  • Objectives: It is hard to accumulate research data on adolescents' suicide, because friends and family of the suicide completers might be reluctant to share the experience. To overcome the lack of information on adolescent suicide victims, the authors examined the risk and protective factors for adolescents' suicide from a character in a novel. Methods: Krystal, an adolescent female in the novel The Casual Vacancy by Joanne Rowling, failed to overcome her unfortunate circumstances and committed suicide. The authors analysed Krystal's case based on the guideline for patients with suicidal behaviours to address the complicated situation of her death. Results: Krystal grew up in a poor and dangerous environment. Despite the environmental hardships, she developed ego maturation with affectionate help from Mr Fairbrother, an assistant coach of the Girls' Rowing Team and a parish councillor. The sudden passing away of Mr Fairbrother brought on a crisis of identity for Krystal. In addition, a villainous character raped her and her brother drowned to death, which brought her great sorrow. She felt helpless and committed suicide. Conclusion: In spite of many risk factors for suicide, Krystal was able to keep her life with a few protective factors, a younger brother in the home, and a sense of responsibility for the family. After the loss of her brother, however, she collapsed in a moment. Krystal's suicide might not only be a personal choice but a breakdown of the social protection system for the youth.

  • This study is aimed at exploring the experience of couples choosing not to have children after marriage. To identify the motives for voluntary childlessness and social perceptions, a qualitative research method was used for analysis. After in-depth interviews were conducted with 15 childless couples who had agreed to participate in the research, 15 meaning units, 5 categories, and 3 topics were established. The research findings were categorized as follows: 'the motives for being childless', 'the surrounding response and coping response', and 'the expectation of a childless family's society.' The research participants argued that families without children should be fully accepted in the changing society, with the hope that their childlessness would be respected. The significance of this study is that it focused on the perceptions of families and society, while steering away from personal views on the meaning of a life absent of children. Based on the perception that childlessness is not only a personal matter but also a social issue, this study clearly showed a variety of reactions to childless couples, such as the labeling of them as eccentric people and disapproval of them. Furthermore, this study has elaborated on the personal experience of childless couples by clearly indicating their desires to seek government support and compensation.

  • From the perspectives of traditional Korean familism, the family was a life-giving and morality-building institution. The family was also a location where people of Chosun society developed an identity as humans. Due to these characteristics of the family in the traditional familism, that is, the family as the basis of life, morality, and identity, the family was a unit that transcends personal desires, thus the institution enjoyed a long-lasting stability. However, with industrialization, the transcendent values have been taken away from the family, and the modern Korean family has changed into a private unit of personal happiness and the interests of only the immediate members. Surely the traditional familism had values that are contradictory to the civil society, such as sexual discrimination and family egoism. In spite of the limits, the traditional familism contains some family values that can be utilized to improve today's family cultures in Korea. For example, the approach to the family as a unit for life, the emphasis on transcending personal interests for the sake of family stability and deep intimacy, and the importance of the family in human lifes could inspire today's Korean families.

Students like dishes cooked with deep frying method and western foods. With these results, menu of school food services become more westernized and using more frying methods because of students' taste preference. • The aim of this study was to achieve an understanding of the experiences of divided families in South Korea. The study adopted a qualitative method based on the interpretive science paradigm The participants were 14 elderly people who came from North Korea around 1950 and identified as belonging to the first generation of divided families. In-depth individual interviews were carried out, focusing on what divided families experienced after leaving their hometown, how these experiences affected their meaning-making about their homecoming, and how the divided community has changed. The result of theme analysis indicated that the first generation of divided families identified themselves as "people who lost their hometown." their hometown implied multiple losses, including their family members, socioeconomic status, and psychological support systems. The participants explained the process of their settlement and adaptation to South Korea based on the cohesion of the divided family community. However, they anticipated that the divided family community would fade away because of the aging of the first generation, the indifference of the second generation, and the frustration that existed about the reunion of the divided family members. The participants showed a realistic view on returning to their hometown after the reunification of North Korea and South Korea.

  • This paper serves to analyze discourses on concubine at the beginning of the modernization era or during the enlightenment period of Korea. For this analysis, the estimated time frame of the enlightenment period will be from 1860 through the time when Korea was annexed into Japan, which was in 1910. The discourses appeared in newspapers and Shinsoseol which are the text of this study have been analyzed with the qualitative research technique. The major conclusions that are derived from the study are as follows: First, intellectuals during enlightenment period of Korea, criticizing concubinage, tired to establish the monogamous relationship and they argued that it should be the prior condition for Korea to enter into the civilized society. Second, the concubinage was criticized in the point of the newly established view. The criticism was on double sex ethics, applying different ethical standards to men and women and the prohibition of wifes jealousy of concubine. Third, intellectuals during enlightenment period of Korea were tried to do away with concubinage by enforcing the discrimination between wife and concubine. But the efforts resulted in making concubinage personal problems. Also consciousness based confucian ethics including female virtues was forced to be followed in ordinary affairs while concubinage was criticized in the point of the view of western ethics based consciousness. The huge differences between two ethics consciousness resulted in serious conflicts in family.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate the factors influencing suicidal ideation in middle school students. Methods: Suicidal Ideation Questionnaire (SIQ) results, personal characteristics, child abuse experiences, and stress were obtained from a sample of 657 middle school students from 3 conveniently selected schools in S city. Results: Suicidal ideation of participants was positively correlated with child abuse experience, stress, psychosomatic symptoms, antisocial personality and depressive tendencies, whereas sociability and self-esteem were negatively correlated with suicidal ideation. Significant factors influencing suicidal ideation included an antisocial personality tendency, stress related to the family environment, mental abuse, gender (female), depressive trend, running away from home, sociability, and stress related to academic performance. These factors explained 39.9% of the variance. Conclusion: These results suggest that earlier screening and intervention programs for depression and stress in middle school students will be helpful in reducing suicidal ideation. Further studies are needed in which other strategies that could prevent suicidal ideation in middle school students are examined.

  • In this paper we choose the best model among several bivariate Poisson models on Korean soccer data. The models considered allow for correlation between the number of goals of two competing teams. We use an R package called bivpois for bivariate Poisson regression models and the data of K-league for season 1983-2012. Finally we conclude that the best fitted model supported by the AIC and BIC is the bivariate Poisson model with constant covariance. The zero and diagonal inflated models did not improve the model fit. The model can be used to examine home-away effect, goodness of fit, attack and defense parameters.
