  • A Holographic data storage has some advantage of fast transmission, short access time and high storage capacity. However, it has several problems such as inter-symbol interference, inter-page interference and misalignment. Especially, for multi-level holographic data storage system, since one pixel contains more than 1bit, the system is more vulnerable to the error. In this paper, we propose a 3/4 modulation code which mitigate inter-symbol interference for 4-level holographic data storage.

  • Holographic data storage (HDS) features short access times, high storage capacities, and fast transfer rates since the data is recorded and read not by lines but by pages within a volume of holographic material. Furthermore, a single pixel can store more than 1 bit if it is multi-level. However, there is a problem of inter-symbol interference (ISI) between the adjacent symbols if the level difference between neighboring symbols is large. Hence, one should avoid side by side placement of the smallest level symbol and the largest level symbol in any direction. This paper proposes a 12/16 modulation code for 4-level holographic data storage, so that the largest symbol is 3 and the smallest symbol is 0, in order to reduce the ISI.

  • Variations of temperature field in a Hele-Shaw convection cell (HSC) were measured using a holographic interferometry with varying Rayleigh number. Experimental results show a steady flow pattern at low Rayleigh numbers and a time-dependent periodic flow at high Rayleigh numbers. Especially, the period of oscillation at Ra = 6.35 $\times$ 10$^{6}$ was 62 seconds. Two different measurement methods of holographic interferometry, double-exposure method and real-time method, were employed to measure the temperature field variations of HSC convective flow. In the double-exposure method, unwanted waves can be eliminated and reconstruction images are clear, but transient flow structure cannot be observed clearly. On the other hand, transient flow can be observed and reconstructed well using the real-time method. However, the fringe patterns reconstructed by the real-time method contain more noise, compared with the double-exposure method. The two holographic interferometer techniques employed complementary in this study were proved to be useful fur analyzing the temperature field variations of unsteady thermal fluid flows.

  • In this paper, the demonstration of a 130-channel optical demultiplexer based on the cascaded volume holographic gratings is presented. By serially adding the second holographic grating, which has different grating period, slant angle, and center wavelength compared to those of the first grating, the operating wavelength range of the optical demultiplexer could be expanded, and therefore, the number of channels of the holographic demultiplexer is increased by twice. As a result of the experiment, a 0.4-nm-spaced demultiplexer with the channel uniformity of 3.5 dB, the 3dB-bandwidth of 0.12nm, and the channel crosstalk of -20dB is experimentally achieved.

  • Holographic optical elements (HOEs) provide systems of thin-film optics that could include a variety of functions and have many advantages as optical devices in various research fields. Research and developments based on the use of HOEs in the fields of communications and displays are in progress. This paper introduces the properties of HOEs and their applications in diffractive optical elements (DOEs), holographic projection screens, and head-mounted displays (HMDs). For widespread use of HOE technology in these various applications some challenges need to be solved, as discussed in this paper.

  • At the present time when the limits of the magnetic storage systems appear, the holographic data storage (HDS) devices with high data transfer rate and high recording density are emerging as attractive candidates for next-generation optical storage devices. In this paper, to effectively improve the detection performance that is degraded by the two-dimensional inter-symbol interference under the HDS channel environment and the pixel misalignment, an iterative two-dimensional equalization scheme is proposed based on the contraction mapping theorem. In order to evaluate the performance of the proposed scheme, for various holographic channel environments we measure the BER performance using computer simulation and compare the proposed one with the conventional threshold detection scheme, which verifies the superiority of the proposed scheme.

  • Two-dimensional photonic quasicrystal (PQCs) template patterns have been fabricated on a $1.1{\mu}m$-thick DMI-150 photoresist using a multiple-exposure holographic method. A 442-nm HeCd laser was utilized as a light source and the holographic exposure was carried out at a fixed angle of $\theta=6^{\circ}$. After the first holographic exposure, the sample was rotated to a proper angle and the second exposure was performed to the same manner. This exposure process was repeated n/2 times to obtain n-fold symmetric PQC patterns and then the sample was developed. The fabricated PQCs exhibited 8, 10 and 12-fold rotational symmetry and the diffraction patterns using a 632.8-nm HeNe laser were observed for n-rotation symmetry corresponding n-fold PQCs. The fabricated PQC template patterns were examined using scanning electron microscopy(SEM). Transmission spectra were measured fourier transform infrared(FTIR) spectrometer.

  • In this paper we propose a binocular holographic three-dimensional (3D) imaging system using optical scanning holography. To realize a binocular 3D holographic imaging system, we could acquire the complex holograms of a real object after designing a holographic display system based on interpupillary distance and pupil size, and these holograms could be optically reconstructed following numerical signal processing with an amplitude spatial light modulator. The proposed binocular 3D holographic imaging system using optical scanning holography was verified experimentally.

  • Since holographic data storage has the advantage of high recording density and data transfer rate, it is a candidate for the next generation storage systems. However, Holographic data storage system is affected by interpage interference and two dimensional intersymbol interference. Also, burst error occurs by physical impact. In this paper, we propose an LDPC product code using modified log-likelihood ratio and extrinsic information to correct burst error and improve performance of holographic data storage. The performance of proposed LDPC product code is 0.5dB better than that of the conventional LDPC code.

The fabricated PQCs exhibited 8, 10 and 12-fold rotational symmetry, which was in a good agreement with the interference simulation results. In addition, the diffraction patterns with n-rotation symmetry were observed for the corresponding n-fold PQCs. We believe that the multiple-exposure holography is a good method to fabricate the mesoscale PQCs with a high rotational symmetry.
