Recently, composite materials have been mainly used in the main wings, ailerons, and fuselages of aircraft and rotor blades of helicopters. Composite materials used in rapid moving structures are subject to impact by hail, lightning, and bird strike. Such an impact can destroy fiber tissues in the composite materials as well as deform the composite materials, resulting in various problems such as weakened rigidity of the composite structure and penetration of water into tiny cracks. In this study, experiments were conducted using a 2 kW halogen lamp which is most frequently used as a light source, a 2 kW near-infrared lamp, which is used for heating to a high temperature, and a 6 kW xenon flash lamp which emits a large amount of energy for a moment. CFRP composite sandwich panels using Nomex honeycomb core were used as the specimens. Experiments were carried out under impact damages of 1, 4 and 8 J. It was found that the detection of defects was fast when the xenon flash lamp was used. The detection of damaged regions was excellent when the halogen lamp was used. Furthermore, the near-infrared lamp is an effective technology for showing the surface of a test object.

In this study, a satellite payload module was optimized by considering local stabilities. As design constraints in the satellite structure, local instabilities such as wrinkling, dimpling, crippling for honeycomb structures and crippling failure mode for beams were considered in addition to frequency and stress constraints. The constraints for the local instabilities (uncommon in general structures) were taken for the optimization of a satellite structures under severe launching environments. The analysis was performed combining the finite element analysis and optimization program. From the optimization results, it was found that frequency, crippling and wrinkling were the most critical constraints to achieve the design goals. Also, the importance of each design variable was estimated. Finally, the optimum design of the payload module was achieved for various design constraints and design parameters.

The research of graphene, a monolayer of carbon atoms with honeycomb lattice structure, has explosively increased after appeared in 2004. As a result, its high transmittance, mobility, thermal conductivity, and outstanding mechanical and chemical stability have been proved. Especially, many researches were executed about the field of transparent electrode highlighting material of substituting the indium tin oxide (ITO). In addition, qualitative and quantitative improvements have been achieved due to many synthesis methods were discovered. Among them, mostly used method is chemical vapour deposition of graphene grown on copper or nickel. The transmittance, mobility, sheet resistance, and other many properties are completely changed according to these two types of synthesis method of graphene. In this research, considering the difference of characteristics as the synthesis method of graphene, what types of graphene should be used and how to use it were studied. The stacked graphene harvested on copper and multi-layer graphene harvested on nickel were compared and analyzed, as a result, the transmittance of 90% and the sheet resistance of $70{\Omega}{\square}$ was showed even though stacked graphene layers were 4 layers. The reason that could bring these results is lowered sheet resistance due to stacked monolayer graphenes. Moreover, light output power of the three stacked graphene spreading layer shows the highest value, but light-emitting diode with multi-layer graphene died out from 12mA due to also its high sheet resistance. Therefore, we need to clarify about what types of graphene and how to use the graphene in use.

Eight under 2 micron size fractions of the montmorillonite from Jugjeonri area, Gyeongsanbug-do, were studied and then this result has been compared with data from Yongdongri area. Montmorillonites occurring at the same stratigraphic horizon in each area show limited variation in chemical composition, but shows some degree of differences in exchangeable cation compositions and total layer charges of montmorillonites from Jugjeonri to Yongdongri area. In general, samples from Jugjeonri show higher amount of exchangeable Na and layer charge due to relatively higher substitution of Mg for Al in octahedral sites than those from Yongdongri area. But Their dehydroxylation endothermic peaks of the samples from both areas are abnormal type with a small range of variation of peak temperature. This variation seems to reflect tetrahedral substitution of AI for Si for samples from Yongdongri whereas samples from Jugjeonri do not show shuch a tendency. However, samples from Jugjeonri proved to be relatively higher dehydroxylation peak temperatures than those of the other. DSC data for sample from Jugjeonri also show that divalent-cation saturated montmorillonite have relatively a higher endothermic heat capacities than monovalent-cation saturated one as shown in previous work. Two different morphologies of montmorillonites, honeycomb structure and closely packed intergrowth, by SEM were observed in samples from both areas but the later one is common. The scalloped type is relatively abundant in the sample from Yongdongri than the other. The dominant habit by TEM are irregularly shaped foliated aggregates and platy shaped particles. In general, foliated aggregates which are easy to disperse are relatively abundant in the samples from Jugjeon compared with those from Yongdongri area.

In this work, optimization of two-stage shock absorption system for lunar lander has been carried out. Because of complexity of impact phenomena of shock absorption system, a 1-D constitutive model is proposed to describe the behavior of shock absorption system. Quadratic polynomial regression meta-model is constructed by using a commercial software ABAQUS with the proposed 1-D constitutive model, and sequential approximate optimization of two-stage shock absorption system has been carried out along with the constructed meta-model. Through the optimization, it is verified that landing impact force on lunar lander can be considerably reduced by changing the cell size and foil thickness of honeycomb structure in two-stage shock absorption system.

The satellite thermal control H/W composed of two parallel channels working for heat pipe (HP) and phase change material (PCM) is suggested for the high heat dissipating component which works intermittently with short duty. In a limited point of view, the HP-PCM device is a kind of off-the-shelf component that requires no dedicated configuration and thermal designs to PCM. Therefore, it can be used with less impact on the program cost and schedule different from most of the PCM applications. In present study the typical honeycomb structure radiator applying the HP-PCM device is designed and the detail thermal math model is developed for numerical analyses. The result comparison between without and with PCM shows that the HP-PCM device redistributes the peak heat around the whole mission period through the alternate melting and freezing of PCM, and, as a result, the maximum and minimum temperatures are effectively alleviated. The drawback of PCM application due to low thermal conductivity can be successfully resolved by means of parallel arrangement of HP channel.

