In this paper an analytical model in a closed form able to reproduce the monotonic flexural response of external RC beam-column joints with smooth rebars is presented. The column is subjected to a constant vertical load and the beam to a monotonically increasing lateral force applied at the tip. The model is based on the flexural behavior of the beam and the column determined adopting a concentrated plasticity hinge model including slippage of the main reinforcing bars of the beam. A simplified bilinear moment-axial force domain is assumed to derive the ultimate moment associated with the design axial force. For the joint, a simple truss model is adopted to predict shear strength and panel distortion. Experimental data recently given in the literature referring to the load-deflection response of external RC joints with smooth rebars are utilized to validate the model, showing good agreement. Finally, the proposed model can be considered a useful instrument for preliminary static verification of existing external RC beam-column joints with smooth rebars for both strength and ductility verification.

The capacity protection is normally related with slenderness effect of the columns, force transfer in connections between columns and adjacent elements, and shear design of columns. It is intends to prevent brittle failure of the structural components of bridges, so that the whole bridge system may show ductile behavior and failure during earthquake events. For bridge systems, this means it is necessary to assess the overstrength capacity of columns prior to proceeding with the design of foundation and superstructure. The objective of this paper is to develop a capacity design approach that applies an overstrength factor for determination of possible maximum shear force in the plastic hinge zone of reinforced concrete bridge columns. In order to estimate and determine overstrength factor, material strength was developed to investigate for actual material strength total 3,407 steel and 5,405 concrete by domestic product. Based on actual material strength, this paper was conducted on moment overstrength factors using moment-curvature analysis program. And also design recommendations for capacity design are presented to revise the annual report, KEERC 2002.

Dynamic analyses were carried out to study the seismic response of high-rise steel moment-resisting frames in sixteen story buildings. The frames are intentionally designed by three different design procedures; strength controlled design. strong column-weak beam controlled design. and drift controlled design. The seismic performances of the so-designed frames with vertical mass irregularities were discussed in view of drift ratio. plastic hinge rotation, hysteretic energy input and stress demand. A demand curve of hysteretic energy inputs was also presented with two earthquake levels in peak ground accelerations for a future design application.
A computer program was developed to analyze the non-linear, cyclic flexural performance of reinforced concrete structural members under various types of loading paths including non-sequential variations in axial load. This performance is significantly affected by the loading history. Different monotonic material models as well as hysteresis rules for confined and unconfined concrete and steel, some developed and calibrated against test results on material samples, were implemented in a fiber-based moment-curvature and in turn force-deflection analysis. One of the assumptions on curvature distribution along the member was based on a method developed to address the variation of the plastic hinge length as a result of loading pattern. Functionality of the program was verified by reproduction of analytical results obtained by others for several cases, and accuracy of the analytical process and the implemented models were evaluated against the experimental results from large-scale reinforced concrete columns tested under the analyzed loading cases. While the program can be used to predict the response of a member under a certain loading pattern, it can also be used to examine various analytical models and methods or refine a custom material model against test data.

When coupling beams are proportioned appropriately in coupled core wall (CCW) systems, the input energy from ground motions is dissipated primarily through inelastic deformations in plastic hinge regions at the ends of the coupling beams. It is desirable that the plastic hinges form at the beam ends while the base wall piers remain elastic. The strength and stiffness of the coupling beams are, therefore, crucial if the desired global behavior of the CCW system is to be achieved. This paper presents the results of nonlinear response history analysis of two 20-story CCW buildings. Both buildings have the same geometric dimensions, and the components of the buildings are designed based on the equivalent lateral force procedure. However, one building is fitted with steel coupling beams while the other is fitted with diagonally reinforced concrete coupling beams. The force-deflection relationships of both beams are based on experimental data, while the moment-curvature and axial load-moment relationships of the wall piers are analytically generated from cross-sectional fiber analyses. Using the aforementioned beam and wall properties, nonlinear response history analyses are performed. Superiority of the steel coupling beams is demonstrated through detailed evaluations of local and global responses computed for a number of recorded and artificially generated ground motions.

