  • During hot stamping of hot-dip zinc-coated steel sheets such as hot-dip galvanized steel sheets and hot-dip galvannealed steel sheets, an oxide mainly composed of ZnO is formed on the sheet surface. However, excessive formation of ZnO can lead to a decrease in the amount of metal Zn in the coating layer, decreasing the corrosion resistance of hot-stamped members. Therefore, it is important to suppress excessive formation of ZnO. While the formation of Al oxides and Mn oxides along with ZnO layer during the hot stamping of hot-dip zinc-coated steel sheets can affect ZnO formation, crystal structures of such oxides have not been elucidated clearly. Thus, this study aimed to analyze structures of oxides formed during hot stamping of hot-dip galvannealed steel sheets using transmission electron microscopy. Results indicated the formation of an oxide layer comprising ZnAl2O4 at the interface between ZnO and the coating layer with Mn3O4 at the outermost of an oxide layer.

  • We investigated the toxicity of zinc and aluminum hot-dip galvanized sheet steel to abalone Haliotis discus hannai via changes in the gill and hepatopancreas using histological and transmission electron microscopy analysis. Experimental groups were composed of one control and four exposure conditions (direct or indirect exposure to zinc and aluminum hot-dip galvanized sheet steel). In the control group, aluminum exposure groups (direct and indirect), and indirect zinc exposure group, abalone mortality was not observed until the end of the experiment, and no histopathological changes were observed in the gill and hepatopancreas. However, the direct zinc exposure group exhibited 100% mortality. Ultrastructural analysis of the cytoplasm of ciliated and microvilli-bearing epithelial cells from gill filaments revealed electron-dense vesicles near the cell membrane and disruption of the nuclear membrane. We also observed swollen mitochondria and a loss of mitochondrial cristae. The hepatopancreas showed similar changes, and we detected highly electron-dense particles within the vesicles. These results suggest that abalone exposed directly to zinc hot-dip galvanized sheet steel experience acute toxicity, causing damage to cell organelles in the gill and hepatopancreas and, finally, inducing mortality.

  • Stainless steel has poor corrosion resistance in marine environment due to the breakdown of a passive film caused by chloride. It suffers electrochemical corrosion like pitting corrosion, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion crack (SCC) in marine environment. In general, it indicates that the passive film of $Al_2O_3$ has better corrosion resistance than that of $Cr_2O_3$ in seawater. This paper investigated the damage behavior 304 stainless steel and hot-dip aluminized 304 stainless steel in seawater solution. Various electrochemical experiments were carried out including potential measurement, potentiodynaimic experiment, Tafel analysis and galvanostatic experiment. As a result of anodic polarization experiment, higher pitting damage depth was indicated at 304 stainless steel than hot-dip aluminized 304 stainless steel. In addition, relatively higher corrosion current density was shown at hot-dip aluminized stainless steel as a result of Tafel analysis.

  • In this paper, the characteristics of a cavitation-erosion damage behavior on the STS 304 and hot-dip aluminized STS 304 under cavitation environment in sea water solution was investigated. The electrochemical experiments were carried out by potential measurement, anodic/cathodic polarization test, Tafel analysis, and also galvanostatic experiment in current density variables for the samples. The apparatus of cavitation-electrochemical experiment was manufactured in compliance with modified ASTM G-32 standard, with the conditions of sea water temperature of $25^{\circ}C$ and the measurement, amplitude of $30{\mu}m$. The damage behavior was analyzed by an observation of surface mophologies and a measurement of damage depth by a scanning electron microscope(SEM) and a 3D microscope, respectively, after electrochemical test. After polarization experiment under cavitation environment, much higher damage depths for the hot-dip aluminized STS 304 were observed comparing to the untreated STS 304. In addition, higher corrosion current density in hot-dip aluminized STS 304 presented than that of untreated STS 304 as a result of Tafel analysis.

  • Regular spangle hot dip galvanized steel sheets were made in the zinc bath containing a small amount of Al and with the addition of Pb, Sb, Sb-Mg, Sb-Cu and Bi respectively whose average glosses were measured. Zero-spangle hot dip galvanized steel sheets were also made by spraying a 2% $NH_4H_2PO_4$ solution on molten coating surfaces with exactly the same chemical compositions as above used for regular spangle and whose glosses and corrosion losses were also evaluated. For manufacturing zero- spangle hot dip galvanized steel sheets with high brightness, the zinc bath with 0.02%Sb and the spraying of a 2% $NH_4H_2PO_4$ solution were proposed and for better brightness and corrosion resistance, the zinc bath with 0.02% Sb-0.50%Mg and the spraying of a 2% $NH_4H_2PO_4$ solution were also proposed.

