Who Would Care for Post-Imperial Broken Society?: Harold Pinter's The Caretaker

  • An analogical reading of socio-historical context of Harold Pinter's The Caretaker employs some postcolonial discursive analyses of postimperial British capitalistic interests in their post war reconstruction. It is also concerned with causes of so-called broken society. The Caretaker dramatizes minimal actions: a tramp is invited by the elder brother; a job as caretaker is offered; he is reluctant to accept the first offer by the elder brother, but is willing to the second by the younger; eventually, he is excluded because he makes noises while dreaming. These trivial actions produce serious and critical speech acts with their socio-historical implications. The tramp Davies is socially and thereby existentially excluded from the centre of the cold, banished to even colder peripheries. The audience face to the question. Why is Davies excluded? This study tries to answer the question, uncovering deep-rooted capitalistic racism, and reading its symptoms. Even after 50 years The Caretaker was staged, post-imperial broken society tries to operate the betrayals of disparity between the cause and effect of what has gone wrong. Pinter confirms that the action of the play takes place in a house in west London. With the city of London as its capitalistic centre, British imperialism lavished much of its wealth which has only served sectional interests dividing people against themselves. Pinter dramatizes the root of broken society. On the one hand, Pinter foregrounds the very general conflicts between individuals and forms of power; on the other hand, he underlies the very specific strategies of socio-historical exploitation, domination and exclusion.

  • Since 2006, heated debates have taken place on both sides of the Pacific over the historical accuracy of Yoko Kawashima Watkins's So Far from the Bamboo Grove, the "historical novel" that depicts the author's painful escape from the just-liberated Korean peninsula to Japan. This study re-visits the controversies that fired up not only the whole Korean society but also not a few Americans and the American press. However, unlike most previous Korean studies on this novel, this study mostly focuses on both the responses of Korean feminists and those of Americans and the American press to the issue. This paper argues that the Korean feminists, who criticized their male compatriots for their feverish reaction, have the same problem as their compatriots, that is, the problem of seeing through a binary perspective that drowns or blurs individual differences. A similar framework is found operating in the Boston Globe's articles on the same issue. This study proceeds to discuss the pitfalls of liberalism underlying the American parents' and the American civil organizations' defence of Watkins and analyzes their poor historical awareness. The conclusion of this study is that So Far from the Bamboo Grove, dictated by an ideological prolepsis, erroneously inscribes the Cold War in the geographical space of the pre-Cold-War Korean peninsula and, as a result, symptomatically participates in the United States' anti-Communist world view.

  • This study is a case study of system improvement measures for urban regeneration of the historical and cultural environment. The example areas are Hwangnam and Inwang Hanok districts in Gyeongju City, which operate various systems to solve the urban decline problem caused by the historical and cultural environment regulations. The subjects of this study are resident support programs and district unit planning systems under the advanced promotion system established in the case area. As research methods, literature studies, field surveys, and in-depth interviews were conducted. Through this, the background and purpose of introduction of each system, major plan contents, and problems of the system application process were analyzed. This study drew the following implications through case studies. First, in order to more effectively promote the urban regeneration of the historical and cultural environment, it is necessary to improve the related systems in an integrated and systematic manner. Second, in order to resolve the policy distrust of local residents in the historical, cultural and environmental management system, a wider variety of planned alternatives to narrow the difference in interests between the public and private sectors should be presented.

HOME SWEET HOME IN VÕ PHIẾN'S TUỲ BÚT

  • From being understood as a dwelling, the concept of home is extended to denote belongingness and a sense of attachment in which spiritual, ethnic, religious and historical identities shape a sense of self. Hence, home with its expanded definitions is considered as a cross-cutting and fundamental theme in works by Võ Phiến, one of the diaspora's towering minds who devoted his life to capturing the rich details of Vietnamese culture, its villages and locals. This article pays attention to the cultural space created through Võ Phiến's tuỳ bút written when he lived in Saigon and California. Many representations of home were argued as evidence of subtle influences of the historical and social context on the way Võ Phiến perceived and built his own homeland. By observing disruption and continuity through the expressions of the home in Võ Phiến's writing, we shed light on how Võ Phiến managed to create an indigenous cultural space towards social interactions of Western ideology in South Vietnam from 1964 to 1975.

한국(韓國) 술의 음식문화적(飮食文化的) 고찰(考察) (Korean Alcohol Beverage from the Viewpoint of Food Culture)

  • Alcoholic beverages can be viewed as repositories of historical information reflecting agricultural environment, economic and scientific level, religion, literature and art of their country. Korean Alcoholic beverages are based largely on rice, which have been developed in the following order: Takju, Cheongju and distilled spirits, Soju. They are closely related with the development of agriculture and historical levels of science and technology, and thus can be seen as symbolizing economic and political changes as well as rises and declines throughout the culture's history. The present review assessed the past and present flows of Korean alcoholic beverage culture, which has had a significant influence on the mental world of Korean people, based on literature concerning the history of food in Korea. Another focus of the study was a discussion on the future transmission and refining of Korean alcoholic beverage culture, which is undeniably informed by the Korean people's unique imagination and cultural sense.

