  • Despite the substantial increase of the elderly population in Korea, welfare policies such as housing programs have not been developed enough to meet the diverse needs of the aging people. Particularly, caring for elderly dementia patients is becoming a serious social problem in Korean society. Families are still primarily responsible for taking care of the elderly dementia patients, and thus are suffering from tremendous caregiving burdens. In many Western countries, group homes, which are small-scale care facilities with home-like atmosphere, have become common housing alternatives for elderly dementia patients. Group homes effectively create a therapeutic environment while helping reduce the elder care burdens for the families. This article proposes to review group homes as a housing option for the elderly with dementia in Korea. The purpose of this article is to make suggestions for housing policies, separately or as a part of more general welfare policies. Based on the questionnaire survey conducted on 912 persons currently residing in Seoul and five different provinces, various possible policies and suggestions to promote establishing group homes and other facilities for elderly dementia patients are discussed in this article.

  • Most elderly victims of senile dementia in Korea are cared for at home. This creates hardship for their families. Recent research suggests that the physical environment can affect the treatment of dementia. In light of these findings, a prudent approach to the design of the housing environment of family with dementia sufferers is advisable. This study aims to determine the design factors that need to be considered for the housing environment of dementia, particularly for those suffering from Alzheimer's or Cerebrovascular dementia. For this study, and in-depth qualitative investigation method was employed. Principal caregivers were interviewed using various investigative tools, including objective measures, structured and non-structured questionnaires. The investigation results suggest that the need for housing environment improvement varies with the severity and type of dementia. The housing needs in this study, is expected to promote a focus on improved design management for the environment and housing of dementia and their families. The results also suggest the establishment of a welfare policy for senile dementia victims and their families.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze environment-behavior concepts included in environmental design characteristics of facilities for elderly with dementia. Major method was contents analysis of actual environmental designs. For comparison between the environment-behavior concepts and actual cases, an analytical framework was developed. Eleven cases of facilities designed for people with dementia were analyzed. Those were published ones in periodicals in USA. The analytical data used included floor plans, texts, and visual materials including photographs. Under the framework for analysis, a total of 296 criteria were used to analyze the actual cases of environmental design. This study was expected to offer a knowledge base for better environmental design for elderly with dementia and to help establish guidelines for designing such facilities which can meet the cultural characteristics and traditional conditions of Korea.

  • Concerns about paid-facilities for the elderly with dementia from middle and upper class families have been discussed lately in Korea. Small-scale, home-like group homes for the elderly with dementia were developed in Sweden in the 1980, but they have not been effectively introduced in Korea where they remain a comparatively new concept. The group home, however, would provide a good alternative to Koreans who feel guilty when they have to leave their frail parents in large-scale facilities or hospitals instead of caring for them at home. The aim of this paper is, first, to define the care of the demented elderly who come from upper and middle class families in Korea and, secondly, to discuss the need for group homes to help care for them. A survey was done by questionnaire and was answered by 577 respondents who belonged to middle and upper class families living in Korea in December 2000. Methods of analysis were frequency, mean, and Chi-square. The results of this study were as follows: 1) the traditional notion that the eldest son should be burdened with the primary responsibility for a demented parent has weakened remarkably; 2) a small-scale long-term care facility was considered the most desirable living environment for the demented elderly; 3) the facilities families needed for professional hospitals for victims of dementia, senior citizen centers, large and small-scale long-term care facilities, day-care centers, and short-stay and service housing. The study also revealed that there was low awareness of the group home. The most preferred type of structure for group homes was a single-family detached house, and the most preferred management system was small-scale that could create home-like atmosphere. Additionally the respondents wanted group homes to consist of 6-8 residents with 2-4 persons per room. The results of this study strongly suggest that policy makers should encourage the development of smallscale group homes as an alternative form of housing for the elderly with dementia.

For this, researcher visited from June 20 to July 2 and collected data by observations of behavior of the elderly with dementia in common space(living room) and interviews with staff for the information about basic characteristics of the elderly with dementia and administration and operation of the facilities. The data were analyzed using the frequency and percentage. The results revealed as follows: first, the daily living activities of the elderly with dementia in common space tended to focus on self-concentration type and physical environment-interest type. Second, physical environmental -interest type. Second, physical environmental characteristics of common space affected space usage pattern of the elderly with dementia. • Snoezelen, multi-sensory stimulation, provides stimulation through the visual, aural, tactile, olfactory, gustatory and proprioceptive senses. Its aim is to be a relaxing, feeling of safety, novelty and stimulation with no expectations for performance. Agitated behavior of people with dementia causes significant problems and distress for cares. The objective of this research study was to test the effects of Snoezelen room on physical and verbal agitated behaviors of people with dementia. Four patients participated five sessions in Snoezelen room of 'F' dementia care facility in Sweden. Assessment instrument was basically used Cohen-Mansfield Agitation Inventory-Short Form to be rated by caregivers on a 5-point frequency scale. Pre-trial and post-trial assessments were carried out during $27^{th}$ Aug.-$27^{th}$ Sept. 2007. Result shows that Snoezelen room has some short-term positive effect on agitated behavior even though there was a considerable variation individuals responded. This result adds to the increasing evidence that Snoezelen could be a therapeutic environment for the elderly with dementia. Further research study, with larger number of participation, and a control group is required to establish more scientific evidence of Snoezelen effects on health outcome.

  • The major purpose of this study was to assess the physical living environment of two dementia care facilities to provide the guidelines and/or basic data for planning the facility. The instrument used in this study was a 17 page-checklist including 10 dimensions with 183 specific items developed by the researcher. The results of the study revealed that the overall mean score for 10 dimensions was 1.13(JK facility: 1.16 and BL facility: 1.10) explaining a little higher than average level in physical features. Among 10 dimensions, toilet & bathroom arrangements showed the highest mean assessment score(1.28), while common area showed the lowest mean score(0.8). The general conclusions and implications were made based on the results of the assessment.

For this study, contents analysis was conducted. Articles of four academic peer reviewed journals published from 1986 to 2005 were units of analysis. Using a keyword through library database systems, the articles were systematically selected. As results, trends of research according to 4 periods were defined. Among them as major trends, expansion of the quantity, expansion to interior design features for older persons, more facility types for dependent elderly(assisted living facilities, facilities for elderly with dementia, long term care facilities) have appeared. This result showed some directions and implications on elderly facility planning and development.
