  • M390 microclean(R) of $B{\ddot{o}}hler$ Edelstahl is a powder metallurgical plastic mould steel with a high level of corrosion and wear resistance and therefore often used in the plastics processing industry. But as a consequence of rapidly advancing developments in the plastics processing industry the required level of wear resistance of tool steels in this field is constantly rising. For that reason a new PM tool steel with higher hardness values and an increased amount of primary carbides has been developed to improve the resistance against abrasive and adhesive wear. The wear resistance of both steels against adhesive situations for components of the plastification unit of injection moulding machines has been tested with a novel method. In case of processing polyolefins with an injection moulding machine it was found that there is adhesive wear between the check-ring and the flights of the screw tip of the non-return valve under certain circumstances. The temperature in that region was measured with an infrared temperature sensor. The existence of significant peaks of that signal was used as an indicator for an adhesive wear situation.

  • In order to investigate tribological effects of nano copper particles impregnated(CuN) on surface polytetrafluoroethylene(PTFE) on sealing wear and an experimental study was carried out to determine the wear behavior of copper nano-particles impregnation two kind thickness in super critical $CO_2$ liquid. Experimental results showed that the friction coefficients of CuN PTFE at the low sliding speed(0.44m/s) and the oil temperature ($60^{\circ}C$) were higher than that of virgin PTFE. And a thin nano copper particles impreganated thickness was formed on the surface in the PTFE and the specimen with this treatment has much better friction properties than the original one. Fortunately, at the high load(80 N) and the oil temperature, the friction coefficient of CuN PTFE was lower than that of virgin PTFE. This evidenced the load carrying capacity of CuN PTFE was much better than that of virgin PTFE under the high load condition(80 N) specially. Therefore, it can be concluded that the friction coefficient variation of CuN PTFE is very small but its wear rate decreases greatly with increase in sliding speed.

  • This study is mainly concerned with the friction and wear properties for the specimens of crank shaft which are made of ductile cast iron. The friction and wear tests were carried out for the nor-malized ductile cast iron specimens and their properties were compared with each other at reheat-ing temperatures(550^{\circC,\; 600^{\circ}C,\; 650^{\circ}$) and in dry condition at different friction velocity(0.94 m/s 1.88m/s 2.83m/s) range. After austenized at $910^{\circ}C$ it is observed that the higher the reheating temperature is the hardness becomes decrease which is supposedly attributed to the fact that the amount of pearlite austenite matrix is rduced by reheating after normalizing and that as the reheating temperature goes up the pearlite generated is less and the interval between the pearlites were widened at last to make pearlite globular. At the low velocity the friction coefficient increase in the beginning and gets stabilized as the sliding distance increases. As the friction velocity grows the friction coefficient decreases suppos-edly since the abrasive wear is heavier at low velocity than at the high velocity as the friction tem-perature at low velocity is lower than at high velocity.

  • Tubes in nuclear steam generators are held up by supports because the tubes are long and slender. Fluid flows of high-pressure and high-temperature in the tubes cause oscillating motions between tubes and supports. This is called as FIV (flow induced vibration), which causes fretting wear in contact parts of tube-support. The fretting wear of tube-support can threaten the safety of nuclear power plant. The tube and support materials were Inconel 690 and STS 409. The wear tests were conducted in various environments, which are in water without flow, in flowing water and in flowing water with air. The results showed that the flow of water influenced on the wear-life of tube. The wear-life of tube decreased in water flow as compared with wear-life in stationary water.

  • The fracture and wear behavior of dental composite resins containing prepolymerized particle fillers were investigated. Composite resins such as Metafil, Silux Plus, Heliomolar and Palfique Estelite were selected as specimens and contents of filler in specimens in order to evaluate the effect of prepolymerized particle fillers in fracture and wear characteristics. Ball on flat wear tester was used for the wear test at room temperature. The friction coefficient of Metafil was quite high relatively, and the wear resistances of Silux Plus and Palfique Estelite were better than those of Metafil and Heliomolar at the same experimental condition. It was found that the main wear mechanism was abrasive wear containing of plastic deformation of dental material.

  • Enhancement of wear resistance of components used in fast reactors is necessary for long service life of the components. Plasma nitriding is a promising surface modification technology to impart high hardness and improved wear resistance of various steel components. This study discusses the characterization of chrome nitrided SS316L casing ring used in secondary sodium pump of fast breeder reactor and its stability under long term sodium exposure. Microstructural and hardness analysis showed that stress relieved component could be chrome nitrided successfully to a thickness of about 100 ㎛. Assessment of in-sodium performance of the chrome nitrided casing ring subjected to long term exposure up to 5000h at 550℃, showed retention of chrome nitrided layer with a case depth almost similar to that before sodium exposure. A slight decrease in the hardness was observed due to prolonged high temperature sodium exposure. Tribological studies indicate very low coefficient of friction indicating the retention of good wear resistance of the coating even after long term sodium exposure.

  • Surface layer properties such as composition, phase, hardness, and oxide layer condition are very important if the main failure mechanism of metals is wear. Generally, stable and dense oxide layers are known to decrease the wear rate of metals by prohibition of metallic junction occurred between bare metals. Addition of Si above 4 wt% to DCI(Ductile Cast Iron) is reported to enhance the significant oxidation resistance by forming the silicon-rich surface layer which inhibits further oxidation. And addition of up to 2 wt% Mo to high Si ductile iron produces significant increases in high temperature tensile strength, creep strength, thermal fatigue resistance and oxidation resistance. High pressure wear characteristics of unalloyed DCI(Ductile cast Iron), 4.46 wt% Si ductile iron, 4.3 wt% Si-0.52 wt% Mo ductile iron were investigated through unlubricated pin-on-disc wear test. Wear test was carried out at speed of 23m/min, under pressure of 3 MPa and 3.3 MPa. Wear surfaces of each specimen were observed by SEM to determine the wear mechanism under high pressure wear condition. Addition of Si 4.46 wt% severely deteriorated wear property of ductile iron compared to unalloyed DCI. But combined addition of Si 4.3 wt%andMo0.52wt%decreasedthefrictioncoefficient(${\mu}$)ofductileironsandremarkablydelayedthemild-severeweartransition.

  • When engine oil is used under severe running condition, the Lubricational characteristics is very important. I have studied the Lubricational characteristics with Compound Additives of engine oil for the Falex wear test machine. Adding detergent (Ca-phenate) to engine oil, the seizure is more improved than in case of non-adding, and adding Zn-DTP (Zinc dialkyl dithio phosphate), the extreme pressure property is excellent at the high load. But when the PTFE (Polytetra Fluoro Ethylene) and MoS$_{2}$ (Molybdenum disulfide) are added, the temperature characteristics and the anti-wear property become excellent because the stability can be maintained in a high temperature. The result are as follows, it can be improved that when the compound of the Ca-phenate and Zn-DTP, MoS$_{2}$, PTFE, etc. was added to engine oil, the lubrication characteristics become better. It is argued that it is improved because of excellence of the anti-wear, the extreame pressure properties and the heat stability.
