Some materials exhibit a rising K-R curve, while the K-R curve for other materials is flat. The shape of the K-R curve depends on material behavior and, to a lesser extent, on the configuration of the cracked structure. The K-R curve for an ideally brittle material is flat because the surface energy is an invariant material property. However, the K-R curve can take on a variety of shapes when nonlinear material behavior accompanies fracture. Five different hot-rolled thin plates are tested to investigate K-R curve behavior. A special experimental apparatus is used to prevent specimens from buckling.
Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate)의 표면 형태가 생분해성에 미치는 영향을 조사하였다.
Textured bulk $YBa_2Cu_3O_x$ superconductors samples were grown directionally using different precursors of $YBa_2Cu_3O_x$ power. and a mixture of $YBa_2Cu_3O_5, BaCuO_2 and CuO$ powder. The microstructures and superconducting properties of the samples were compared. The mixture powder produced better microstructures i.e. dense and crack-free so that a higher critical current density was achieved at the same hot-zone temperature of 115$0^{\circ}C$ than the reacted powder does. When the reacted powder used as a precursor, as the hot-zone temperature increased upto 1215$^{\circ}C$, the texture of the sample improved and the critical current density increased. The amount of melt in the sample is of secondary importance for the growth of superconducting $YBa_2Cu_3O_x$ grains. The microstructures and superconductivity of good quality superconductors grown directionally were more strongly influenced by the kind of precursor rather than the amount og melt in a sample.
The purpose of this study is to determine the proper fillet weld size for the stiffeners on hull bottom plate of crude oil tanker. To achieve it, the effective notch stress and hot spot stress of the fillet weld with leg length specified in the rule were evaluated by using comprehensive FE analyses. Based on the results, the fatigue damages at each location of weld were calculated. Meanwhile the transitional behavior of initial welding distortion in the hull bottom plate under the design conditions was investigated by using a non-linear FEA. Welding distortion and residual stress introduced during fabrication process were considered as initial imperfections. According to FE analysis results, if the fillet leg length satisfies the design criteria of the classification society, the concern on the root failure at the fillet welds in the bottom hull plate during the design life can be negligible. In addition, considering the transitional behavior of the distortion during the service life, the fillet leg length should be minimized.
The reaction sintering of Al2O3-ZrO2-Nb composite has been investigated using Al2O3, and ZrAl2 powders. Two kinds of specimens, 78.3Al2O3-14.0Nb2O5-7.7ZrAl2 in wt.% (AZN-5) and 72.3Al2O3-13.8Nb2O5-7.5ZrAl2-6.4ZrO2(AZN-10), were prepared. Powder compacts were sintered at various temperatures between 1$600^{\circ}C$ and 1$700^{\circ}C$ for 30 min in Ar. DTA and X-ray analysis have showen that a reaction between Nb2O5 and ZrAl2 started at 149$0^{\circ}C$ to form Al2O3, ZrO2, and Nb. The sintered density increased with the sintering temperature. AZN-10 specimen showed higher density than AZN-5 specimen for almost all the experimental conditions. Al2O3-ZrO2-Nb composite hot pressed after reaction sintering showed higher toughness and lower hardness than hot pressed Al2O3-ZrO2. The crack propagated through many metallic Nb particles which showed plastic deformation, and this is the cause of the increase in toughness of Al2O3-ZrO2-Nb composite over Al2O3-ZrO2.
Continuous SiC fiber-reinforced SiC composites ($SiC_f$/SiC) were fabricated by electrophoretic deposition (EPD). Nine types of slurries with different powder contents, binder resin amounts and slurry pH were deposited on Tyranno$^{TM}$-SA fabrics by EPD at 135 V for ten minutes to determine the optimal conditions. Further EPD using the optimum slurry conditions was performed on fabrics with four different pyrolitic carbon (PyC) thicknesses. The density of the hot-pressed composites decreased with increasing PyC thickness due to the difficulty of infiltrating the slurry into the narrow gaps between the fibers. On the other hand, the mechanical strength increased with increasing PyC thickness despite the decrease in density, which was explained by the enhanced crack deflection with increasing PyC thickness. The $SiC_f$/SiC composites showed the highest density and flexural strength of 94% and 342 MPa, respectively, showing EPD as a feasible method for dense $SiC_f$/SiC fabrication.