Recently, atomically smooth hexagonal boron nitride(h-BN) known as a white graphene has drawn great attention since the discovery of graphene. h-BN is a III-V compound and has a honeycomb structure very similar to graphene with smaller lattice mismatch. Because of strong covalent sp2bonds like graphene, h-BN provides a high thermal conductivity and mechanical strength as well as chemical stability of h-BN superior to graphene. While graphene has a high electrical conductivity, h-BN has a highly dielectric property as an insulator with optical band gap up to 6eV. Similar to the graphene, h-BN can be applied to a variety of field, such as gate dielectric layers/substrate, ultraviolet emitter, transparent membrane, and protective coatings. However, up until recently, obtaining and controlling good quality monolayer h-BN layers have been too difficult and challenging. In this work, we investigate the controlled synthesis of h-BN layers according to the growth condition, time, temperature, and gas partial pressure. h-BN is obtained by using chemical vapor deposition on Cu foil with ammonia borane (BH3NH3) as a source for h-BN. Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy (STEM, JEOL-JEM-ARM200F) is used for imaging and structural analysis of h-BN layer. Sample's surface morphology is characterized by Field emission scanning electron microscopy (SEM, JEOL JSM-7100F). h-BN is analyzed by Raman spectroscopy (HORIBA, ARAMIS) and its topographic variations by Atomic force microscopy (AFM, Park Systems XE-100).

Recently, hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN), which is III-V compound of boron and nitride by strong covalent sp2 bonds has gained great interests as a 2 dimensional insulating material since it has honeycomb structure with like graphene with very small lattice mismatch (1.7%). Unlike graphene that is semi-metallic, h-BN has large band gap up to 6 eV while providing outstanding properties such as high thermal conductivity, mechanical strength, and good chemical stability. Because of these excellent properties, hBN can potentially be used for variety of applications such as dielectric layer, deep UV optoelectronic device, and protective transparent substrate. Low pressure and atmospheric pressure chemical vapor deposition (LPCVD and APCVD) methods have been investigated to synthesize h-BN by using ammonia borane as a precursor. Ammonia borane decomposes to polyiminoborane (BHNH), hydrogen, and borazine. The produced borazine gas is a key material that is a used for the synthesis of h-BN, therefore controlling the condition of decomposed products from ammonia borane is very important. In this paper, we optimize the decomposition of ammonia borane by investigating temperature, amount of precursor, and other parameters to fabricate high quality monolayer h-BN. Synthesized h-BN is characterized by Raman spectroscopy and its absorbance is measured with UV spectrophotometer. Topological variations of the samples are analyzed by atomic force microscopy. Scanning electron microscopy and Scanning transmission Electron microscopy are used for imaging and analysis of structures and surface morphologies.
The development of new materials is an essential key for unraveling the environmental and energy problems all over the world. Among the various application materials in this area, crystalline and two-dimensional carbon materials have been studied from points of view such as electrical conductivity, chemical stability, and surface engineering due to the assembly of honeycomb and sp/sp2 hybridization structure. Novel two-dimensional materials, including graphene and graphyne, have been continuously reported for several decades to develop in renewable energy fields. Also, various pristine/engineered two-dimensional carbon allotropes have been researched to combine metal nanoparticles in the form of a sphere, cubic, and so on. The renewable energy performance to apply for these materials is drastically increased. In this review, we introduce the research points of the 2D carbon allotrope materials, graphene and graphyne, and applications to improve the performance of renewable energy applications.
This study was performed to establish analysis methods, and evaluated for grayanotoxin in domestic/foreign honey and wild honey. The molecular weight of grayanotoxins I, II and III, excluding grayanotoxin III that has been commercialized, were analyzed by LC-MS/MS. Then, the molecular structure of grayanotoxins I and II were analyzed by NMR. A total 111 samples (25 Korean honey, 21 Korean wild honey, 13 Korean honeycomb honey, 44 foreign honey, 8 foreign wild honey) were examined to determined whether or not each sample contained grayanotoxins I, II, and III. The honey samples were mixed with methanol and loaded into a tC18 cartridge, the filtrate was diluted with water, and the mixture was then analyzed by ESI triple-quadrupole LC-MS/MS. Grayanotoxins were only found in the foreign wild honey and were not detected in Korean honey, Korean honeycomb honey, or Korean wild honey. Three of the samples contained grayanotoxin I, II, and III, and one sample contained only grayanotoxins I and III. The lowest level for grayanotoxin I was 3.13 ${\pm}$ 0.00 mg/kg, and the highest level was 12.93 ${\pm}$ 0.01 mg/kg. The levels of grayanotoxin II were 0.84 ${\pm}$ 0.01 mg/kg, 0.92 ${\pm}$ 0.00 mg/kg and 1.08 ${\pm}$ 0.01 mg/kg, respectively. The lowest level of grayanotoxin III was 0.25 ${\pm}$ 0.01 mg/kg and the highest level was 3.29 ${\pm}$ 0.74 mg/kg. Through this study, safety management for foreign wild honey has been enabled.