This study mainly aims to assess the performance of soil-structure systems designed by direct displacement-based method coupled with strong column-weak beam design concept through various system identification techniques under strong ground motions. To this end, various system identification methods are employed to evaluate the dynamic characteristics of a structure (i.e., modal frequency, system damping, mode shapes, and plastic hinge formation pattern) under a strong seismic excitation considering soil-structure interaction for different site conditions as specified by ASCE 7-10. The scope of the study narrowed down to the code-complying low- to high-rise steel moment resisting frames with various heights (4, 8, 12, 16-story). The comparison of the result of soil-structure systems with fix-based support condition indicates that the modal frequencies of these systems are highly influenced by the structure heights, specifically for the softer soils. This trend is more significant for higher modes of the system which can considerably dominate the response of structures in which the higher modes have more contribution in dynamic response. Amongst all studied modes of the vibration, the damping ratio estimated for the first mode is relatively the closet to the initial assumed damping ratios. Moreover, it was found that fewer plastic hinges are developed in the structure of soil-structure systems with a softer soil which contradicts the general expectation of higher damageability of such structural systems.

Cracking was observed in beam-to-column connections of many steel building frames during the 1994 Northridge and 1995 Kobe earthquakes. Thus extensive experimental researches are currently being conducted to improve the seismic performance of steel frames. A value of 0.015 radian was considered as a reasonable estimate of beam plastic rotation demand in steel moment-resisting frames subjected to severe earthquakes. The objective of this research is to develop a type of connection detail which moves the plastic hinge region in the beam away from the face of the column and can prevent cracking at the welded flange of the beam-to-column connection under seismic loading. An experimental investigation was undertaken on five beam-to-column connection specimens to study the performance of the connections with proposed details. The experiemental results showed that the flexural strength and rotational ductility of the beam connections were adequate for the seismic resistance steel frames to prevent possible cracks at the connections.

This study was conducted to investigate the seismic behavior of steel member resisting frames considering the relative stiffness of the connection and beams. Six-story steel moment frames were designed to study the seismic behavior. The connections were classified into Double Web-Angle connections (DWAs), Top- and Seat-angles with double Web-angles (TWSs), FEMA-Test Summary No. 28, Specimen ID: UCSD-6 (SAC), and Fully Restrained (FR). The rotational stiffness of the semi-rigid connections was estimated using the Three-Parameter Power Model adopted by Chen and Kishi. The relative stiffness, which is the ratio of the rotational stiffness of the connections to the stiffness of the beams, was used. Push-over, repeated loading, and time history analysis were performed for all the frames. The seismic behavior of each frame was analyzed with the story drift, plastic hinge rotation, and hysteretic energy distribution.

Double split tee connection is a full strength-partial restrained connection that suitable for ordinary moment frame and special moment frame which demonstrates behavior characteristics depending on the stiffness ratio of columns and beams, changes in the geometric shape of the T-stub, number of fasteners and effect of panel zone. For the double split tee connection to ensure structurally safe behavior, it needs to exhibit sufficient strength, stiffness and ductile capacity. This study sought to investigate the effects of the moment-rotation angle relationship of the double split tee connection and to evaluate the initial rotational stiffness of the double split tee connection depending on changes in the geometric shape of the T-stub. To this end, two different double split tee connection specimens are experimented which designed to change geometric parameter values (${\alpha}^{\prime}$) of the T-stub, and a three-dimensional finite element analysis was performed.

In this paper, we proposed a numerical model based on moment-curvature, to evaluate the resistance of reinforced concrete (RC) members subjected to blast loading. To consider the direct shear failure mode, we introduced a dimensionless spring element based on the empirical direct shear stress-slip relation. Based on the dynamic increase factor equations for materials, new dynamic increase factor equations were constructed in terms of the curvature rate for the section which could be directly applied to the moment-curvature relation. Additionally, equivalent bending stiffness was introduced in the plastic hinge region to consider the effect of bond-slip. To verify the validity of the proposed model, a comparative study was conducted against the experimental results, and the superiority of this numerical model was confirmed through comparison with the analytical results of the single-degree of freedom model. Pressure-impulse (P-I) diagrams were produced to evaluate the resistance of members against bending failure and direct shear failure, and additional parametric studies were conducted.
