Hull forms of ancient ships in Korea and China have been changed according to their voyages and routes. Therefore it is necessary for shipbuilding engineers to reestablish the ancient shipbuilding history, and to presume, restore and revive the lost cultural inheritances. We, however, do not have many historical documents or credible materials that can our ancestors' great shipbuilding techniques : at the same time we do not have paid much attention to the research on such documents and materials. This paper aims not only to study and compare shifting process of ancient ship's hull forms in Korea and China by making use of verifiable materials obtained in the process of excavating and restoring Shinan ancient ship. The results of comparing structural characteristics and hull forms of ancient ships in Korea and China and as follwing : (1) Korean ancient ships have transverse beam instead of frame . Judged from the bottomform, Korean ancient ships are grooved clinker type ships of flat bottom type, in which bottom planking is fixed by wooden bar. (2) Chinese ancient ships have transverse bulkhead structure instead of frame, Judged from the bottom form , Chinese ancient ships are rabetted clinker type ships of V-bottom type with a bar keel. The form , the position, and the size of a sail are closely related with the wind force. It is not only quite difficult to presume forms and sizes of ancient ships' sails precisely, but also impossible to come to an accurate conclusion wihtout much experience. Current 10-year-statistics of the wind force are used to obtain presumed routes of ancient ships in Korea and China. Conclusions obtained from the hull form , sail form and size , and mast height of Shinan ancient ship will provide credible data for sea trade routes and transformation capability, and wil be used for effective materials on the study of the shifting process of ancient ships in Korea and China.
Busan was known firstly to the western world in the end of 18th century. When the Joseon opened a port under the western powers in the late 19th century, Busan was an important port. The increasing number of international ship exchange had magnified the harbor facility and the importance of lighthouses of Busan port. Busan maritime customs officer were in charge of installation and management of lighthouses. The operations of maritime customs became historical origin of Joseon changing from feudal society to modern nation. The majority of the documents from maritime customs was disappeared. So it was hard to know the exact history. But investigating documents and papers of Joseon, even media records will enable us to establish the objective fact relations. Moreover, published and translated data from the past make it possible such investigations. As a result, modern lighthouse of Busan harbor in the late Joseon after opening port was could be found. It could be offered to establishing the Korean modern history as the objective data.

YangDongChangHwaHuRok(兩東唱和後錄)is a book that organized the conversation between Joseon physician Ki-DuMun(奇斗文) and Japanese Acupuncture specialist Murakami Tanio(村上溪南) and others when they visited the quarters where the Choson Delegation(朝鮮通信使) were staying in, while the Choson Delegation party were visiting Japan in 1711. YangDongChangHwaHuRok(兩東唱和後錄) was discovered in the process of gathering medicine-related historical documents of the Choson Dynasty that is spread out all over the Japanese region, with the help from Japanese and Chinese scholars. This was part of the Co-Examination-Research-Process of korean medical documents that are located in the East Asia traditional medical region, which was promoted by the Korean Institute of Oriental Medicine in 2003. This paper has analyzed in-depth, with an inner-medical view, the academic exchange content of YangDongChangHwaHuRok(兩東唱和後錄) by following the order of the main text. With this examination, we were able discover new facts about the interest in Primary Symptom(是動病) and Secondary Symptom(所生病) of 17th century doctors, a new hypothesis on the diffusion of HeoYim(許任)'s ChimGuKyungHeomBang(鍼灸經驗方) in Japan, the existence of a new acupuncture tool called ChongChim(腫鍼), and the influence of the 18th comtemporay famous traditional medical books (it is called UiHakYipMun(醫學入門) and ShinEungKyung(神應經) on the 18th century East Asian medical circle. We were also able to ascertain the specific medical content that was diffused to the Japanese medical circle by the Korean medical circle.

This research is an explorative research done on finding sights in documents related to landscapes that are described in personal essay collections of late-Joseon Dynasty, and to fathom the possibilities of finding the actual landscape by analyzing the landscape and features of the landscape. The target sight of this research is to find all the features and landscapes of the Nong-yeon Seodang 10 scenery that are described in Choi Dong-Jip(late-Joseon Dynasty scholar)'s Daeam Sunsaeng Munjip. The results are as follows: 1) a theoretical inquiry into Daeam Choi Dong-Jip and his descendent Baekbulam Choi Heung-Won(who had compiled Daeam Sungsaeng Munjip)'s background and Nong-Yeon Seodang has been done, 2) Nong-Yeon Seodang's location was found through historical documents and field investigations, and 3) the features of landscapes related to Nong-Yeon Seodang 10 scenery and its distribution and the significance were analyzed. Through this inquiry, organization of Nong-Yeon Seodang and the significance of its direction were reflected again, records on garden organization were checked, and a direction for continuation of research was suggested.
Objectives : An error was found in the recent standard by the World Health Organization (WHO) on the locations of the Upper arm Route of Lung Meridian (URLM) and its acupoints LU3 and LU4. This possible incorrect information is being taught throughout Korean medicine colleges nationwide, which follow WHO standards. Therefore, an investigation is required to sort out this discrepancy based on the evidence in historical documents. Methods : The location of WHO's URLM and LU3 and LU4 were compared with corresponding information in the classical literature. The anatomical structure mentioned in these classical documents was examined. Finally, an assessment was conducted on whether this structure is reflected in the WHO standards. Results : Classical literature prior to the early 20th century records the locations of the Lung Meridian and LU3 and LU4 of the upper arm to be in the artery on the medial aspect. This artery corresponds to the brachial artery. The location established by the WHO is on the anterolateral side of the upper arm, where no large arteries exist that can be found by haptic search or angiographically. The anterolateral side of the upper arm belongs to the Yang aspect, which does not coincide with the Yin aspect of Lung Meridian. Conclusions : The WHO's URLM and LU3-4 standards do not agree with the classical literature. The correct route must coincide with the brachial artery passing through the medial side of the humerus. The actual location of LU3-4 is on the medial aspect of the arm, just medial to the border of the biceps brachii muscle, on the brachial artery, 3-4 B-cun inferior to the anterior axillary fold.

