  • $SnO_2-(1-x)P_2O_5-xB_2O_3$ glass system were prepared by melt-quenching technique in the compositional series containing 50, 55 and 60 mol% of $SnO_2$. Local structure of the glasses was investigated by Raman and FT-IR measurements. A large glass-forming region was found at the phosphate side of the ternary system with homogeneous glasses containing up to 5~25 mol% of $B_2O_3$. According as content of $B_2O_3$ increases, theraml expansion coefficient of glass decreased but transition temperature and softening temperature increased. Because these phenomenon changed local structure of glass. According as content of $B_2O_3$ increases, quantity of bridging oxygen increased. Also, according as content of $SnO_2$ increases, confirmed that quantity of non-bridging oxygen increases.

  • The effect of the surface treatments on the high temperature properties of the Inconel 617, one of the promising candidate alloys for high temperature heat-transport system, has been studied. Various surface modification methods including a rapid thermal process(RTP), a hydrothermal treatment, and a physical vapor deposition($2{\mu}m$ thick TiAlN film by an arc discharge) were applied to the Inconel 617. The morphological and the structural properties of the surface-modified Inconel 617 samples after heat treatment at $1000^{\circ}C$ in the air were compared to find out whether inhomogeneous formation of $Cr_2O_3$ crust at the surface region was suppressed or not. TiAlN-coated Inconel 617 showed homogeneous microstructure and the lowest wear loss compared to bare, RTP- and hydrothermally-treated Inconel 617 by suppressing the $Cr_2O_3$ crust formation.

  • The complex interactions of climate, topography, geology, biota and hwnan activities result in the land cover patterns, which are impacted by natural disturbances such as fire, earthquake and flood. Natural disturbances disrupt ecosystem communities and change the physical environment, thereby generating a new landscape. Community ecologists believe that disturbance is critical in determining how diverse ecological systems function. Fires were once a major agent of disturbance in the North American tall grass prairies, African savannas, and Australian bush. The major focus of this research was to develop stochastic model of spatial process of disturbance or spatial events and simulate the process based on the developed model and it was applied to the fire arrival process in the Great Victoria Desert of Australia, where wildfires generate a mosaic of patches of habitat at various stages of post-fire succession. For this research, Landsat Multi-Spectral Scanner(MSS) data covering the period from 1972 to 1994 were utilized. Fire arrival process is characterized as a spatial point pattern irregularly distributed within a region of space. Here, nonhomogeneous planar Poisson process is proposed as a model for the fire arrival process and rejection sampling thinning the homogeneous Poisson process is used for its simulation.

  • We report a 54-year-old woman who presented with a well-defined, homogeneous, and non-enhancing mass in the retrobronchial region of the bronchus intermedius. The patient underwent endobronchial ultrasound-guided transbronchial needle aspiration (EBUS-TBNA) for histological confirmation. Serous fluid was aspirated by EBUS-TBNA. Cytological examination identified an acellular smear with negative microbiological cultures. The patient was finally diagnosed with bronchogenic cysts by chest computed tomography (CT) and EBUS-TBNA findings. However, 1 week after EBUS-TBNA, the patient developed bronchogenic cyst rupture and pneumonia. Empirical antibiotics were administered, and pneumonia from the bronchogenic cyst rupture had resolved on follow-up chest CT. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of pneumonia from bronchogenic cyst rupture after EBUS-TBNA.

  • Ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs) are an unusual galaxy population. They are ghostlike galaxies with fainter surface brightness than normal dwarf galaxies, but they are as large as MW-like galaxies. The key question on UDGs is whether they are 'failed' giant galaxies or 'extended' dwarf galaxies. To answer this question, we study UDGs in massive galaxy clusters. We find an amount of UDGs in deep HST images of three Hubble Frontier Fields clusters, Abell 2744 (z=0.308), Abell S1063 (z=0.347), and Abell 370 (z=0.374). These clusters are the farthest and most massive galaxy clusters in which UDGs have been discovered until now. The color-magnitude relations show that most UDGs have old stellar population with red colors, while a few of them show bluer colors implying the existence of young stars. The stellar masses of UDGs show that they have less massive stellar components than the bright red sequence galaxies. The radial number density profiles of UDGs exhibit a drop in the central region of clusters, suggesting some of them were disrupted by strong gravitational potential. Their spatial distributions are not homogeneous, which implies UDGs are not virialized enough in the clusters. With virial masses of UDGs estimated from the fundamental manifold, most UDGs have M_200 = 10^10 - 10^11 M_Sun indicating that they are dwarf galaxies. However, a few of UDGs more massive than 10^11 M_Sun indicate that they are close to failed giant galaxies.

