  • The mechanisms of pretilt angle generation in nematic liquid crystal (NLC) with negative dielectric anisotropy on a rubbed polyimide (PI) surface for homeotropic alignment were studied. The pretilt angle of negative type NLC was smaller than that of the positive type NLC for all rubbing strength regions on the rubbed PI surface. The pretilt angle generated in NLC does not attributable to steric interaction between the fluorine moiety of NLC and the polymer surface on the rubbed PI surface. Consequently, the mechanism of the pretilt angle generation for homeotropic alignment is different from the one for homogeneous alignment.

  • In this paper, we have improved a novel ECB mode using bend structure with high tilt angle in the unique condition by Hot plate equipment. The new control of tilt angle for nematic liquid crystal (NLC) with negative and positive dielectric anisotropy on the rubbed homeotropic polyimide (PI) using baking method by Hot plate equipment was investigated. LC tilt angle decreased with increasing baking temperature and time. We suggest that the development of the novel ECB cell using control of tilt angle on the homeotropic surface is a promising technique for the achievement of fast response time and high contrast ratio.

  • The effect of liquid crystal (LC) alignment on a homeotropic polyimide (PI) surface induced by ion beam (IB) irradiation and rubbing process was studied. LC alignment was not affected by IB irradiation with an exposure time of 10 s, and an IB irradiation with an exposure time of 60 s more effectively oriented the LCs on the PI layer than the rubbing process. It was assumed that the LC alignment depended on the C-O bonds created from the C=O bonds on the PI surface broken by IB irradiation after an exposure time of 60 s, which resulted in a strong surface energy that transformed the homeotropic LC alignment to homogeneous states.

  • In this paper, we investigated the vertical alignment characteristics of liquid crystals (LCs) on fluorinated self-assembled monolayers (FSAMs). For comparison, a commercialized homeotropic polyimide (PI) layer was used as an LC alignment layer. We confirmed the successful deposition of FSAMs and the change of FSAMs before and after rubbing treatment through contact angle measurement and atomic force microscopy. The optical transmittance spectrum of the FSAMs is similar to that of the homeotropic PI layer, which is a superior optical characteristic applicable to LC devices. When FSAMs were applied to the vertically aligned (VA) LC cell, uniform and vertical LC alignments were achieved. In addition, the voltage-transmittance characteristic of VA LC cell with FSAMs was superior to that of VA LC cell with the conventional homeotropic PI layers. These results indicate that the FSAMs are suitable as the homeotropic LC alignment layer for enhanced LC devices.

  • The mechanisms of pretilt angle generation for a nematic liquid crystal (NLC) with negative dielectric anisotropy on the blended polyimide (PI) surface containing trifluoromethyl moiety was studied. High LC pretilt angle on the blended polymer surface with F3 was measured and the pretilt angle increased with rubbing strength. However, the low LC pretilt angle on the blended polymer surface with F1 and F2 was measured. The high LC pretilt angle generated is attributable to trifluoromethyl moiety in backbone structure on the blended PI surface. Therefore, the high pretilt angle of NLC can be achieved by using the blended polymer surface.

  • The control of tilt angle for nematic liquid crystal (NLC) with negative and positive dielectric anisotropy on the rubbed homeotropic polyimide (PI) using baking method by hot plate equipment was investigated. LC tilt angle decreased with increasing baking temperature and time. Especially, the low LC tilt angle of positive type NLC ($\Delta\varepsilon$ >0) on the rubbed homeotropic PI surface by increasing temperature and time was measured. The tilt angle of positive type NLC ($\Delta\varepsilon$ >0) is smaller than that of the negative type ($\Delta\varepsilon$ >0) on rubbed PI with increasing baking temperature and time. We consider that the tilt angle of NLC is decreased due to increasing the steric interaction between horizon component of permittivity $\varepsilon$ = of NLC and the stress of polymer side chain by high temperature.

  • We studied the state of the dual liquid crystal (LC) alignment which displays both homeotropic and homogeneous alignment on blended polyimide (PI) layer. The research was conducted using rubbing method at different imidizing temperatures and the blended PI was made using homeotropic PI having an alkyl side chain and homogeneous PI without the side chain. The uniform LC alignments were achieved, and have thermal stability. The results of contact angles were similar to that of pretilt angles.

  • A homeotropic liquid crystal (LC) alignment state on rubbed fluorinated self-assembled monolayers (FSAMs) is described according to alkyl chain length. A simple procedure, gas-phase method, for the preparation of FSAM was used. The average optical transmittance in the visible light range of FSAMs were 76.63% to 78.21%, which were superior to the conventional polyimide layer having a transmittance of 75.89%. In addition, the excellent homeotropic LC alignment characteristics of FSAMs were observed through pretilt angle measurement and polarized optical microscope images. By measuring the contact angles and the surface energies of FSAMs, it was confirmed that pretilt angles of LC molecules increased according to the alkyl chain length. High optical transparency and uniform homeotropic LC alignment characteristics of FSAMs showed the possibility of FSAMs as an LC alignment layers.

  • We studied the electro-optical (EO) performance in the vertical-alignment (VA) - l/4$\pi$ cell photoaligned with polarized UV exposure on a homeotropic photopolymer surfaces. Excellent voltage-transmittance curve in the VA - l/4$\pi$ cell photoaligned with polarized UV exposure for 3 min on the photopolymer containing cholesterol group of 8% can be achieved. The V-T characteristics in the VA-l/4$\pi$ cell photoaligned on the photopolymer surface can be improved by increasing cholesteryl group. For response time measurement, the transmittance characteristics of the VA-l/4$\pi$ cell photoaligned on the photopolymer surface was better than that of the VA-l/4$\pi$ cell rubbingaligned on a polyimide(Pl) surface.