Analysis and prediction of storm surges are very important because the global warming has raised sea levels and increased the frequency of massive typhoons, accelerating damage of coastal flooding. However, the data for storm surge prediction is lacking due to the short history of observation in South Korea. The purpose of this study is to investigate the spatial and temporal characteristics of the previous surges and tsunamis based on the historical documents published during the Joseon Dynasty. In addition, we tried to evaluate the damage and spatial extent of such disasters, using the expressions about surge records including heights and number of administrative divisions. As a result, a total of 175 records of surges and tsunamis were compiled from 1392 to 1910: 145 events were extracted through the analysis of the ancient documents, and 30 events were from the previous research. Most of the strorm surges occurred along the west coast during summer season. More than half of the total surges were concentrated for 120 years from the mid 1600s to the mid 1700s, which was estimated to be highly relevant to the climate conditions in East Asia during the Little Ice Age. Hazardous areas by storm and tidal surges were also extracted, including Asan, Ganghwa, and Siheung during the Joseon Dyanisity period.

This paper develops a travel time prediction algorithm that can be used for real-time application. The algorithm searches for the most similar pattern in historical travel time database as soon as a series of real-time data become available. Artificial neural network approach is then taken to forecast travel time in the near future. To examine the performance of this algorithm, travel time data from Gyungbu Highway were obtained and the algorithm is applied. The evaluation shows that the algorithm could predict travel time within 4% error range if comparable patterns are available in the historical travel time database. This paper documents the detailed algorithm and validation procedure, thereby furnishing a key to generating future travel time information.
The purpose of this study was to develop cultural food contents from local dishes related to the historical and cultural heritage in the representative areas of Gurye and Jinan. The information on 'Story' was collected from each region's representative local native journal, searches of related web-sites, analysis of old literature, and interviews of traditional households. 'Telling', the conveyance, was focused on texts of literature analysis, which were synthesized from historical conditions, regional food materials, cuisine, regional symbolism, etc. The created food contents were displayed with balanced and healthy Korean food dishes after nutritional analysis. In Gurye, the content was extracted from the story of Hwang hyun (黃玹, 1855-1910) - figura of Gurye - and his collection, "Maecheonyarok", and the storytelling native food was prepared. In Jinan, the content was extracted from the text of an anecdote from "filial son Kwang-beom Lee", a local journal. We tried to express Gurye's clean image in connection with the patriot - Hwang hyun (his nick name was Maecheon), in the late period of Chosun through the unprocessed and simple nature of the dining table. As in Jinan's storytelling materials, we tried to express a healthy menu of health food for older people based on the clean nature and documents about the real character's filial behavior. The developed healthy menu and dining table properties in this study have been established in accordance with nutrient intake standards of energy in Korea.
Purpose : The purpose of this article is to make a clarification that Hwang Doyeon(黃度淵) was a official doctor(醫官) who even served as royal doctor(御醫), rather than merely a general doctor who worked in the private sector. The article also attempts to give a new perspective on the medical history about the late period of Joseon(朝鮮) Dynasty. Methods : In researching Hwang Doyeon's master work, the Gains and Losses of Medical Orthodoxy(醫宗損益), the article looks at his clinical medicines. Analyzing the historical records, the article makes an assumption that Hwang Doyeon and Hwang Dosoon(黃道淳), who was selected as an officer to discuss medicine with other medical officers(議藥同參), are the identical person. On this assumption, the article tries to reinterpret the medicine during the later Joseon Dynasty period. Result & Conclusion : The records, including the royal medical treatment records of the Gains and Losses of Medical Orthodoxy, the Daily Records of Royal Secretariat(承政院日記), the genealogy of Changwon Hwangs(昌原黃氏世譜), academic paper and government documents released posthumously, demonstrated that Hwang Doyeon and Hwang Dosoon are the same person. If so, we can have new historical interpretation about medical history of late Joseon Dynasty. First, during the late of Joseon Dynasty, there was an official and active medical knowledge interaction between government and private sector. Second, the Joseon's medicine has been established its own medical system based on the Treasured Mirror of Eastern Medicine(東醫寶鑑), trying to cope with cholera and other contemporary epidemics without relying on Chinese warm disease(溫病) medicine. Third, the Compilation of Formulas and Medicinals(方藥合編), is regarded not only as a must-read medical reading for medical doctors, also playing an important role on popularization of Korean medical knowledge.

Introduction : Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) was a newly coined term for a disease that existed prior to its naming in the mid 20th century. The issue about whether ADHD is a new disorder or merely a new name for an existing disorder is still controversial. The authors tried to find the clues to the answer for this question through reviewing historical documents for traces of ADHD. Contents : We could find literatures and medical records that contain possible ADHD symptoms. In particular, in 1845, Heinrich Hoffmann's 'fidgety Philip' or 'Johnny Look-in-the-air' nearly satisfies today's criteria for ADHD. Methylphenidate was approved as a promising chemical for inattention in 1957 before the establishment of the concept of ADHD. In 1968, ADHD was first officially introduced as "Hyperactivity Reaction of Childhood" by DSM-II. In 1980, DSM-III, 'Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD)' was adopted as an official diagnostic term and changed to 'ADHD' since the creation of DSM-III-R in 1987. Conclusion : As stated above, ADHD has existed since long ago and became familiar via an advanced diagnostic system and therapeutic options.
