A PCF(Pore Controllable Fiber Filter) process was applied as a pretreatment of water treatment for reduction of turbidity. The experimental results obtained from the PCF showed that the removal efficiency of turbidity without coagulation was around over 70 percent. However, the removal efficiency of turbidity by the coagulation-PCF process was high as much as over 95%. Thus, the coagulation pretreatment was required for the better operation of the PCF. The SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope) images of fiber before and after filtration showed that the filtration mechanism of PCF filter is both controlling attachment mechanism and Sieving mechanism through fiber pore. For the coagulation-PCF process, optimum dosage of coagulant was needed for the economical operation, and for this, determining the optimum dosage by using a filter column test. Also only 16mg/L of alum was used to obtain high algae removal efficiency over 90%. Therefore, it can be concluded that coagulation-PCF process is very effective pretreatment process for algae removal.
The objective of this study is to evaluate the effect of filter aids in the dual-media rapid filtration. Paper-filter tests were conducted to determine the proper dosages of coagulant and filter aid, and pilot plant tests using two dual-media filter columns were performed for a variety of filtration rates. Using a filter aid (non-ionic polymer), the maximum feasible filtration rate is 480m/day, while turbidity is less than 0.3 NTU and filter run-time is about 70 hours. It is possible to increase the filtration rate up to 360 m/day for keeping the turbidity less than 0.1 NTU. Turbidity increases for the filtration rate greater than 360m/day. In general, the quality of filtered water with a filter aid is stable, while the filter maintains a sufficient filter run-time for a maximum allowable head loss. Particularly, the initial breakthrough can be effectively controlled. The use of a filter aid may be one of the methods applicable if the turbidity of filtered water is required to be improved or if the filter breakthrough limits filter run-time.
Conventional sedimentation method has some limitations for turbidity removal in water treatment because drinking water sources are getting polluted. Removal rates of turbidity using DAF and sedimentation process were compared for various water conditions to know whether DAF is effective to improve sedimentation process. Water samples were clay(gravity 2.65) water 100mg/l, H raw water, mixed water of H raw water and clay 100mg/l, and mixed water of HA(Humic Acid) 5mg/l and clay 100mg/l. Other parameters were temperature, coagulants(Alum, $FeCl_3$), and treatment time. Water temperature greatly affected in removal rates of turbidity for sedimentation and DAF. Generally DAF was more effective in removal rates of turbidity than sedimentation at the same experimental condition. Removal rates of $UV_{254}$ were high to over 90%, and independent of temperature and coagulant.
This study investigated the possibility of reducing the residual aluminum (Al) in the treated water using polymers. Two raw waters (lake and river water) and three kinds of polymers (coagulant, flocculant, and filtration aids) were used for this purpose. This study found that coagulation at the high dose did not necessarily lead to the high concentration of the residual Al in the treated water. The coagulation efficacy was found more important in determining the residual Al than the coagulant dose. The use of a polymer enhanced the removal of turbidity as well as the residual Al. The coagulant aid removed the dissolved Al as well as the particulate Al by helping the coagulation and the solid-liquid separation. The flocculant aid and the filtration aid preferentially removed the particulate Al while helping the solid-liquid separation. The filtration aid reduced the residual Al substantially more effectively than the flocculant aid. The polyamine-based coagulant aid (FL) showed the better performance in reducing the residual Al and turbidity than DADMAC (WT). The cationic flocculant aid with weak charge density and the medium molecular weight (SC-020) showed the best performance in reducing the residual Al.
There is a need for a method that can effectively remove wastewater containing small-sized particles such as TiO2. In this study, we attempted to remove TiO2 wastewater using electrocoagulation-electroflotation two-step separation. The TiO2 wastewater was effectively removed via batch electrocoagulation-electroflotation separation. However, in the batch process, the simultaneous operation of electrocoagulation and electoflotation was challenging due to the high residual turbidity. In the continuous operation, electrocoagulation and electoflotation reactors were kept separate. The turbidity removal in continuous operation was similar to that in the batch process, nevertheless, the residual Al concentration was high, leading to the conclusion that counterterm ensures against residual Al were necessary.

A pilot scale biofilter pretreatment-microfiltration system (BF-MF) was operated to investigate the effect of biofilter treatment in fouling reduction of microfiltration. Biofiltration was expected to reduce the membrane fouling by removal of turbidity and metal oxides. The hollow-fiber MF module with a nominal pore size of 0.1$\mu$m and a surface area of 8m$^2$ was submerged in a filtration tank and microfiltration was operated at a constant flux of 0.5 m/d. Biofiltration using polypropylene pellets was performed at a high filtration velocity of 320 m/d. Two experimental setups composed of MF and BF/MF, i.e., without and with biofilter pretreatment, were compared. Throughout the experimental period of 9 months, biofilter pretreatment was effective to reduce the membrane fouling, which was proved by the result of time variations of trans-membrane pressure and backwash conditions. The turbidity removal rate by biofiltration varied between 40% to 80% due to the periodic washing for biofilter contactor and raw water turbidity. In addition to turbidity, metals, especially Mn, Fe and Al were removed effectively with average removal rates of 89.2%, 67.8% and 64.9%, respectively. Further analysis of foulants on the used membranes revealed that turbidity and metal removal by biofiltration was the major effect of biofiltration pretreatment against microfiltration fouling.