한국과 중국에서 '정(亭)' 건축 기능의 변화에 대한 문헌적 고찰 (A Literature Study on the Functional Change of 'Jeong(亭)' in Korea and China)

  • In Korea, the function of Jeong(亭), Jeongja(亭子), and Nujeong(樓亭) architecture is essentially rest. However, in China, where the name Jeong was first coined and used, Jeong was not only used as a place of rest, but also for a variety of functions depending on the time and region, such as building units for guard posts, policing, and mail delivery. But why is it that in Korea, Jeong is primarily perceived and used as place of rest? Starting from this question, this article examines the historical process of the emergence of Jeong and its changing functions, focusing on the official history of China, and then examines the perception of Jeong in Korea through its connection to the dominant function of Jeong in China during the period of Jeong's emergence in Korean literature. This will help us to fundamentally understand the differences between Jeong architecture in Korea and Jeong architecture in China, and to further clarify the historical significance of the types of Jeongja and Nujeong architecture in Korea.

  • 본 연구는 드라마 <지금도 마로니에는>(2005)으로 드라마가 1960년대의 한국사회와 문학을 대중에게 전달하는 전략을 검토한다. 이 드라마는 세 명의 인물에 주목하여 1960년대의 역사적 격변과 문학의 대응을 형상화한다. 특히 실존 정치인인 캐릭터를 등장시켜 당대의 역사적 사건을 정면으로 다룬다. 따라서 드라마는 해설자와 인터뷰, 그리고 영상자료를 통하여 역사적 사건을 설명하는 동시에, 정치사회적 사건들이 한국인의 내면에 어떠한 영향을 미쳤는가를 이해하도록 한다. 또한 김지하와 김승옥의 서사를 통해서 드라마는 1960년대 한국의 문학이 정치적·사회적 맥락 속에서 부당한 현실에 어떻게 대응하는가를 전달한다. 권력층에 정면으로 반항하는 김지하와 내면의 풍경을 그려내는 김승옥의 방식으로 정치적 현실과 문학의 대응을 영상서사로 그려낸다. 이로써 이 드라마는 다소 전형적이라는 한계를 지니지만, 1960년대의 정치사회적 맥락 속에서 문학의 의미는 무엇이었으며, 또한 한국인의 내면에 1960년대의 기억이 어떠한 흔적을 남겼는가에 관한 의미 있는 질문을 던진다.

  • This study intended to review the historical mate selection process and to present wholesome mate selection process. For this purpose, reviewing the contents of secondary sources and novel literature. The following conclusions were drawn from this study: Mate selection process was a kind of culture which was influenced by social atmosphere. And pre-17th century, most of the young people had social intercourse liberally. Therefore we must constitute wholesome mate selection culture through early socialization about heterosexual social intercourse.

Restoration Review of the First Baptist Church in Urbana, Illinois (1838-)

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the history and significance of the building and its site of First Baptist Church in Urbana, Illinois. Before the full-scale restoration work is initiated, historical confirmation of the building is necessary. Therefore, this paper examined the historical significance of the church through the in-depth literature review and examined the interior and exterior conditions thoroughly. Ultimately, this paper can contribute to make up the restoration work list and to determine the priority of them.

중국 한국문학사 2종의 한국고전문학사 인식과 서술 양상: 남북한문학사와 자국문학사의 수용과 변용을 중심으로 (Recognition and Narrative Aspects of the History of Korean Classic Literature from Two Korean Literature History Works Written in China)

  • 이 논문은 중국에서 중국어로 집필된 한국문학사 가운데 조선족 학자인 이암(李岩)(외)의 "조선문학통사"(2010)와 한족 학자인 위욱승(韋旭昇)의 "조선문학사"(1988, 2008)의 서술시각을 남북한문학사와 비교하여 그 특징을 밝히고자 하였다. 주요 검토 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 조동일의 "한국문학통사"와 북한 15권본에서는 시대구분 방식, 장르의 개념, 개별 작품에 대해 논의를 세밀하게 전개하면서 이를 문학사 서술에서 적극 활용한 바 있다. 그러나 위욱승(韋旭昇)과 이암(李岩)의 한국문학사에서는 남북한의 이러한 이론적 논의 과정에 거의 주목하지 않았다. 이암(李岩)의 "조선문학통사"는 2010년에 출간되었고, 위욱승(韋旭昇)의 "조선문학사"는 1986년 초판을, 2000년과 2008년에 개정판을 출간했다. 두 문학사의 출간 시점으로 보면, 한국쪽에서 이루어진 여러 논의들을 참조하는 것이 당연한 일일 터인데 그렇지 못하다. 자국문학사의 서술 전통에 더 많은 영향을 받았기 때문이라 생각된다. 둘째, 두 텍스트는 정치 사회 경제 문화 등 문학 외부적 요인을 중시하며 각 시대마다 '개술'에서 이를 따로 언급하고 있고, 본문에서도 인민성 현실성 민족성 등 '정치 표준'에 의거한 평가가 중시된다. 이는 사회주의 체제에서의 문학사 서술에서 자주 쓰이는 방식이며, 북한 15권본도 비슷한 형식을 보인다. 셋째, 두 문학사는 중국학자가 쓴 한국문학사이기 때문에 중국문학과 한국문학의 연관성에 주목하는 부분이 많다. 하지만 소품(小品) 낙부(樂府) 우언(寓言) 설창(說唱) 사전(史傳) 등 장르 용어는 중국문학 용어를 많이 활용하였다. 그러나 중국에서 사용되는 이러한 장르 용어로 한국문학을 설명할 때, 본래의 의미와 변화된 의미 사이의 차이를 세밀하게 검토하지 않은 경우가 많았다. 향후 작업에서 반드시 고려되어야 할 점이라 생각한다.
