  • This paper is an experimental study on shear capacity of the high strength lightweight reinforced concrete beams with shear-depth ratio between 1.5 and 2.5. Thirteen T & rectangular beams were tested to determine their diagonal cracking and ultimate shear capacity. The major variables are shear span-depth ratio (a/d=1.5, 2.0, 2.5), concrete compressive strength(f'c=210, 24., 270㎏/㎠) and tensile steel ratio( =0.6, 1.2%). Based on results obtained from experiment of high strength lightweight reinforced concrete Beam & normal concrete, the following conclusions were drawn. (1) The shear capacity of high-strength lightweight concrete is less 15% than that of normal concrete under same condition. (2) As the results of Comparing this experimental datas with other various formulas. It is regarded that ACI 318-89 shear strength formula related tensile strength is proper to design formula of shear strength of high-strength lightweight reinforced concrete using lightweight concrete.

  • This study is to investigate experimentally the shear capacity of high-strength lightweight-aggregate reinforced concrete beams subjected to monotonic loading. Ten beams made of fly-ash artificial lightweight high-strength concrete were tested to determine their diagonal cracking and ultimate shear capacities. The variables in the test program were longitudinal reinforcement ratio; which variabled (between 0.83 and 1.66 percent), shear span-to-depth ratio (a/d=1.5, 2.5 and 3.5), and web reinforcement(0, 0.137, 0.275 and 0.554 percent). Six of the test beams had no web reinforcement and the other six had web reinforcement along the entire length of the beam. Most of beams failed brittly by distinct diagonal shear crack, and have reserved shear strength due to the lack of additional resisting effect by aggregate interlocking action after diagonal cracking. Test results indicate that the ACI Building Code predictions of Eq. (11-3) and (11-5) for lightweight concretes are unconservative for beams with tensile steel ratio of 1.66, a/d ratios greater than 2.5 without web reinforcement. Through a more rational approach to compute the contribution of concrete to the shear capacity, a postcracking shear strength in concrete is observed.

  • This paper is experimental study on the flexural strength and ductility capacity of reinforced high-strength concrete beams using fly ash artificial lightweight concrete beams and five reinforced high-strength normal concrete beams with different tensile reinforcement ratio were tested to investigate their behavior. Test result show that the ratio of flexural strength between experimetal results and those by ACI code decrease as the compressive strength of concrete increase. Also, The reinforced concrete beams behave more brittly than those with equal reinforcement ratio($\rho$/$\rho$b) as the compressive strength of concrete increase.

  • We have developed a lightweight aggregate (LWA) concrete made by expanding fine sediments dredged from the Shihmen Reservoir (Taiwan) with high heat. In this study, the performance of the concrete and of prestressed concrete beams made of the sedimentary LWA were tested and compared with those made of normal-weight concrete (NC). The test results show that the lightweight concrete (LWAC) exhibited comparable time-dependent properties (i.e., compressive strength, elastic modulus, drying shrinkage, and creep) as compared with the NC samples. In addition, the LWAC beams exhibited a smaller percentage of prestress loss compared with the NC beams. Moreover, on average, the LWAC beams could resist loading up to 96% of that of the NC beams, and the experimental strengths were greater than the nominal strengths calculated by the ACI Code method. This investigation thus established that sedimentary LWA can be recommended for structural concrete applications.

  • In general, flexural strength and ductility of reinforced concrete beam with stirrup depend on the compressive strength of concrete and longitudinal steel ratio. In this study, nine reinforced high strength lightweight concrete beams and three reinforced normalweight concrete beams with stirrup were tested to investigate their behavior and to determine their ultimate moment capacity. The variable were strength of concrete (400, 500kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$) and the ratio of tensile steel content to the ratio of the balanced steel content(0.22<$\rho$/$$\rho$_b$<0.56). Test results are presented in terms of load-deflection behavior, ductility index, and cracking patterns.

  • Lightweight concrete is a superior material due to its light weight and high strength. There however remain significant lacunae in engineering knowledge with regards to shear failure of lightweight fiber reinforced concrete beams. The main aim of the present study is to investigate the optimum usage of steel fibers in lightweight fiber reinforced concrete (LWFRC). Multi-scale finite element model calibrated with experimental results is developed to study the effect of steel fibers on the mechanical properties of LWFRC beams. To decrease the amount of steel fibers, it is preferred to reinforce only the middle section of the LWFRC beams, where the flexural stresses are higher. For numerical simulation, a multi-scale finite element model was developed. The cement matrix was modeled as homogeneous and uniform material and both steel fibers and lightweight coarse aggregates were randomly distributed within the matrix. Considering more realistic assumptions, the bonding between fibers and cement matrix was considered with the Cohesive Zone Model (CZM) and its parameters were determined using the model update method. Furthermore, conformity of Load-Crack Mouth Opening Displacement (CMOD) curves obtained from numerical modeling and experimental test results of notched beams under center-point loading tests were investigated. Validating the finite element model results with experimental tests, the effects of fibers' volume fraction, and the length of the reinforced middle section, on flexural and residual strengths of LWFRC, were studied. Results indicate that using steel fibers in a specified length of the concrete beam with high flexural stresses, and considerable savings can be achieved in using steel fibers. Reducing the length of the reinforced middle section from 50 to 30 cm in specimens containing 10 kg/m3 of steel fibers, resulting in a considerable decrease of the used steel fibers by four times, whereas only a 7% reduction in bearing capacity was observed. Therefore, determining an appropriate length of the reinforced middle section is an essential parameter in reducing fibers, usage leading to more affordable construction costs.

  • The characteristics of lightweight aggregate (LWA) with a low specific gravity and high water absorption will significantly change the properties of lightweight aggregate concrete (LWAC). This study aimed at exploring the effect of presoaking degree of LWA on the strength degeneracy of LWAC and flexural behavior of LWAC members exposed to elevated temperatures. The residual mechanical properties of the LWAC subjected to elevated temperatures were first conducted. Then, the residual load tests of LWAC members (beams and slabs) after exposure to elevated temperatures were carried out. The test results showed that with increasing temperature, the decreasing trend of elastic modulus for LWAC was considerably more serious than the compressive strength. Besides, the presoaking degree of LWA had a significant influence on the residual compressive strength and elastic modulus for LWAC after exposure to $800^{\circ}C$. Moreover, owing to different types of heating, the residual load bearing capacity of the slab specimens were significantly different from those of the beam specimens.