Alumina coated SiC whiskers were prepared by homogeneous precipitation of aluminum sulfate. The Si3N4 composites reinforced with coated SiC whiskers were fabricated by hot-pressing at $1800^{\circ}C$ for 2 h under an $N_{2}$ atmosphere of 0.1 MPa to examine the effects of coated whiskers on the mechanical properties of SiC whisker reinforced $Si_{3}N_{4}$ composite. By the addition of alumina coated SiC whiskers instead of as received ones, the fracture toughness of composite was about 6.7 $MPam^{1/2}$ which was slightly lower than as received SiC whisker reinforced composite. This result seems to be caused by the fact that the crack deflection and whisker pull-out were decreased. Thus, alumina coated SiC whiskers were considered to form relatively strong interface bond with $Si_{3}N_{4}$ matrix.
This paper, we classified LED failure mechanisms that occur due to the delamination and analyzed each of the mechanism that gives the LED PKGs the effect. Usually, the LED is composed of several materials which are LED chips, gold wire, phosphor, epoxy resin, adhesive, reflector and lead frame. These different materials are usually delaminated in trouble conditions which are huge temperature difference, hot and humid or mechanical shocked. When the components are delaminated, a luminance will be lost and moisture be absorbed easily, a thermal resistance be increased attendantly. In this paper, we experimented to investigate failure mechanism of the thermal resistance and failure mechanism of the decrease of luminance that occur due to the delamination. A thermal shock test was performed to reproduce this phenomena by subjecting samples to a cold-hot cyclling process between $-30^{\circ}C$(15min) and $110^{\circ}C$(15min). The samples were inspected at 200, 600 and 1,000 cycles. We measured feature of LED using the spatial analyzer, optical microscope, thermal resistance, photometer, scanning electron microscope (SEM). As a result, the progression of the crack and the thermal resistance and decrease in luminance are proportional to number of thermal shock.
Al-Si coated boron steel has been widely used as commercial hot stamping steel. When the steel is heated at 900~930℃ for 5 min in an electric furnace, thickness of the coating layer increases as a consequence of formation of intermetallic compounds and diffusion layer. The diffusion layer plays an important roll in blunting the propagation of crack from coating layer to base steel. Change in microstructure and coating layer of Al-Si coated boron steel after conductive heating with higher heating rate than electric furnace has been investigated in this study. Conductive-heated steel showed the martensitic structure with vickers hardness of 505~567. Both intermetallic compounds in coating layer and diffusion layer were not observed in conductive-heated steel due to rapid heating. It has been found that the conductive-heating consisting of rapid heating to 550℃ which is lower than melting point of Al-Si coating layer, slower heating to 900℃, and then 1 min holding at 900℃ is effective in forming intermetallic compound in coating layer and diffusion layer.
AlN-BN ceramic composites were fabricated and their mechanical properties were investigated. The relative density of hot-pressed composites decreased with increasing BN content, but over $99\%$ could be obtained with 30 $vol\%$ BN in AlN. YAG was formed in the composites and monolithic AlN as a second phase by the reaction between $Y_2O_3$, added as sintering aid, and $Al_2O_3$. As expected, Vickers hardness and Young's modulus decreased with increasing BN content. The three-point flexural strength also showed similar behavior decreasing from 500 MPa of monolith down to 250 MPa by the addition 30 $vol\%$ BN. However, interestingly, the standard deviation of the strength values decreased significantly as BN was added to AlN. As a result, the Weibull modulus of the AlN-30 $vol\% BN composite was 21.3, which was extremely high. Fractography and crack path studies revealed that BN platelets induced grain pull-out and crack bridging in a bigger scale during crack propagation. Consequently, fracture toughness increased as more BN was added, reaching 4.5 $MPa\sqrt{m}$ at 40 $vol\%$ BN.
