Climate change impact on urban drainage system are analyzed in Seoul by using high-resolution climate change scenario comparing 2000s (1971~2000) with 2020s (2011~2040), 2050s (2041~2070) and 2080s (2071~2100). The historical hourly observed rainfall data were collected from KMA and the climate change scenario-based hourly rainfall data were produced by RegCM3 and Sub-BATS scheme in this study. The spatial resolution obtained from dynamic downscaling was $5{\times}5km$. The comparison of probability rainfalls between 2000s and 2080s showed that the change rates are ranged on 28~54%. In particular, the increase rates of probability rainfall were significant on 3, 6 and 24-hour rain durations. XP-SWMM model was used for analyzing the climate change impacts on urban drainage system. As the result, due to the increase of rainfall intensities, the inundated areas as a function of number of flooded manhole and overflow amounts were increasing rapidly for the 3 future periods in the selected Gongneung 1, Seocho 2, Sinrim 4 drainage systems. It can be concluded that the current drainage systems on the selected study area are vulnerable to climate change and require some reasonable climate change adaptation strategies.
In this study, rainfall quantile was estimated using scale invariance property of rainfall data with different durations and the applicability of such property was evaluated for the rainfall data of South Korea. For this purpose, maximum annual rainfall at 22 recording sites of Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) having relatively long records were used to compare rainfall quantiles between at-site frequency analysis and scale invariance property. As the results, the absolute relative errors of rainfall quantiles between two methods show at most 10 % for hourly rainfall data. The estimated quantiles by scale invariance property can be generally applied in the 8 of 14 return periods used in this study. As an example of down-scaling method, rainfall quantiles of $10{\sim}50$ minutes duration were estimated by scale invariance property based on index duration of 1 hour. These results show less than 10 % of absolute relative errors except 10 minutes duration. It is found that scale invariance property can be applied to estimate rainfall quantile for unmeasured rainfall durations.
The floods of Korea happens periodically during summer. The cause of heavy rain that provokes floods can be classified into typhoon and localized downpour. The typhoon happens in the tropical region. It causes one of the worst damage to Korea by extreme rainfall and strong wind. Usually, it is known that the flood damage by the typhoon is larger than that by the localized downpour. Therefore, this study classified rainfall events into typhoon events and localized downpour events based on the cause. Through statistical analyses of the rainfall data, this study investigated special quality of the rainfall during the time of typhoon. In analysis results, probability Precipitation calculated by the typhoon events were exposed bigger than that calculated by all rainfall events.
In case of groundwater recharge estimation using water table fluctuation method, specific yield affects the accuracy and confidence level of recharge rate. Nevertheless, there have been few studies on the method for the accurate estimation of specific yield in Korea. Specific yield estimated from the relationship between rainfall and groundwater levels is reasonable compared to the other methods. However, lots of factors such as artificial pumping, evapotranspiration by the plants, and a sudden increase in water levels by a heavy rainfall can affect the pattern of groundwater levels' fluctuation and make an over-estimated or under-estimated specific yield. This study obtained a reasonable specific yield by using a daily or 12 hourly average of rainfall and groundwater levels measured in a dry season.
Disaggregation techniques are widely used to transform observed daily rainfall values into hourly ones, which serve as important inputs for flood forecasting purposes. However, an important limitation with most of the existing disaggregation techniques is that they treat the rainfall process as a realization of a stochastic process, thus raising questions on the lack of connection between the structure of the models on one hand and the underlying physics of the rainfall process on the other. The present study introduces a nonlinear deterministic (and specifically chaotic) framework to study the dynamic characteristics of rainfall distributions across different temporal scales (i.e. weights between scales), and thus the possibility of rainfall disaggregation. Rainfall data from the Seoul station (recorded by the Korea Meteorological Administration) are considered for the present investigation, and weights between only successively doubled resolutions (i.e., 24-hr to 12-hr, 12-hr to 6-hr, 6-hr to 3-hr) are analyzed. The correlation dimension method is employed to investigate the presence of chaotic behavior in the time series of weights, and a local approximation technique is employed for rainfall disaggregation. The results indicate the presence of chaotic behavior in the dynamics of weights between the successively doubled scales studied. The modeled (disaggregated) rainfall values are found to be in good agreement with the observed ones in their overall matching (e.g. correlation coefficient and low mean square error). While the general trend (rainfall amount and time of occurrence) is clearly captured, an underestimation of the maximum values are found.

