  • In this paper, a new novel technique of seismic survey is introduced to estimate the continuity of inclined pits filled with water, It was assumed that the pits would be connected to an abandoned railway tunnel that might be constructed in the past. Thus, detection of pit end was needed for the design of a new highway tunnel(Yukshimreong tunnel) that was likely to be met with a pit. In the beginning of exploration, no reliable, cost effective method was available. Hence, focus of interest moved toward the high impedance contrast(reflection coefficient k∼0.8) between water and rock. In this special model of sequence rock-water-rock, total reflection occurs and the seismic energy, when it is generated in the pit water, is nearly confined to the pit so that seismic waves can propagate much further within the pit. As a matter of convenience, this is called“tunnel channel wave”. With these considerations in mind, seismic detonator(2g) was used as a source at the entrance of pit, whereas hydrophone chain(hydrophone interval=1m) was placed on the bottom of pit. With this appropriate source-receiver arrangement, desirable down-going and up-going waves could be observed that will help conform the continuity of pits. After about one year, it was ascertained that the inclined pit of interest was just nearby crossed with the newly excavated tunnel, as it was predicted.

  • PURPOSES: The existing method evaluating the existence of the hollows in concrete pavement does not consider the stiffness of pavement. In addition, the method uses unreasonable logic judging the hollow existence by the deflection caused by zero loading. In this study, the deflection of slab corner due to heavy weight deflectometer (HWD) was measured in concrete pavement sections where underground structures are located causing the hollows around them. METHODS: The modulus of subgrade reaction obtained by comparing the actual deflection of slab to the result of finite element analysis was calibrated into the composite modulus of subgrade reaction. The radius of relative stiffness was calculated, and the relationship between the ratio of HWD load to the radius of relative stiffness and the slab deflection was expressed as the curve of secondary degree. RESULTS: The trends of the model coefficients showing width and maximum value of the curve of secondary degree were analyzed by categorizing the pavement sections into three groups : hollows exist, additional investigation is necessary, and hollows do not exist. CONCLUSIONS: The results analyzed by the method developed in this study was compared to the results analyzed by existing method. The model developed in this study will be verified by analyzing the data obtained in other sections with different pavement structure and materials.

  • PURPOSES : This study is to analyze expected effect of a accident decrease when motorcycle safety inspection is introduced. METHODS : Based on the literature review of effect of 4-wheel vehicle inspection, probability of occurring accidents among defective motorcycles are calculated by using the number of estimated defective motorcycles and accidents resulting from defects of motorcycles. Then, the number of decreased accidents which is resulting from eliminating defects of motorcycles by safety inspection is estimated by using probability of occurring accidents among defective motorcycles. RESULTS : If the ratio of eliminating defects of motorcycles is 95% after motorcycle safety inspection, the effects of accident decrease of motorcycle safety inspection are analyzed from 2005 to 2008. As a result, 46,292 defective motorcycles are repaired and 1,376 accidents are prevented when the probability of occurring accidents among defective motorcycles is 2.97%. CONCLUSIONS : This study suggests the expected effect of motorcycle safety inspection is that the inspection can prevent 1,376 motorcycle accidents. However, the number of preventing motorcycle accidents are small, compared with the total number of motorcycle accidents because there are limitations to investigate the causes of defective motorcycle accidents. A more precise analysis of the expected effect of motorcycle inspection is possible when a systematic investigation of the causes of the accidents is implemented.

  • This study aims to provide a methodological framework to estimate the travel demand of hazardous materials transporting vehicles by link and analyze daily traffic patterns on an expressway to develop safety roadway management strategies. Traffic volume of hazardous material vehicles is counted through the on-site investigation at twenty-five tollgates on the expressway, and their demands by a link are predicted through origin-destination flows estimation. The result shows that the number of the domestic hazardous materials vehicles is approximately 51,207 vehicles per day and it indicates that hazardous materials transport vehicles account for 1.5% of total daily traffic on the internal expressway and 6.2% of total cargo traffic volumes. This study roughly estimated how many hazardous materials vehicles pass through the expressway segment. Thus it is expected to be utilized for establishing a systematic highway management strategy in the future by calculating the traffic volume of the hazardous material vehicles traveling on the interstate expressway.

  • Concrete filled rectangular steel tubular (CFRST) composite truss girder is composed of the CFRST truss and concrete slab. The failure mechanism of the girder was different under bending and shear failure modes. The bending and shear strength of the girder were investigated experimentally. The influences of composite effect and shear to span ratio on failure modes of the girder was studied. Results indicated that the top chord and the joint of the truss were strengthened by the composited effect. The failure modes of the specimens were changed from the joint on top chord to the bottom chord. However, the composite effect had limited effect on the failure modes of the girder with small shear to span ratio. The concrete slab and top chord can be regarded as the composite top chord. In this case, the axial force distribution of the girder was close to the pin-jointed truss model. An approach of strength prediction was proposed which can take the composite effect and shear to span ratio into account. The approach gave accurate predictions on the strength of CFRST composite truss girder under different bending and shear failure modes.