  • In this paper, we present a novel segmentation method that can extract new foreground objects from a current frame in real-time. It is performed by detecting differences between the current frame and reference frame taken from a fixed camera. We minimize computing complexity for real-time video processing. First DCT (Discrete Cosine Transform) is utilized to generate rough binary segmentation maps where foreground and background regions are separated. DCT shows better result of texture analysis than previous methods where texture analysis is performed in spatial domain. It is because texture analysis in frequency domain is easier than that in special domain and intensity and texture in DCT are taken into account at the same time. We maximize run-time efficiency of DCT by considering color information to analyze object region prior to DCT process. Last we use Guided filter for natural matting of the generated binary segmentation map. In general, Guided filter can enhance quality of intermediate result by incorporating guidance information. However, it shows some limitations in homogeneous area. Therefore, we present an additional method which can overcome them.

  • Total Body Irradiation(TBI) is one of the essential treatment modalities in bone marrow transplantation for leukemia and lymphoma. Various techniques and dose regimens were introduced with sevelal advantages and disadvantages. In TBI, lung block could reduce lung dose to 75% of original beam for decreasing lung dose with homogenous total body irradiation. Accurate provision for specified dose and the desired homogeneity are essential before clinical total body irradiation. When performed in total body irradiation, the problem obtain uniform dose distribution in brain, neck, lung, umbilicus, pelvis and leg. Authors compared to dose distribution with method 1 and method 2. The method 1 used compensating filters for homogeneous dose distribution(Minesota University Method). The method 2 used fixing frame made in aeryl developing authors. Results were following. 1. Method 1 was showed dose distribution from 95.6% to 100%, method 2 showed dose distribution from 95.4% to 100%. 2. Method 2 was showed different to 3.4% at skin region and midline in the brain. In the neck, showed different to 1.5%. In the umbilicus. showed different to 2.3%.

  • Accurate dose calculation in radiation treatment planning is most important for successful treatment. Since human body is composed of various materials and not an ideal shape, it is not easy to calculate the accurate effective dose in the patients. Many methods have been proposed to solve the inhomogeneity and surface contour problems. Monte Carlo simulations are regarded as the most accurate method, but it is not appropriate for routine planning because it takes so much time. Pencil beam kernel based convolution/superposition methods were also proposed to correct those effects. Nowadays, many commercial treatment planning systems, including Pinnacle and Helax-TMS, have adopted this algorithm as a dose calculation engine. The purpose of this study is to verify the accuracy of the dose calculated from pencil beam kernel based treatment planning system Helax-TMS comparing to Monte Carlo simulations and measurements especially in inhomogeneous region. Home-made inhomogeneous phantom, Helax-TMS ver. 6.0 and Monte Carlo code BEAMnrc and DOSXYZnrc were used in this study. Dose calculation results from TPS and Monte Carlo simulation were verified by measurements. In homogeneous media, the accuracy was acceptable but in inhomogeneous media, the errors were more significant.

  • We performed comprehensive quality control for eddy-covariance measurements from 3 farmland sites and 1 industrial site adjacent to Nakdong river. The quality control program is based on Foken and Wichura (1996) and Vicker and Mahrt (1997) and we added criteria for trend and standard deviation for scalar variables and modified criteria for non-stationarity condition of Foken and Wichura (1996) to consider random error of fluxes. The classification of data quality is designed for the raw data and the processed flux data, separately. Use of added criteria efficiently reduces the number of outlier for water vapor and $CO_2$ fluxes and use of modified criteria for non-stationarity reduces the number of outlier for scalar fluxes and increases the number of data with accepted quality for further work. Energy balance ratio is higher in farmlands than industrial site, which is due to neglect of heat storage term in industrial site. Among farmland sites, C4 site shows higher energy balance ratio than other sites. This is due to more homogeneous surface of C4 site than other farmland sites. However, energy balance ratio is very low or even negative at night. Mismatch between the flux footprint and the other energy component footprint over the heterogeneous surface is main cause for energy imbalance at night. Other possible causes are also discussed.

  • Clustering is one of the most well-known unsupervised learning methods that clusters data into homogeneous groups. Clustering has been used in various applications and FCM is one of the representative methods. In Fuzzy C-Means(FCM), however, cluster centers tend leaning to high density areas because the Euclidean distance measure forces high density clusters to make more contribution to clustering result. Previously proposed was density-independent clustering method, where cluster centers were made not to be close each other and relived the center deviation problem. Density-independent clustering method has a limitation that it is difficult to specify the position of the cluster centers. In this paper, an enhanced density-independent clustering method with an additional term that makes cluster centers to be placed around dense region is proposed. The proposed method converges more to real centers compared to FCM and density-independent clustering, which can be verified with experimental results.