The present study is purposed to suggest accurate guidelines for developing standardized chicken meat stock containing salt, and to develop a product for mass production of uniform quality achieved by applying High Pressure Extraction Cooking(HPEC) using a high.pressure extractor. Through this study, we examined water contents, ash contents, salinity, turbidity and mineral contents of chicken meat stock according to the addition of salt. The ash contents increased with the increase of the addition of salt, but the water contents decreased with the increase of the addition of salt. Salinity increased with the increase of the addition of salt. Turbidity decreased with the increase of the addition of salt, and difference in turbidity according to the addition of salt was regular. Among mineral contents, Na showed the highest content, which was believed to be because of the addition of salt, and it was followed by K and P. The results of this study show that the mineral contents in the stock were different according to the addition of salt, but they were neither proportional to the addition of salt nor showed a regular pattern.
The concentration control of wood preservatives is necessary to produce a preservative treated wood having a uniform quality. Concentration measurement method of wood preservatives to be easily used in the field has not been developed yet. This study examined the way to estimate the concentration from turbidity of ACQ wood preservative that can be relatively easily measured by using a portable turbidity meter. The addition of phosphoric acid solution in an alkaline ACQ solution having a very low turbidity is created a suspension of the white substance and the turbidity suddenly increased. The optimum amount of addition of the phosphoric acid solution is until the pH of ACQ solution reaches 7, the turbidity of the ACQ solution reaches maximum value. Excessive addition of the phosphoric acid solution results in a turbidity decrease with acidification of the ACQ solution. Also ACQ solution becomes transparent. The high significance was recognized with positive correlation between the concentration and the turbidity of the ACQ solution. From the t-test, The significant difference between the actually measured concentrations and the concentrations predicted by the regression equation for industrial ACQ solutions was not recognized. Thus, it was possible to know that concentration prediction and control of industrial ACQ solution using the turbidity and a regression equation. Therefore, using the regression equation and turbidity is expected to be able to management the concentration of ACQ solution in the industrial field.
Daily monitoring was conducted to elucidate the changes in turbidity and distribution of particles in the turbid water of a river-type reservoir (Paltang Reservoir) from 1999 to 2001. Water turbidity and the particle distribution of turbid water were principally affected by meteorological factors particularly rainfall patterns and hydrological factors such as inflow and outflow. The mean concentration of turbidity was constant each year, with the concentration of less than 10 NTU accounting for 85%. Seasonal characteristics were remarkable, with winter and spring having < 5 NTU, autumn 5 ${\sim}$ 10 NTU, and summer > 20 NTU. Unlike hydrological changes, maximum turbidity was observed from late July to early August and continuously increased from 1999 to 2001. In particular, the maximum turbidity of reservoirs remarkably increased toward the lower part of reservoir in 2001. Discharge and turbidity increased or decreased slowly in 1999; in contrast, turbidity rapidly increased in the early rainfall period of 2000 and 2001 but later decreased as discharge increased. In the particles of turbid water, clay ingredients were more densely distributed and more dominant in all stations. Of the total particles in turbid water, clay constituted 63.9${\sim}$66.6% and silt 33.4${\sim}$36.1% to account for a combined total of 98.9 ${\sim}$ 100%. Sand made up less than 1.1%. The turbidity of river-type reservoir was also found to be mainly affected by the biomass of plankton in a non-rainfall period. During a rainfall period, however, the quantity and relative ratio of inorganic particles depending on the soil components affected turbidity.
DABF(Dissolve Air Flotation with Ball Filter) is developed as the DAF with the addition of a fiber ball at the lower part of the DAF. The DABF with a capacity of 4,500 ㎥/h was constructed at Gijang SWRO plant in Busan. Since the ball filter has high filtration rate, the loading rate of DABF was designed from 20 to 42 ㎥/h/㎡. When one DABF basin is in the back washing mode, the loading rate of other two DABF basins is increased to 42 ㎥/h/㎡. Turbidity at the BF outlet in DABF is <2 NTU at turbidity of 5-10 NTU at the BF inlet. If there is no algae bloom and turbidity is low in raw seawater, only BF in DABF is operated and meets <2 NTU at the BF outlet. Even if BF is operated at high hydraulic loading rates, no significant differential pressure increases and reduction in the turbidity removal rate is minimal in a day. Thus, DABF is the pre-treatment technology that provides stable water quality even with BF onlyoperation without DAF operation. Compared with the DAF, DABF requires additional facilities such as valves, piping, and drainage systems for backwashing the BF. But in terms of footprint and operating costs, DABF has more advantages than DAF. With DABF application, the load of the downstream filtration equipment is decreased so that the capacity of the filtration equipment can be reduced. Also, if the downstream filtration equipment is to be maintained the same regardless of DABF, the operating cost of DABF is less than DAF.
