Colloids are a heterogeneous system in which particles of a few nanometers to hundreds micrometers in size are finely dispersed in liquid medium, but show homogeneous properties in macroscopic scale. They have attracted much attention not only as model systems of natural atomic and molecular self-assembled structures but also as novel structural materials of practical applications in a wide range of areas. In particular, recent advances in colloidal science have focused on nano-bio materials and devices which are essential for drug discovery and delivery, diagnostics and biomedical applications. In this review, first we introduce nano-bio colloidal systems and surface modification of colloidal particles which creates various functional groups. Then, various methods of fabrication of colloidal particles using holographic lithography, microfluidics and virus templates are discussed in detail. Finally, various applications of colloids in metal inks, three-dimensional photonic crystals and two-dimensional nanopatterns are also reviewed as representative potential applications.
Motility contrast imaging is a coherence-domain imaging technique that uses cellular motility as a fully endogenous imaging contrast agent. Motility is measured inside tissue using a digital holographic coherence gate that extracts dynamic speckle from fixed depths. The dynamic speckle arises from the normal organelle motion inside cells, and from the movement of the cellular membranes driven by the cytoskeleton. It measures cellular activity and the effects of temperature and osmolarity. Motion is sensitive to cytoskeletal drugs, such as the antimitotic drugs used for cancer chemotherapy, and the effects of drug combinations also can be monitored. Motility contrast imaging is a potential tissue-based assay platform for highthroughput screening of pharmaceuticals.

Novel liquid crystalline malonic ester monomers were synthesized from malonyl dichloride and mesogenic alcohols as a photoresponsive group. The monomers were polymerized with aliphatic or aromatic dibromides in the presence of sodium hydride to give 8 kinds of novel poly(malonic esters) with two symmetrical azobenzene groups. We found that the resulting polymer films could be used as rewritable optical data storage (or holographic image) media through a photoisomerization of azobenzene group by Ar laser irradiation. The sensitivity of data recording was dependent not only on the thickness of the polymeric thin film but also on the intensity of laser beam.

This paper describes current work regarding two EC funded projects, MUTED and HELIUM3D whose objective is to produce an autostereoscopic display system which is well suited to domestic television applications. Both of these projects have common roots in a previous EC funded project (ATTEST) and both employ laser illumination and viewer head tracking.
Recently, the next-generation advanced flow visualization techniques such as holographic PIV, dynamic PIV, echo-PIV, micro/nano-PIV, and X-ray PIV have been introduced. These advanced measurement techniques have a big potential as the core technology for analyzing outmost thermo-fluid flows in future. These would be indispensable in solving complicated thermo-fluid flow problems not only in the industrial fields such as automotive, space, electronics, aero- and hydro-dynamics, steel, and information engineering, but also in the research fields of medical science, bio-medical engineering, environmental and energy engineering etc. Especially, NT (Nano Technology) and BT (Bio Technology) strongly demand these advanced measurement techniques, because it is impossible for conventional measurement methods to observe most complicated nano- and bio-fluidic phenomena. In this presentation, the basic principle of these high-tech flow visualization techniques and their practical applications which cannot be resolved by conventional methods, such as blood flows in a micro-tube, in vivo analysis of micro-circulation, and flow around a living body will be introduced as a blue ocean strategy.
Recently, several advanced flow visualization techniques such as Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) including stereo PIV, holographic PIV, and dynamic PIV have been developed. Recently microscale biofluid flows have been receiving large attention in various research areas. However, most conventional imaging techniques are unsatisfactory due to difficulties encountered in the visualization of microscale biological flows. Recent advances in optics and digital image processing techniques have made it possible to develop several advanced micro-PIV/PTV techniques. They can be used to get quantitative velocity field information of various biofluid flows from visualized images of tracer particles. In this paper, as new advanced micro-PIV techniques suitable for biofluid flow analysis, the basic principle and typical applications of the time-resolved micro-PIV and X-ray micro-PIV methods are explained. As a 3D velocity field measurement technique for measuring microscale flows, holographic micro-PTV method is introduced. These advanced PIV/PTV techniques can be used to reveal the basic physics of various microscale biological flows and will play an important role in visualizing veiled biofluid flow phenomena, for which conventional methods have many difficulties to analyze.
Very decisive progress was made in advancing fundamental POL-IN-SAR theory and algorithm development during the past decade. This was accomplished with the aid of airborne & shuttle platforms supporting single -to-multi-band multi-modal POL-SAR and also some POL-IN-SAR sensor systems, which will be compared and assessed with the aim of establishing the hitherto not completed but required missions such as tomographic and holographic imaging. Because the operation of airborne test-beds is extremely expensive, aircraft platforms are not suited for routine monitoring missions which is better accomplished with the use drones or UAVs. Such unmanned aerial vehicles were developed for defense applications, however lacking the sophistic ation of implementing advanced forefront POL-IN-SAR technology. This shortcoming will be thoroughly scrutinized resulting in the finding that we do now need to develop most rapidly POL-IN-SAR drone-platform technology especially for environmental stress-change monitoring with a great variance of applications beginning with flood, bush/forest-fire to tectonic-stress (earth-quake to volcanic eruptions) for real-short-time hazard mitigation. However, for routine global monitoring purposes of the terrestrial covers neither airborne sensor implementation - aircraft and/or drones - are sufficient; and there -fore multi-modal and multi-band space-borne POL-IN-SAR space-shuttle and satellite sensor technology needs to be further advanced at a much more rapid phase. The existing ENVISAT with the forthcoming ALOSPALSAR, RADARSAT-2, and the TERRASAT will be compared, demonstrating that at this phase of development the fully polarimetric and polarimetric-interferometric modes of operation must be viewed and treated as preliminary algorithm verification support modes and at this phase of development are still not to be viewed as routine modes.