  • Coating of Hot-dip galvannealed steel consists of various Fe-Zn intermetallic compounds. Since the coating is hard and there for is very brittle, the surface of steel sheet is easy to be ruptured during second manufacturing processing. This is called as powdering. In addition, forming equipment might be polluted with debris by powdering. Therefore, various research have been carried out to prohibit powdering fur improving the quality of GA steel. This paper carried out finite element analysis combined with damage model which simulate the failure of local layer of hot-dip galvannealed steel surface during v-bending test. Since the mechanical property of intermetallic compound was unknown exactly, we used the properties calculated from measurements. The specimen was divided into substrate, coating layer and interface layer. Local failure at coating layer or interface layer was simulated when elemental strain reached a prescribed strain.

  • Hot-dip galvanizing process is used widely in industry to achieve corrosion resistant coatings. Poor drainage during this process often leads to problems such as icicle formation and bridging In this work, mild steel specimens were hot-dip galvanized. Influence of the addition of bismuth, aluminum and both (bismuth and aluminum) to the zinc bath on the zinc drainage were determined. Bismuth additions improved the drainage significantly. Zinc bath containing 0.1 wt.% Bi and 0.025∼0.05 wt.% Al showed uniformity of coatings. Industrial trials with this bath composition showed reduction in zinc consumption, reduction of ash and dross, and good luster of workpiece.

  • Interstitial-free (IF) steels are widely used for car body material. However, a few types of streaky mark defect are commonly found on hot dip galvannealed (GA) IF steel sheets. In the present study, both the phase structure of a streaky mark defect and the microstructure of the substrate just below it were characterized by optical microscopy (OM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). It was found that the bright streaky mark area was composed of ${\delta}$ phase while the dark normal area was full of craters. More than half of the grains at the uppermost surface of the substrate just below the streaky mark defect are unrecrystallized grains which could result from lower finish rolling temperature during hot rolling and be kept stable during the annealing process, while almost all the grains in the normal area are equiaxed grains. In order to confirm the effect of the unrecrystallized grains on the coating morphology, hot dip galvannealing simulation experiments were carried out in IWATANI HDPS. It is proved that the unrecrystallized grains accelerate the Fe-Zn reaction rate during galvannealing and result in a flatter coating surface and an even coating thickness. Finally, a formation mechanism of the streaky mark defect on the hot dip galvannealed IF steel sheet was discussed.

  • As the world's industrial development quickens, the highways and regional expressways have been expanding to serve the logistics and transportation needs of people. The burgeoning road construction has led to a growing interest in roadside installations. These must have reliable performance over long periods, reduced maintenance and high durability. Steel roadside barriers are prone to corrosion and other compromises to their functionality. Therefore, using high anti-corrosion steel material is now seen as a viable solution to this problem. Thus, the objective of this paper is to expand the scope of applications for high anti-corrosion steel material for roadside barriers. This paper assesses the impact safety such as structural performance, occupant protection performance and post-impact vehicular response performance by a simulation review on roadside barriers built with high strength anti-corrosion steel materials named as hot-dip zinc-aluminium-magnesium alloy-coated steel. The simulation test results for the roadside barriers built with high strength anti-corrosion steels with reduced sectional thickness meet the safety evaluation criteria, hence the proposed roadside barrier made by high strength and high anti-corrosion hot-dip zinc-aluminium-magnesium alloy-coated steel will be a good solution to serve safe impact performance as well as save maintenance cost.

  • The selective surface oxidation of a transformation-induced-plasticity (TRIP) steel containing 1.6 wt.% Mn and 1.5 wt.% Si during annealing at $800^{\circ}C$ was investigated for its influence on the formation of an inhibition layer during hot-dip galvanizing. The selective oxidation of the alloying elements and the oxide morphology were significantly influenced by the annealing atmosphere. The pure $N_{2}$ atmosphere with a dew point $-40^{\circ}C$ promoted the selective oxidation of Mn as a crystalline $Mn_{2}SiO_{4}$ phase, whereas the $N_{2}$ + 10% $H_{2}$ atmosphere with the same dew point $-40^{\circ}C$ promoted the selective oxidation of Si as an amorphous Si-rich oxide phase. During hot-dip galvanizing, the $Mn_{2}SiO_{4}$ phase was reduced more readily by Al in the Zn bath than the Si-rich oxide phase. Consequently, the pure $N_{2}$ atmosphere resulted in a higher formation rate of $Fe_{2}Al_{5}$ particles at the Zn/steel interface and better galvanizability than the $N_{2}$ + 10% $H_{2}$ atmosphere.
