  • Hypereutectic Al-Si alloys have been regarded attractive for automotive and aerospace application, due to high specific strength, good wear resistance, high thermal stability, low thermal expansion coefficient and good creep resistance. Spray casting of hypereutectic Al-Si alloy has been reported to provide distinct advantages over ingot metallurgy (IM) or rapid solidification/powder metallurgy (RS/PM) process in terms of microstructure refinement. In this study, hypereutectic Al-25Si-2.0Cu-1.0Mg alloy was prepared by OSPREY spray casting process. The change of strain rate sensitivity and Creep transition were analyzed by using the load relaxation test and constant creep test. High temperature deformation behavior of the hypereutectic Al-Si alloy has been investigated by applying the internal variable theory proposed by Chang et al. Especially, the creep resistance of spray casted hypereutectic Al-Si alloy can be enhanced considerably by the accumulation of prestrain.

  • Engineering ceramics have many unique characteristics both in mechanical and physical properties such as high temperature hardness, high thermal, chemical and electrical resistance. However, its machinability is very poor in conventional machining due to its high hardness and severe tool wear. In the current experimental study, alumina $(Al_2O_3)$ was ultrasonically machined using SiC abrasives under various machining conditions to investigate the material removal rate and surface quality of the machined samples. Under the applied amplitude of 0.02mm, 27kHz frequency, three slurry ratios of 1:1, 1:3 and 1:5 with different tool shapes and applied static pressure levels, the machining was conducted. Using the mesh number of 240 abrasive, slurry ratio of 1:1 and static pressure of $2.5kg/cm^2$, maximum material removal rate of $18.97mm^3/min$ was achieved. With mesh number of 600 SiC abrasives and static pressure of $3.0kg/cm^2$, best surface roughness of $0.76{\mu}m$ Ra was obtained.

  • This study presents the development of an integrated oil purification system consisting of moisture removal, oil flushing, and oil filtering devices. In this system, the oil flushing device is combined with a micro-bubble generator. Oil purification is necessary for ensuring the high performance of the lubricant through the efficient removal of contaminants and thus enables good maintenance of mechanical systems. The developed purification system removes moisture, varnish, and solid particles. Moreover, during oil purification, the oil flushing device separates foreign materials and contaminants remaining in the lubricating oil piping or mechanical systems. The microbubble generator, which is combined with the oil flushing device, can separate harmful contaminants, such as sludge, wear particles, and rust, from piping or lubrication systems through the cavitation effect. Moisture is removed using a double high-vacuum chamber, while sludge and varnish are removed via electro-absorption using a high-voltage generator. Additionally, the total maintenance cost of the system is reduced through the use of domestically fabricated cartridge filters composed of glass fiber and cellulose. The heater, which maintains the temperature of the lubricant at 60℃, can process 41,000 L of lubricant simultaneously. Multiple tests confirmed that the proposed integrated purification system exhibits good performance in oil flushing and removal of water and varnish.

  • TiCrN layers (Ti : Cr = 20 : 80 and 5 : 95 wt%) were deposited on Inconel 617 and the effect of TiCrN coating on the high temperature stability of Inconel 617 up to $1000^{\circ}C$ was examined. XRD analysis and microstructural observation showed that vigorous and inhomogenous Cr diffusion to the surface was suppressed by TiCrN layer compare to the uncoated Inconel 617. This led to a distinctive enhancement in thermal oxidation resistance of Inconel 617.

  • c-BN(cubic boron nitride) is known to have extremely high hardness next to diamond, as well as very high thermal and chemical stability. The c-BN in the form of film is useful for wear resistant coatings where the application of diamond film is restricted. However, there is less practical application because of difficult control of processing variables for synthesis of c-BN film as well as unclear mechanism on formation of c-BN. Therefore, in the present study, the structural characterization of c-BN thin film were investigated using $B_4C$ target in r.f. magnetron sputtering system as a function of processing variables. c-BN films were coated on Si(100) substrate using $B_4C$ (99.5% purity). The mixture of nitrogen and argon was used for carrier gas. The deposition processing conditions were changed with substrate bias voltage, substrate temperature and base pressure. Fourier transform infrared microscopy (FT-IR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were used to analyze crystal structures and chemical binding energy of the films. In the case of the BN film deposited at room temperature, c-BN was formed in the substrate bias voltage range of -400 V~ -600 V. Less c-BN fraction was observed as deposition temperature increased and more c-BN fraction was observed as base pressure increased.

  • The main objectives of this paper are to determine optimum cutting conditions using experimental design method to manufacture pedicle screws. Generally, titanium alloys are known as difficult-to cut materials. In the machining of titanium alloy, high cutting temperature and strong chemical affinity between the tool and the work material are generated because of Its low thermal conductivity and chemical reactivity. Such phenomenon cause increase of tool wear and deterioration of surface quality. Thus, in this paper, required experimental investigations are performed to evaluate the machinability of titanium materials With tungsten carbide tools Required simulation and experiments are performed, and the results are investigated.

  • Metalworking fluids (MWFs) are fluids used during machining and grinding to prolong the life of the tool, carry away debris, and protect the surfaces of work pieces. These fluids reduce friction between the cutting tool and the work surface, reduce wear and galling, protect surface characteristics, reduce surface adhesion or welding and carry away generated heat. Workers can be exposed to MWFs by inhaling aerosols (mists) and by skin contact with the fluid. Skin contact occurs by dipping the hands into the fluid, splashes, or handling workpieces coated with the fluids. The amount of mist generated (and the resulting level of exposure) depends on many factors. To reduce the environmental pollution wastes and the potential health risks associated with occupational exposures to MWFs, it is required to establish optimum MWFs supply method and condition with minimum quantity in all over the mechanical machining field including high-speed type heavy cutting process.

  • The Plasma Transferred Arc(PTA) overlay welding method is lately introduced as one of the most useful surface overlay method of the engine component. In this paper, the overlay welding method on the Nimonic super alloy was established by the PTA overlay welding process using the same super alloy powder. The characteristics of the Co-base and Ni-base super alloy overlay layers were investigated through the metallurgical, abrasive and cavitation erosion test. The abrasive and cavitation characteristics were investigated at room and high temperature.

  • The remote measurement system(RMS) as a new experimental method is limited in its application to crack measurements at elevated temperatures because of the oxide layer on the specimen surface. Since TiAlN and Cr coating layers have a high resistance to oxidation and wear, this paper proposed a TiAlN and Cr coating technique for specimens to facilitate the measurement of crack growth behavior using RMS. To investigate the effects of the coating layer, tension and fatigue tests were carried out at room temperature and at 538$^{\circ}C$, using specimens of 1Cr-1Mo-0.25V steel. From the experimental results, it was found that the mechanical properties of the TiAlN and Cr coated specimens were similar to those of the substrate. Accordingly, the TiAlN and Cr coated layer had hardly any influence on the fatigue crack propagation.
