  • This study investigates supply patterns and residential characteristics of the Urban-type Housing in Seoul. There have been 3,336 buildings and 71,790 housing units approved until the end of 2012. One-room apartments and small units less than 30 $m^2$ of residential area amount to 81% and 82% of total units, respectively. Major findings are as follows. First, single- and two-person households less than 30 years of age are mostly lived in the housing. Respondents are mainly professional and white-collar (43%) and service and sales workers (27%). Most of them are mid-income classes (67%), which is twice more than that of single- and two-person households in Seoul. They pay 672 thousand won in rent more than average rent of mid-income class. The rent to income ratios are 29.9% for single households and 24.5% for two-person households, which are higher than that of mid-income bracket. Third, their satisfaction level is relatively high in internal environment and access to public service facilities, but not in external environment and community service facilities. They are satisfied with security and daylight, walking and safety, access to public transport and parking space, but not with noise and vibration, natural environment, access to park and cultural and sports facilities, and most community service facilities. It is necessary to reexamine the articles of deregulation and prepare design standards while considering different housing and locational types.

First, approximately 80% of the respondents had plans to buy a house through self-support and loan. Second, the consciousness of mortgage loan was relatively low, but the willingness to use it was very high. Third, the need for mortgage loan was relatively high, especially the need for specialists to facilitate the information circulation. Lastly, the awareness and need for mortgage loan were significantly influenced by the family and housing characteristics of households including family life cycle stages, the structure of dwelling, tenure type and monthly household income. • Objectives: To relieve the financial burden faced by households, the Korean National Health Insurance (NHI) system introduced a "copayment ceiling," which evolved into a differential ceiling in 2009, with the copayment ceiling depending on patients' income. This study aimed to examine the effect of the differential copayment ceiling on financial protection and healthcare utilization, particularly focusing on whether its effects varied across different income groups. Methods: This study obtained data from the Korea Health Panel. The number of households included in the analysis was 6555 in 2008, 5859 in 2009, 5539 in 2010, and 5372 in 2011. To assess the effects of the differential copayment ceiling on utilization, out-of-pocket (OOP) payments, and catastrophic payments, various random-effects models were applied. Utilization was measured as treatment days, while catastrophic payments were defined as OOP payments exceeding 10% of household income. Among the right-hand side variables were the interaction terms of the new policy with income levels, as well as a set of household characteristics. Results: The differential copayment ceiling contributed to increased utilization regardless of income levels both in all patients and in cancer patients. However, the new policy did not seem to reduce significantly the incidence of catastrophic payments among cancer patients, and even increased the incidence among all patients. Conclusions: The limited effect of the differential ceiling can be attributed to a high proportion of direct payments for services not covered by the NHI, as well as the relatively small number of households benefiting from the differential ceilings; these considerations warrant a better policy design.

  • This study analyzed private pension dependency of Korea and U.S. households using the most recent dataset of two countries. For this purpose, 2013 Korean Retirement and Income Study(KReIS) of national pension research institute in Korea and 2013 SCF(Survey of Consumer Finances) of FRB in U.S. were used. The private pension dependency was defined as the proportion of private pension wealth among total financial wealth in each household and tobit model was used to investigate determinants of private pension dependency of the two countries. After controlling for other factors, household income and net worth, age, educational attainment, and health status of householder were crucial determinants of private pension dependency for both countries. Householder's age, educational attainment, and health tend to increase the private pension dependency in Korea and U.S. However, household income and net worth affected the private pension dependency opposite direction. The private pension dependency increased with high level of income and net worth in Korea, while it decreased with high level of income and net worth in U.S. Results of this study provide useful implications for future pension system and policy in Korea.

  • This study was conducted to verify the factors affecting self-esteem of the 50-69 aged with low income in single person households. The subjects were 233 single households in the 50-69 aged low income from the 2019 welfare panel data provided by the Ministry of Health and Welfare. The dependent variable was defined as self-esteem, and independent variables were relationship satisfaction and life satisfaction. Data analysis was carried out by using SEM analysis, As a result, relationship satisfaction did not have a direct effect on self-esteem, with a low value (path coefficient =0.24). However, relationship satisfaction positively influenced life satisfaction (path coefficient =0.71), and life satisfaction positively influenced the self-esteem (path coefficient =0.46). Thus life satisfaction between relationship satisfaction and self-esteem had a mediator effect on self-esteem with 0.32 value. Therefore, establishing the strategy which supports poor single person households, policy makers should consider methods improving relationship satisfaction and life satisfaction.

  • This study examines how single-person household expenditure patterns are different with respect to age and income groups using Tobit model. The expenditure data of the national household survey from 2006 to 2012 were used. The results show that income elasticities of all items are greater than 1 except for food & beverage, housing, water, electricity & gas, and Communication. Income elasticities are significantly different among consuming items. Additionally the income elasticities are also different between various age and income groups of single-person households. Therefore governments and businesses have to take this into account when devising their policies or strategies regarding single-person households. Especially, businesses need to adopt a strategy targeted at single-person households with high income and buying power such as unmarried professional people. As the number of single-person household increases the proportion of expenditures on necessities such as beverage, food, and energy is expected to decrease while that on services increases. Consequently policy responses are required to prepare for the expansion of service industries such as health, hospital, and housekeeping services.
