. Through the experiment, we demonstrated the efficiency of proposed algorithm. Coupling natural interactions such as hand gesture with an appropriately designed interface is a valuable and powerful component in the building of TV switch navigating and video contents browsing system.

  • This paper describes a computer vision system based on active IR illumination for real-time gaze discrimination system. Unlike most of the existing gaze discrimination techniques, which often require assuming a static head to work well and require a cumbersome calibration process for each person, our gaze discrimination system can perform robust and accurate gaze estimation without calibration and under rather significant head movement. This is made possible by a new gaze calibration procedure that identifies the mapping from pupil parameters to screen coordinates using generalized regression neural networks (GRNNs). With GRNNs, the mapping does not have to be an analytical function and head movement is explicitly accounted for by the gaze mapping function. Futhermore, the mapping function can generalize to other individuals not used in the training. To further improve the gaze estimation accuracy, we employ a reclassification scheme that deals with the classes that tend to be misclassified. This leads to a 10% improvement in classification error. The angular gaze accuracy is about 5°horizontally and 8°vertically. The effectiveness of our gaze tracker is demonstrated by experiments that involve gaze-contingent interactive graphic display.

  • Tangible Space is a new emerging interaction space with mobile AR/VR computing and ubiquitous computing environment with IoT. Tangible Space spans from a physical environment augmented with virtual entities to immersive virtual environments mirroring the physical environment. Interacting with Tangible Space is logged just like interacting with the Web. By webizing Tangible Space, we can gain persistence as a by-product so that human life experience in the physical environment can be logged and shared just like the information being created and shared in the current Web. The result is a powerful future direction of the web from a World Wide Web of Information to World Wide Web of Life experiences.

  • In this paper, we propose a new histogram based hand recognition algorithm for augmented reality. Hand recognition system makes it possible a useful interaction between an user and computer. However, there is difficulty in vision-based hand gesture recognition with viewing angle dependency due to the complexity of human hand shape. A new hand recognition system proposed in this paper is based on the features from hand geometry. The proposed recognition system consists of two steps. In the first step, hand region is extracted from the image captured by a camera and then hand gestures are recognized in the second step. At first, we extract hand region by deleting background and using skin color information. Then we recognize hand shape by determining hand feature point using histogram of the obtained hand region. Finally, we design a augmented reality system by controlling a 3D object with the recognized hand gesture. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm gives more than 91% accuracy for the hand recognition with less computational power.

  • This study deals with the issue of actual HCI design embodiment through the investigation on how to interpret and use visual expression means in HCI design in a semantic way. The purpose of this study is to provide the method by which designers can make the user-centered guidelines in HCI design. As a part of the user\ulcornercentered design approaches, this study is based on the understanding of user group types which are divided by his/her extent of exposure to computer especially and is focussed on applying the level of each group's apprehension of visual expression means to the embodiment of HCI design. Major findings of this study are: First, it proposes the 'Visual Tokens Models' as a basic source for the understanding and the embodiment of visual expression means in HCI design; Second, it has examined the correlations between the characteristics of Visual Tokens and user group types that is, naive users, casual users, and expert users; Third, it proposes guidelines for the user-centered embodiment of HCI design in accordance with the correlations.
