  • As the wave impinges on and overtops the structure, a large highly aerated region is created in front of the structure and water splashs on top of the structure. The broken wave in front of the structure and associated green water on top of the structure are highly aerated containing not only a large number of bubbles but also very large sizes of bubbles. In this paper, the velocity field of the highly aerated region and the splashing water on the top is measured using a modified PIV method incorporating the traditional PIV method with the shadowgraphy technigue by correlating the ' texture ' of the bubble images. The velocity fields of a plunging wave impacting on a structure in a two-dimensional wave flume is measured. It is found that the maximum fluid particle velocity in flout of the structure during the impinging process is about 1.5 times the phase speed of the wave, while the maximum horizontal velocity above the top is less than the phase speed, It is also found that the dam breaking solution does not work well in predicting the green water velocity.

  • Usually shell and tube heat exchangers are employed to recover energy between fluids. Recently, numerous papers on these heat exchangers have been published; however, the velocity and temperature profiles or comparison of the features of the flow with or without inside tubes have rarely been described. In this research, experimental and numerical studies were carried out to investigate the characteristics of the flow around the spiral baffle plates without inside tubes in a horizontal circular tube using a particle image velocimetry method and ANSYS 14.0~15.0 version (Fluent). The results showed that swirling flow was produced between the spiral baffle plates. The tangential components were strong between the two spiral baffles; however, the axial or radial velocities components were indicating nearly zero. From the spiral motion in the space of the two baffles, it is considered that there were no dead zones between the spiral baffle.

  • The characteristics of heat transfer from horizontal cylinder immersed in both a riser and downcomer of a circulating fluidized beds were investigated experimentally under different values of solids mass flux, superficial air velocity, particle size diameter, and different bed materials. The test results indicated that local heat transfer coefficients in both riser and downcomer are strongly influenced by angular position, and mass flux, as well as by particle size and bed materials. The local heat transfer coefficients around a circumference of the cylinder inside a riser and downcomer of a CFB exhibited a general tendency to increase with decreasing particle size and increasing solids mass flux and vary with different bed materials. Also the averaged heat transfer coefficient calculated from local heat transfer coefficient exhibited the same trend as a local i.e increase with decrease particle size and increasing solids mass flux and vary with varying bed materials. The general trend for a riser local heat transfer coefficient is decrease with increase angle until ${\Phi}$ = 0.5-0.6 (Where at angle =180$^{\circ}$ ${\Phi}$ =1). Also the general trend for a local heat transfer coefficient in downcomer is to increase with increase the angle until ${\Phi}$= ${\theta}/{\Pi}$ = 0.3-0.5 (Where at angle =180$^{\circ}$ ${\Phi}$ =1). Comparison the results of the heat transfer in the riser and downcomer of a circulating fluidized beds shows that they have approximately the same trend but the values of heat transfer coefficients in riser is higher than in downcomer.

  • The line width of circuits in semiconductor devices continues to decrease down to a few nanometers. Since nanoparticles attached to the patterned wafer surface may cause malfunction of the devices, it is crucial to remove the contaminant nanoparticles. Physical cleaning that utilizes momentum of liquid for detaching solid nanoparticles has recently been tested in place of the conventional chemical method. Dropwise impaction has been employed to increase the removal efficiency with expectation of more efficient momentum exchange. To date, most of relevant studies have been focused on drop spreading behavior on a horizontal surface in terms of maximum spreading diameters and average spreading velocity of drop. More important is the local liquid velocity at the position of nanoparticle, very near the surface, rather than the vertical average value. In addition, there are very scarce existing studies dealing with microdroplet impaction that may be desirable for minimizing pattern demage of the wafer. In this study, we investigated the local velocity distribution in spreading liquid film under various impaction conditions through the CFD simulation. Combining the numerical results with the particle removal model, we estimated an effective cleaning diameter (ECD), which is a measure of the particle removal capacity of a single drop, and presented the predicted ECD data as a function of droplet's velocity and diameter particularly when the droplets are microns in diameter.

  • A homogeneous flow field including more than 2000 spherical particles was directly simulated. Particles are settling by gravity with the Reynolds number ranging from 50 to 300, based on diameter and slip velocity. Particular attention was focused on the distribution of particles. The Reynolds-number dependence, influences of particle rotation and loading ratio, and the dynamics of particle clusters are discussed. In the higher Reynolds number case, the wake attraction causes particle clusters and the average drag coefficient decreases significantly. Non-rotating particles maintain cluster structure and rotating ones moves randomly in the horizontal direction. It is because of the difference in the direction of the lift force.

  • An experimental study is performed to investigate unsteady mixed convection in a horizontal channel with a heat source. Particle image velocimetry (PIV) with thermo-sensitive liquid crystal (TLC) tracers is used for visualization and analysis. This method allows simultaneous measurement of velocity and temperature fields at a given instant of time. Quantitative data of the temperature and velocity are obtained by applying the color-image processing to a visualized image, and neural network is applied to the color-to-temperature calibration. It is found that the periodic flow of mixed convection in a cavity appears at very low Reynolds numbers (Re<0.4), and the period decreases with increasing Reynolds numbers and increases with increasing aspect ratio.

  • An experimental investigation was performed to study the characteristics of ER(Electro-Rheological) fluid flow in a horizontal rectangular tube with or without D.C voltage. To determine some characteristics of the ER flow, 2D PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry) technique is employed for velocity measurement. This research found the mean velocity distribution with 0kV/mm, 1.0kV/mm and 1.5kV/mm for Re = 0, 0.62, 1.29 and 2.26. When the strength of the electric field increased, the cluster of ERF are clearly strong along the test tube and the flow rate decreased. In this study, the rheology of ER fluid stagnating or flowing through a dispersion meter will be investigated by PIV method. And then the ER effect, which appears at the ER valves and their appliance will be visualized.