Determining design rainfall is the first step to plan an agricultural drainage facility. The objective of this study is to evaluate whether the current method for parameter estimation is reasonable for computing the design rainfall. The current Gumbel-Kendall (G-K) method was compared with two other methods which are Gumbel-Chow (G-C) method and Probability weighted moment (PWM). Hourly rainfall data were acquired from the 60 ASOS (Automated Synoptic Observing System) stations across the nation. For the goodness-of-fit test, this study used chi-squared (𝛘2) and Kolmogorov-Smirnov (K-S) test. When using G-K method, 𝛘2 statistics of 18 stations exceeded the critical value (𝑥2a=0.05,df=4=9.4877) and 10, 3 stations for G-C method, PWM method respectively. For K-S test, none of the stations exceeded the critical value (Da=0.05n=0.19838). However, G-K method showed the worst performances in both tests compared to other methods. Subsequently, this study computed design rainfall of 48-hour duration in 60 ASOS stations. G-K method showed 5.6 and 6.4% higher average design rainfall and 15.2 and 24.6% higher variance compared to G-C and PWM methods. In short, G-K showed the worst performance in goodness-of-fit tests and showed higher design rainfall with the least robustness. Likewise, considering the basic assumptions of the design rainfall estimation, G-K is not an appropriate method for the practical use. This study can be referenced and helpful when revising the agricultural drainage standards.

In this study, the applicabilities of flood risk indices using FVI from IPCC, PSR method from OECD, and DPSIR method from EEA, were analyzed. Normalized values of daily maximum rainfall, hourly maximum rainfall, ten minute maximum rainfall, annual precipitation, total days of heavy rainfall (more than 80mm/day), density of population, density of asset, DEM, road statistics, river maintenance ratio, reservoir capacity, supply ratio of water supply and sewerage, and pumping capacity were constructed from 2000 to 2015 for nationwide 113 watersheds, to estimate flood risk indices. The estimated indices were compared to 4 different types of flood damage such as the number of casualties, damage area, the amount of flood damage, and flood frequency. The relationships between flood indices and different flood damage types demonstrated that the flood index using the PSR method shows better results for the amount of flood damage, the number of casualties and damage area, and the flood index using the DPSIR method shows better results for flood frequency.
The heavy strom of July 26-28, 1996, which occurred over the Northern Kyungi Province and Western Kangwon Province, is analyzed to investigate the hydrometeorological characteristics and frequency of occurrences of the storm. The study region is limited to the watershed area of Hantan River on which the partially destructed Yeonchon Dam is located. Hourly rainfall data at 21 rain gauging stations in and near the Hantan river basin are collected and the cumulative rainfall mass curves constructed and compared each other to judge the credibility and consistency of rainfall data at nearby stations. In order to analyze the spatially moving characteristics of rain storm the isochrones based on real time are constructed using the several fixed-percentage cumulative rainfalls at the stations. The basin average rainfalls of various durations are computed for Yeonchon dam and the return period of July/1996 storm are evaluated based on the rainfall frequency curves at Cheolwon and Yeonchon rain gauging stations. A comparison is also made between the July/1996 storm and PMP of the region, which demonstrated the severity of the heavy storm.
This study was carried out to determine the distribution of factors as effected by debris flow in Ulsan and Pusan metropolitan areas because mainly debris flow caused by typhoons and local heavy rainfall events is mainly attributed to damage of human being ad property. The high risk degree of debris flow was to affected by east (20%), northeast (20%) and northwest (20%) slopes with stand age class with elevation (69%) of 100-200 (33%). Also, the risk was high in high erosion collapse degree with slope degree of $20-25^{\circ}$ with over 300 mm (100%) of maximum daily rainfall events and 50-100 mm (50%) or >100 mm (50%) of maximum hourly rainfall events with <5 km of stream path and <50 ha of catchment area. Landslide debris and wood residue flow was also related to igneous rocks (73%) and bank collapse types of debrs flow (57%).
From 2015 to 2021, high-concentration fine dust episodes with a daily average PM2.5 concentration of 50 ㎍ m-3 or higher were selected and classified into 3 types [long range transport (LRT), mixed (MIX) and Local emission and stagnant (LES)] using synoptic chart and backward trajectory analysis. And relationships between the fine particle data (PM2.5 and PM10 concentration and PM2.5/PM10 ratio) and meteorological data (PBLH, Ta, WS, U-wind, and Rainfall) were analyzed using hourly observation for the classification episodes on the Korean Peninsula and the Seoul metropolitan area (SMA). In LRT, relatively large particles such as dust are usually included, and in LES, fine particle is abundant. In the Korean peninsula, the rainfall was relatively increased centered on the middle and western coasts in MIX and LES. In the SMA, wind speed was rather strong in LRT and weak in LES. In LRT, rainfall was centered in Seoul, and in MIX and LES, rainfall appeared around Seoul. However, when the dust cases were excluded, the difference between the LRT and other types of air quality was decreased, but the meteorological variables (Ta, RH, Pa, PBLH, etc.) were further strengthened. In the case of the Korean Peninsula, it is difficult to find a clear relationship because regional influences (topographical elevation, cities and coasts, etc.) are complexly included in a rather wide area. In the SMA, it is analyzed that the effects of urbanization such as the urban heat island centered on Seoul coincide with the sea and land winds, resulting in a combination of high concentrations and meteorological phenomena.
