Structural performance of concrete containing fly ash based lightweight angular aggregates

  • The present investigation deals with the production of the innovative lightweight fly ash angular aggregates (FAA) first time in India using local class 'F' fly ash, its characterization, and exploring the potential for its utilization as alternative coarse aggregates in structural concrete applications. Two types of aggregates are manufactured using two different kinds of binders. The manufacturing process involves mixing fly ash, binder, and water, followed by the briquetting process, sintering and crushing them into suitable size aggregates. Tests are conducted on fly ash angular aggregates to measure their physical properties such as crushing value, impact value, specific gravity, water absorption, bulk density, and percentage of voids. Study shows that the physical parameters are significantly enhanced as compared to commercially available fly ash pellets (FAP). The developed FAA are used in concrete vis-à-vis conventional granite aggregates and FAP to determine their compressive, split tensile and flexural strengths. Although being lightweight, the strength parameters for concrete containing FAA are well compared with conventional concrete. This might be due to the high pozzolanic reaction between fly ash angular aggregates and cement paste. Also, RCC beams are cast and the load-deflection behaviour and ultimate load carrying capacity signify that FAA can be suitably used for RCC construction. Hence, the utilization of fly ash as angular aggregates can reduce the dead load of the structure and at the same time serves as a solution for fly ash disposal and mineral depletion problem.

Shear behaviour of thin-walled composite cold-formed steel/PE-ECC beams

  • The novel composite cold-formed steel (CFS)/engineered cementitious composites (ECC) beams have been recently presented. The new composite section exhibited superior structural performance as a flexural member, benefiting from the lightweight thin-walled CFS sections with improved buckling and torsional properties due to the restraints provided by thinlayered ECC. This paper investigated the shear performance of the new composite CFS/ECC section. Twenty-eight simply supported beams, with a shear span-to-depth ratio of 1.0, were assembled back-to-back and tested under a 3-point loading scheme. Bare CFS, composite CFS/ECC utilising ECC with Polyethylene fibres (PE-ECC), composite CFS/MOR, and CFS/HSC utilising high-strength mortar (MOR) and high-strength concrete (HSC) as replacements for PE-ECC were compared. Different failure modes were observed in tests: shear buckling modes in bare CFS sections, contact shear buckling modes in composite CFS/MOR and CFS/HSC sections, and shear yielding or block shear rupture in composite CFS/ECC sections. As a result, composite CFS/ECC sections showed up to 96.0% improvement in shear capacities over bare CFS, 28.0% improvement over composite CFS/MOR and 13.0% over composite CFS/HSC sections, although MOR and HSC were with higher compressive strength than PE-ECC. Finally, shear strength prediction formulae are proposed for the new composite sections after considering the contributions from the CFS and ECC components.

탄소섬유쉬트로 보강된 RC 보의 유한요소해석 (FE Analysis of RC Beams Strengthened with Carbon Fiber Sheet)

  • 탄소섬유쉬트는 경량, 고강도, 우수한 내식성, 그리고 간편한 시공성 때문에 많은 종류의 철근콘크리트 부재의 보강에 사용되고 있다. 그러나 탄소섬유쉬트에 의해 보강된 철근콘크리트 부재의 파괴거동은 탄소섬유쉬트와 콘크리트 표면의 부착특성에 따라 크게 달라진다. 본 연구에서는 탄소섬유쉬트와 콘크리트 사이의 경계면에 링크요소를 이용함으로써 탄소섬유쉬트와 콘크리트 사이의 부착거동의 변화를 고려한 부착응력-미끄럼 모델을 제안하였다. 또한 이 방법의 유효성을 알아보기 위하여 탄소섬유쉬트로 보강된 철근콘크리트 보의 파괴거동에 대한 해석을 실시하여 실험결과와 비교하였다. 그 결과 본 연구에서 제안된 모델을 이용한 해석결과는 실험결과와 비교적 잘 일치함을 알 수 있었다.

섬유시트로 보강된 RC 보의 해석기법 연구 (Analysis of RC Beams Strengthened with Fiber Sheets)

  • 본 논문에서는 철근 콘크리트보의 인장면에 고강도이며 경량인 섬유시트를 외부 부착한 보강보의 휨 실험결과를 바탕으로 섬유시트로 보강된 RC 휨부재의 비선형 해석 기법을 제시한다. 섬유시트의 인장성능을 측정하기 위하여 총 120개의 섬유시트 인장시험편을 제작하여 시험하였으며, 섬유시트 보강 RC보의 여러 가지 보강특성 및 섬유시트의 적절한 파단변형률을 평가하기 위한 실험적 연구를 위해 75개의 비교적 큰 규모의 보를 시험하였다. 콘크리트의 비선형 압축 분포 및 인장성능을 고려한 비선형 단면 해석과정을 전개하였으며, 이러한 비선형 해석기법이 섬유시트 보강 RC보의 하중-변위 응답 및 휨거동 특성을 정확하게 예측함을 확인하였다.

H형강 접합부를 갖는 목조 골조의 보강형식에 따른 구조성능 (Structural performance by strengthening types of wood frames using H shaped steel joints)

  • The effective mixture of structural laminated timber and other materials is expected to extend the potentials of building structures because of the potentials to realize high performance in structural safety. The classical joint types using drift pin and bolts are occurred local failures due to the small bearing area. In result, new joints using H shaped steel were suggested in this research. The objective of this study is to evaluate elasto-plastic behaviors by strengthening types of wood frames with new joints connecting structural laminated timber with H shaped steel. A total of five specimens of about one-second scale were tested. Specimens had columns with 1,050 height and $84mm{\times}100mm$ section, and a beams with 1,950mm length and $130mm{\times}100mm$ section. Also, the specimens were stiffened by brace, hwang-toh brick, and autoclaved lightweight concrete. The results of the test showed that the specimen stiffened with autoclaved lightweight concrete was characterized by fairly good strength and stiffness than those of the other specimens. Initial stiffness of H-2.0D-NS specimen with 2 times inserting length of beam height showed 1.33 times than that of H-1.5D-NS specimen. However, the strength of H-2.0D-NS specimen has not improved too much than H-1.5D-NS specimen.