  • This study's purpose is to analyse factors of determination about detouring for makinga standard model in regard of unfavorableness and uncertainty when unspecified individual recipients make a decision at the time of course detour. In order to achieve this, we surveyed SP investigation whether making a detour or not for drivers as a target who take a high way and National highway. Based on this result, we analysed detour determination factors of drivers, establishing a combination model of Decision Tree and Neural Network model. The result demonstrates the effected factors on drivers' detour determination are in ordering of the recognition of alternative routevs, reliable and frequency of using traffic information, frequency of transition routes and age. Moreover, from the outcome in comparison with an existing model and prediction through undistributed data, the rate of combination model 8.7% illustrates the most predictable way in contrast with logit model 12.8%, and Individual Model of Decision Tree 13.8% which are existed. This reveals that the analysis of drivers' detour determination factors is valid to apply. Hence, overall study considers as a practical foundation to make effective detour strategies for increasing the utility of route networking and dispersion in the volume of traffic from now on.

  • Traffic data by vehicle classification is difficult for mutual exchange of data due to the different vehicle classification from each other by the data sources; as a result, application of the data is very limited. In Particular. in case of TCS vehicle classification in national highways, passenger car, van and truck are mixed in one category and the practical usage is very low. The research standardize the vehicle classification to convert other data and develop the model which can estimate national highway traffic data by the standardized vehicle classification from the raw traffic data obtained at the highway tollgates. The tollgates are categorized into several groups by their features and the model estimates traffic data by the standardized vehicle classification by using the point estimation and bootstrap algorithm. The result indicates that both of the two methods above have the significant level. When considering the bias of the extreme value by the sample size, the bootstrap algorithm is more sophisticated. Using result of this study, we is expect the usage improvement of TCS data and more specific comparison between the freeway traffic investigation and link volume on freeway using the TCS data.

  • This paper presents an experimental investigation on the structural performance of precast ribbed panel specimens and bridge deck specimens fabricated from the panels. The panel specimens are developed for permanent deck forms of railway bridges (PSC girder). The decks of railway bridges have short lengths compared with highway bridges. Therefore, precast panels for railway bridges are different from those of highway bridges. The precast panels have ribs designed for crack control at the bottom of the sections. Two kinds of specimens were examined: one with 400-mm width and one with 1200-mm width. Three specimens of each type were fabricated, and a total of 12 specimens were tested. In this test, the ultimate load, strain of the reinforcement and concrete, crack width, deformation, and slip were measured. The structural performance of the specimens was assessed using the Korea railway bridge design code and Eurocode. All specimens met the current design criteria for structural strength and serviceability.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of new materials with forest topsoil for hydroseeding measures that is environmentally and ecologically stable revegetation measures on rock cut-slopes. Field hydroseeding experiment was used with a completely randomized design at highway rock cut-slopes in April, 1997. Results obtained in this study were summarized as follows: Particle size distribution of 3 mixed-soil materials that consisted of forest topsoil, decomposed granite soil, compost, sludge, and bottom ash did not show a significant difference. As appending the amount of forest topsoil, soil bulk density was increased. Soil hardness was slightly increased in early period, and then decreased with the flourishing of plants. The number of individuals increased, more than $3,000seedlings/m^2$, after 1 month, and it was decreased as time passes because of competition between the seeded species and the naturally emerged species. In addition to the seeded species, seeding plot has more than 6 species (Rubus crataegifolius, Eleusine indica, Erigeron canadensis, Lycopersicon esculentum var. cerasiforme, etc.) per $m^2$ were naturally appeared in the first year. From the viewpoint of species diversity promotion, the capability of using forest topsoil as seed bank sources was high. In order to apply in the field, the investigation and analysis of topsoil availability (quantity and quality of seed source, soil texture and organic composition) should be carried out before-hand.

  • Since the allowable bearing capacities of piles in weathered/fractured rock are mainly governed by settlement, the load-displacement behavior of pile should be known accurately. To predict pile head settlement at the design stage, the exact understanding of the load-transfer mechanisms is essential. Therefore, in this research, the load-transfer mechanism of drilled shaft socketed into weathered rock was investigated. For the investigation, five cast-in-place concrete piles with diameters of 1,000 mm were socketed into weathered gneiss. The static axial load tests and the load-transfer measurements were performed to examine the axial resistant behavior of the piles. A comprehensive field/laboratory testing program on weathered rock at the Held test sites was also performed to describe the in situ rock mass conditions quantitatively. And then, the effect of rock mass condition on the load transfer mechanism was investigated. The f-w (side shear resistance-displacement) curve of the pile in moderately weathered rock reached to yielding point at a for millimeter displacements, and after yielding point, the rate of resistance increment dramatically decreased. However, the f-w curve in the highly/completely weathered rock did not show the obvious yielding point, and the resistance gradually increased showing the hyperbolic pattern until relatively high displacement (>15 mm). The q-w (end bearing resistance-displacement) curves showed linear response at least until the base displacement of approximately 10 mm, regardless of rock mass conditions.
