  • Background: Breast cancer is by far the most frequent cancer of women (23 % of all cancers), ranking second overall when both sexes are considered together. Contralateral breast cancer (CBC) is becoming an important public health issue because of the increased incidence of primary breast cancer and improved survival. The present communication concerns a study to evaluate the role of various clinico-pathological factors on the occurrence of contralateral breast cancer. Materials and Methods: A detailed analysis was carried out with respect to age, menopausal status, family history, disease stage, surgery performed, histopathology, hormone receptor status, and use of chemotherapy or hormonal therapy. The diagnosis of CBC was confirmed on histopathology report. Relative risk with 95%CI was calculated for different risk factors of contralateral breast cancer development. Results: CBC was found in 24 (4.5%) out of 532 patients. Mean age of presentation was 43.2 years. Family history of breast cancer was found in 37.5% of the patients. There was statistically significant higher rate (83.3%) of CBC in patients in age group of 20-40 years with RR=11.3 (95% CI: 1.4, 89.4, p=0.006) seen in 20-30 years and RR=10.8 (95% CI:1.5-79.6, p=0.002) in 30-40 years as compared to older age of 60-70 years. Risk of development was higher in premenopausal women (RR=8.6, 95% CI: 3.5-21.3, $p{\leq}0.001$). Women with family history of breast cancer had highest rate (20.9%) of CBC (RR=5.4, 95% CI: 2.5-11.6, $p{\leq}0.001$). Use of hormonal therapy in hormone receptor positive patients was protective factor in occurrence of CBC but not significant (RR=0.7, 95% CI: 0.3-1.5, p=0.333). Conclusions: Younger age, premenopausal status, and presence of family history were found to be significant risk factors for the development of CBC. Use of hormonal therapy in hormone receptor positive patients might be protective against occurrence of CBC but did not reach significance.

  • Background: This study was planned as comparative and descriptive in order to measure and evaluate the knowledge and attitudes regarding early diagnosis of women with and without a family history of cervical cancer. Materials and Methods: The study sample consisted of the relatives of female patients (N=253) who were admitted to Istanbul University of Medicine. Women with a family history of cervical cancer formed the case group, while those without family history of cervical cancer constituted the control group. Two distinct data collection tools, a questionnaire and the Miller Behavioral Style Scale (MBSS), were used in order to obtain data for evaluation with SPSS for Windows 20.0 statistics package program. Results: It was found that 61.0% of the case group with family history of cervical cancer and 19.0% of the control group without family history of cervical cancer were using early diagnostic methods. Thus the presence of an individual with cervical cancer in the family affected the attitudes towards early diagnosis. It was further found that the level of knowledge on cervical cancer and PAP smear test was higher in the case group, which was more sensitive with regard to being informed about cervical cancer as compared to general society. However, the average MBSS scores were not significantly different compared to the control group. Conclusions: It was noted that, women participating this study knowledgeable, but this did not necessarily transform into better behavior.

  • The very first statistics department in Korean universities was founded in 1962, meaning it has been 57 years since Korean academia has regarded statistics as a wholly independent field of study. Dr. Junbo Kim was the first faculty member hired by Korea University's statistics department. He made a seminal contribution to the development and publication of statistics textbooks in those early years, and in 1971, spearheaded the efforts to found the Korean Statistical Society, serving as its first president. Naturally, Dr. Kim's significant contributions have laid the cornerstones for the advancement of statistics as an independent field of study in Korea. In this paper, I will explore two main subjects: one is the early history of the Korean Statistical Society with a special emphasis on Dr. Kim's contributions, and the other is an analytical overview his publications. Specifically, I will focus on Modern Statistics: A Synthesis of Statistics and Estimates』(Kim, 1954), and 『Inferential Statistics: An Introduction to Sample Survey and Experimental Design』(Kim, 1956).

  • Background: Previous studies have generated conflicting evidence regarding associations between family history and survival after gastric cancer surgery. In this study, we investigated this question using a meta-analysis. Materials and Methods: To identify relevant studies, PubMed and Embase databases were searched up to June 2013. Two reviewers independently assessed search results and data extraction of included studies. Hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for overall survival (OS) were calculated based on fixed- or random-effects models. Homogeneity of effects across studies was assessed using $x^2$ test statistics and quantified by $I^2$. Results: A total of five studies were selected according to the inclusion criteria. The total number of patients included was 2,030, which ranged from 145 to 598 per study. There was no significant difference in OS by family history of cancer (HR=0.83, 95%CIs=0.50-1.38), but subgroup analysis of patients with a first-degree family history of cancer (HR=0.74, 95%CIs=0.60-0.93) and gastric cancer family history (HR=0.56, 95%CIs=0.41-0.76) tended to show better OS in these patients. Conclusions: This meta-analysis suggests that a first-degree family history of cancer or gastric cancer family history is associated with better survival of gastric cancer patients after surgery, after a systematic review of five previous studies. These results can be applied by clinicians when counselling patients regarding their risk of death from gastric cancer. Further study is needed to investigate the underlying mechanism between family history and survival in gastric cancer patients.

  • This paper is to survey the research process and the problems in statistics of The Chronicle of Korea Fishery. The contents of The Chronicle were researched by two groups. One group is the managers of every province, the other group is the officers of every county. The managers performed the literature investigation research and field study and also arranged the reports from the county officers. But the managers seemed not to pay the full attention about the consistency of contents. The main contents about fishery are the number of coastal households and population, the number of fishery households and population, the number of fishing boats and fishing net. The body of The Choronicle and the table of fishing affairs in the appendages must be carefully compared to use the statistics. Though these statistics lack the consistency, the number of fishery households and boats deserves the attention. The fishing households account for less than 3% of all households, and about one third of fishing households has fishing boat.

  • Compression history detection plays an important role in digital multimedia forensics. Most existing works, however, mainly focus on digital image and video. Additionally, the existed audio compression detection algorithms aim to detect the trace of double compression. In real forgery scenario, multiple compression is more likely to happen. In this paper, we proposed a detection algorithm to reveal the compression history for MP3 audio. The statistics of the scale factor and Huffman table index which are the parameters of MP3 codec have been extracted as the detecting features. The experimental results have shown that the proposed method can effectively identify whether the testing audio has been previously treated with single/double/triple compression.
